Surely they can’t keep schools open as normal if cases keep going up like today!

My daughter went back to school last Thursday. She really needed to go as lockdown played havoc with her mental health. She was fine doing her academic work but she is someone who needs the social side of school.

We are a vulnerable family and, with this shitshower of a government, I had no faith that cases wouldn’t rise and I wouldn’t be forced to take her out of school again. But I cannot believe that she has been back 2 days and the jump in cases has been so huge. I honestly expected us to be able to get to half term. Of course deaths are going to rise now. Why wouldn’t we follow the pattern of the other European countries. Add to that the fact that people can’t get tested now and we’re fucked. And I’m so fucking angry and upset about the damage that this is doing.

What are the government going to do? Surely it will be impossible to expect parents to keep sending their children to schools when the death toll is huge again and the ICUs are full.

Are schools obliged to let parents know if there’s a positive test result in your child’s class? Only someone my DS was sitting next to week before last has tested positive and has been off for 8 school days but we haven’t been informed by school. I asked my DS to double check and he says someone spoke to the child in question today who confirmed he tested positive. Of course he could be lying but my son was convinced. The parents might not have told the school of course but are they obliged to?

My son sat next to him every day till he went off sick.

Anyone know what the protocol should be?

No idea. Speaking as a teacher I'm teaching classes where kids are off I'll-no idea what's wrong with them. I'd like to know this too.

If we had decent track and trace everyone who has been in contact with the person should be alerted. If it involves a school aged child and parents don't have to disclose anything to the school, as for if track and trace alerts the school, who knows.

Nothing like this is needed obviously because we all know that schools are magical places where viruses don't exist.

427 schools impacted

Is that official data collected somewhere
BilberryBaggins · 09/09/2020 19:27

That should be the cue for the relevant child's bubble to be sent home I think.

Vinoonasunnyday · 09/09/2020 20:51

The child’s parents may have just kept him off for the week and not got him tested

Symptoms only need to isolate for 7 days don’t they? Or is it 10 now? Perhaps with stigma etc they decided to just isolate til better

That’s the problem with parents demanding to know the ins and outs

It’s none of your business unless school or nhs say ur a contact

On Facebook near me people are sharing details of cases in each school - not names but years etc. Disgusting

All it’ll do is put people off testing

Now big waits for tests many may just isolate for few days and go back in

CKBJ · 09/09/2020 20:59

I don’t think schools are obliged for one case I think it’s 2 or more that affects the bubble in the guidelines. However I know schools who have closed bubbles after one case or at least having a deep clean then children are back in.

If you have symptoms and or get a positive test you self isolate for 10days. Rest of your household isolates 14days. However isolation only ends after the 10days if you don’t have any symptoms (cough and loss of smell/taste may continue)

A friend of mine has just been tested due to having a high temp. Took 8 days for the result, and isolation is 10 days without a test. People won’t test if it continues to be such a massive cock up.
Vinoonasunnyday · 09/09/2020 21:15

No you don’t have to be symptom free after the 10 days

You just have to feel well as they admit coughs can linger for months

Vinoonasunnyday · 09/09/2020 21:18

Kaktus

I guarantee most people will just let kids stay off whilst unwell and send them back in once well - regardless of duration

No isolation of anyone else in family - covid wise

That’s how most people seem to think now

In real life I genuinely only know about 3 people who’ve had a test and they’re all doctors or nursing staff and have them routinely

Beebityboo · 09/09/2020 21:36

Chris Whitty said at the conference that the government's policy on schools might need to be "looked at again" if infections continue to rise. I genuinely can't see them staying open until half term at this rate.

ChanceChanceChance · 09/09/2020 21:38

Have just watched the conference. I thought they looked really worried.

I can't understand why they opened everything before schools, we should have pushed cases as far down as possible.

I'm miserable today!

I have never imagined schools would stay fully open until half term. The next few weeks will be chaotic, then we will go again with better guidance.
MitziK · 09/09/2020 21:44

They'll be able to keep schools open permanently (or until all the staff are off, at any rate).

The reason for this is that, although the schools information systems have been updated to allow you to record who has had a positive test, who is self isolating/awaiting a test and who is still shielding, the government has decided that they don't want useful information and everything is to be coded as Attendance not compulsory - which means that it isn't officially recorded as absences, never mind the reason why they are absent.

I'll expand on that - the way they have stated the information must be produced and notified, you could have 1,999 children off school actually with Covid-19, confirmed by a test, but none of them are required to be in school. If ONE child turns up for the day, the government stats will show, as a direct result of their requirements for data, that the school therefore has 100% attendance.

They'll keep them open 'as normal'. Because they've deliberately chosen to set the parameters for the data so that a single child attending whilst all others are off sick/isolating/shielding is effectively 'open as normal'. No evidence of schools being affected that way. Everything is fine, move along, nothing to see.

Beebityboo · 09/09/2020 21:49

They can't hide the outbreaks and closures from the parents or the media though and eventually there will be panic and parents will simply remove their children as they did in March. I'm hoping I'm wrong. Although I didn't want to send mine back the difference in the moods of my two youngest has been like night and day and they will be devastated if schools close again or if I remove them.

ProudMarys · 09/09/2020 21:58

I don't think they should close all schools like before but just take kids out who have symptoms get them teated /isolate classes with a case or two and last resort close school if it's got so many cases, for a certain period. We can just let all kids not go to school for months on end again. Perhaps maybe look into homeschooling if you can? I know some parents that have decided to do that. 1 has an grandparent living with them has a compromised immune system and the other just wanted to give homeschooling a go. We can't just shut all schools though, people aren't dropping like flies.

Vinoonasunnyday · 09/09/2020 22:43

Schools won’t close

No way

They may limit numbers as people go sick etc but defo won’t close

To be fair at the peak I don’t know of anyone in dds school who took their kids out

It’s been very relaxed throughout here

Surely the govt can't ignore this ?

My child started back today and I can't believe the amount of traffic and crowd. There was no social distancing and no one is wearing masks at drop off or pick up. I do appreciate some can't for medical reasons but it's worrying around school gates a lot of people gather at same time. We have been given slots but some have multiple kids in different year groups and have to obviously stick around to collect everyone unless they have a car and collected child can be left alone there.

Vinoonasunnyday · 09/09/2020 23:25

Any cases in England will have Ben transmitted prior to schools opening

Masks not needed outside and contact within 2m surely likely under the 15 min limit with any individual

Vinoonasunnyday · 09/09/2020 23:27

Kids will get it and almost all will have no or mild symtomns

This virus isn’t as bad as people make out

Be sensible but relax

Even people in their 80s with vastly serious underlying conditions have 80% chance of surviving! Be rational

noblegiraffe · 09/09/2020 23:27

Er what? In classrooms?

redferrari · 09/09/2020 23:30

How will we follow the new rule next week, parents will be gathered outside schools or kids will be walking home in groups. Will they all be policed?
