I live in a area with a low-ish infection rate, but two local schools announced today they are closing year groups for the next two weeks due to staff testing positive.

Is this happening nationally?

OP posts:

Yes partially closed a full year group plus everyone from the after school club to isolate for 14 days. This amounts to 120 children.

When I went to sleep last night it was 6 partial closures in my county.

This morning we are up to 9.

Juanmorebeer · 08/09/2020 09:31

Only one out of those 9 is staff cases the rest are child positive cases.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/09/2020 09:36

Local school has shut Yr7. For one case after 1 day.

I have a feeling that whole year shutdowns will be short lived and schools will instead only send home children who have been in close contact.

canigooutyet · 08/09/2020 09:38

Over 60 schools already have outbreaks, at least one teacher is already in hospital.
This is all down to the clowns in power.

Yes schools need to open and the kids need education. What they are facing is nothing but disruptions. Thousands are already on 10 day isolation. Not all schools have the ability to support home learning, and if the class teacher is also off sick who is going to do the live lessons? Not all families have the funds for home learning hence the laptop scheme. Even that is a farce and no doubt even though schools are still waiting, it will be withdrawn.

Ds secondary school had a positive case after the first day back! Whole form plus 2 teachers were sent home yesterday to isolate for 14 days!

Notfeelinggreattoday · 08/09/2020 09:51

My ds only gone back today , eldest back to college yesterday not expecting go get to october without something happening school wise

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/09/2020 09:51

Our local secondary sent out email yesterday that year 11 were to stay at home as a pupil had tested positive

Notfeelinggreattoday · 08/09/2020 09:56

@LynetteScavo i cannot see how they intend exams to go ahead either as some could be off numerous times
My yr 11 son gets a cough every year so that will be a few days pff whilst we await a test , let alone if anyone gets it and they have to isolate or teacher numbers are high in cases . Surely now they are back they should be asking schools to do little tests , work that could be provided to use for teacher assessments etc . I think expecting them to sit them still but possibly delaying by 3 weeks ( which is of no benefit ) is unrealistic and they should be planning now for teacher assesments but maybe coursework style so that there is evidence if needed etc

But that will be awful for individual learners, who will have massive gaps in their education, especially subjects which you have to understand the basics to progress.

I’m a teacher currently being forced to self isolate. I completely hear all the frustrations on the posts above.

I’m bloody fed up and I just want to be in school. A student I taught on the first day back was sent in unwell, then tested and had Covid. We’ve now got a year group off and all his teachers for that day.

The situation seems endless. I don’t know how we are going to get out of this as it’s just going to get worse.

MarshaBradyo · 08/09/2020 10:00

If your school / year has shut is the school implementing something else to do from home? Or is it see you in two weeks

Notfeelinggreattoday · 08/09/2020 10:03

Trouble is what is the solution the kids need to go back we don't have extra empty buildings and hundreds of spare teachers to have more social distancing , we are a densely populated country
Home learning doesn't work for all as not all kids have access to pc , internet etc and even if all were provided you can have parents who just won't bother and also kids sharing rooms so no quiet place to work etc
It seems most around here have sent their kids back from reading on here i thought that a few would home school and that would reduce class sizes but it doesn't seem to be the case
I really don't know what the solution is long term

EvilPea · 08/09/2020 10:07

One year sent home at secondary. So far primary all ok

EducatingArti · 08/09/2020 10:11

Over a thousand students sent home in Greater Manchester so far.

Willyoujustbequiet · 08/09/2020 10:46

Yep 2 near me in the north east. Only back 2 days now isolation for 14.

DumDaDumDum · 08/09/2020 11:30

@MarshaBradyo I’m live teaching direct to my classroom but obviously I’m planning twice - once for the lesson to the classroom, once for the kids isolated.

Never mind. I can’t leave my house so something to do!

Impressive!! So do you have a portion of the class in, do you teach the full day then start when they leave?

ScottishDream · 08/09/2020 12:03

One teacher that I know of I’m my school self isolating with symptoms awaiting a test. There will probably be more.

This is what will fuck up individual learners education, the feckless who send in their ill kids.
HelloMissus · 08/09/2020 15:06

All ok for our foster kids so far.
But older child’s friend started a new job in a boarding school and they’ve all to be tested.

My sons school will be sending home learning packs, gcse level, and not all subjects will be available at home. A lot will also depend on if it's the teacher sick as obviously they wont be around for support.

I've asked them what exam board they are using and what will be studied over the term so I can try and ensure there won't be a gap. His hoy is organising this, and asked me to put it in email cc'ing the head and local mp so it's getting their attention of the shit show.

I sound like one of those parents lol, I'm not. Planned meeting with hoy to discuss sons ongoing issues.

It's not the schools fault, it's the government. It wasn't long ago that education had another massive cut and jobs were lost and without funding, schools are in an awful predicament. If they have to close, the budget will be gone because of printing. If they carry on with sporadic bubble shut downs the budget will be gone quicker.

Only reason many of them have money left is because they were closed to the majority so less resources had to be bought. Once the money runs out, closures will become more frequent. On a normal year before the year has finished hand soap runs out because of no money, and as generous as many in education are, I cannot see them funding this for their entire class especially in secondary.

Jj2431 · 08/09/2020 16:01

Yes 2 cases in our school so school shut until further notice. Back less than a week. Fml

Juanmorebeer · 08/09/2020 16:33

Now gone from 9 to 13 schools partially closed now

Juanmorebeer · 08/09/2020 18:35

Make that 15

DumDaDumDum · 08/09/2020 18:53

@MarshaBradyo it’s just a joke. Basically I’ve started with the older year groups - made them a learning pack based on lesson content and then obviously I’m teaching too.

Luckily during lockdown I got a lot of planning done but my goodness, I’ve just sat down after doing 7-6.30 sat at my laptop with tiny breaks (to go on MN and make tea obviously!)

It’s bloody lonely too..

School said we are not allowed back in even if we have a negative test. I’m clearly fine but it’s so frustrating. Feel so sorry for the kids.
