I’ve obviously no imagination but are people still furloughed? If so, what type of jobs do they do? Traffic is still light near me so I think lots are wfh if they can but just trying to work out of people are still off and furloughed

OP posts:
Emeeno1 · 04/09/2020 18:14

Croupiers.

OneEpisode · 04/09/2020 18:15

I work in a huge head office type building. Only 10% back. Most WFH all week still. That’s till end October, they may announce return then (or redundancies) or extend WFH.
WFH was a common staff benefit before Covid, but with manager agreement, usually one day/week or thereabouts...

Vinoonasunnyday · 04/09/2020 18:18

It’s almost all industries as not all operating full capacity

My gym has only brought back 3 out of 18 staff as numbers too low

They are being made redundant at end furlough

Namechangr9000 · 04/09/2020 18:20

My friend works in retail. The shop is open and busy but only 40% of staff are back.

Cakestandkitchen · 04/09/2020 18:20

I’m i Scotland and part time working, part time furloughed. I work in admin in the accountancy sector.

Myshitisreal · 04/09/2020 18:24

👋 Concert/conference hall/venues 😭

hastingsmua1 · 04/09/2020 18:26

Even sectors that are open still have furloughed staff. Eg I went into the home department at a large M&S which was an absolute ghost town, I had to ask someone all the way in the food hall to assist me! He was saying how his colleagues were still furloughed etc and the business isn’t making that much money

FreezerBird · 04/09/2020 18:34

DH is in healthcare - think high street stuff, pharmacy, dentist, optician, physio etc - and he's still furloughed. Colleagues are gradually going back but he's still home (we suspect various reasons for this but don't actually know).

The premises is really small and there's no way they could operate with the pre-covid numbers of staff and patients and keep the practice covid-safe. He's not expecting to go back to full hours when he does go, and we're not sure if being last to go back makes him first on the redundancy list if they get to that point.

Heyahun · 04/09/2020 18:35

I’m working part time hours at the moment and furloughed for the rest (nursery) we aren’t back to full hours or capacity just yet

TwoCupsOfLemonTea · 04/09/2020 18:41

DH works for in the car parking department of an airport, back with a boom but as air corridors get closed then more and more staff are being re-furloughed. Hoping that the forecast projection of high travel numbers for next year may protect his job somehow.

Lindy2 · 04/09/2020 18:45

My brother works for a company that deals in self service coffee vending machines.

He's still furloughed as most places with the machines haven't turned them on again yet as everyone has to touch the same buttons. They'd be fine if people sanitised their hands before using them.

Witchend · 04/09/2020 18:57

Mine is partially. Events industry.

hm246 · 04/09/2020 19:11

I work in a hotel. Our main financial gain is weddings, events and meetings. We have lots still on furlough, most of office team who plan and arrange the bookings, some of the accounts team and the waiting on/kitchen staff who would work the event are currently furloughed.

Even if the 30 person limit is removed I can’t see many big events being booked anytime soon. I also think small meetings won’t be back, companies aren’t going to rent a space when using zoom has worked well the last 6 months.

Sadly, once the scheme finishes I can see many not returning Sad

mummyh2016 · 04/09/2020 19:12

I'm still furloughed, I arrange clients removals overseas. Business has dropped significantly but I am confident I will be back to work when furlough finishes.

MondeoFan · 04/09/2020 19:15

I'm still on furlough and work in education. Reason is partly due to childcare issues but now my DC are back at school the problem seems to be that they are just having less staff in to reduce the spread. Hope to be back to work next month though

Namechangr9000 · 04/09/2020 19:20

DH works in events and there's still almost nothing happening there as you can imagine.
It's making me very angry that Johnson/Sunak are refusing to extend furlough claiming it's time to go back to work, when certain sectors realistically cannot.

I was thinking this. One of my family works in a theatre and they wont be opening until January at the earliest....but what happens after october.....?also what about local lockdowns......will shops/businesses instructed to close in certain towns be eligible for help...?

Evilwasps · 04/09/2020 19:31

Many, many airport workers are still on furlough. They are the lucky ones for now so many have already been made redundant

foxessocks · 04/09/2020 19:36

Family member who works in a car showroom, she is still furloughed,, they only need two staff members because it's just so quiet. I have a feeling redundancy will be next.

rosesinmygarden · 04/09/2020 19:56

I know several families whose nannies are still furloughed because the parents are working from home on full pay.

Both the mothers have told me how much money they're saving in not having to pay their nannies. The poor nannies will be on 70% pay, funded by the government. I can't help but think this is not what the scheme was intended for.

Vinoonasunnyday · 04/09/2020 19:58

That’s the problem

It’s not about things being open

It’s about the footfall

In next couple of years companies will wat to recoup their losses and pay off loans they’ve borrowed to get them thru this

I estimate half people I know are expecting redundancy

AlohaMolly · 04/09/2020 20:04

I feel a bit guilty saying this, but I’m working and furloughed. I work in tourism and my contracted hours are different to what my average hours were pre lockdown. I was brought back to work end of June and, directly due to Covid, work less than both my contracted and my average hours, but am being paid up to my average hours through the part time furlough scheme.

My contracted hours are 18/week but I did the social media from home and never did less than 22 hours in reality. Since being back, I haven’t been doing the social media through fear of negativity from our local community.

Once this ends in October, I can’t afford to live on my contracted hours, those extra 4+ hours a week are my grocery budget, so I’m not too sure what I’ll do then.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 04/09/2020 20:16

The people I know still on furlough work in aviation, childcare and leisure centres.

@OneEpisode But WFH isn’t being in furlough?
OneEpisode · 04/09/2020 21:23

Hi Lesley I read the OP, and although the title said furlough I thought the OP also wanted to know why traffic was light, so I added a post about WFH. Hope that’s not against the rules of the thread!

Smileyoriley · 04/09/2020 21:26

I am, charity sector. Some are beginning to head back to work but I suspect redundancies are round the corner.
Charity sector here too. I agree, big job cuts to come.
