Two days back at school and already needing to quarantine..

A local school to me, a child has tested positive after two days back which means the whole class has to quarantine for two weeks.

But a local restaurant a member of staff tested positive and the staff were tested the next day and all negative so reopened straight away.

How does that work?

Local restaurant should surely not have opened as staff are in incubation period so wouldn't test positive even if they've caught it

Frlrlrubert · 02/09/2020 19:43

Staff are adults and assumed to have been wearing PPE and/or socially distancing in a COVID secure workplace.

Children are in a bubble with each other where they are not socially distancing and not wearing PPE.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/09/2020 20:07

Oh no. And it starts. Sad

lifesalongsong · 02/09/2020 20:12

Do you have a link to the story?

Did the chIld have symptoms, did the parents ignore them? To have a positive test less than 48 hours after the school opened suggests some kind of back story.

historyrocks · 02/09/2020 20:14

There was a positive test at my daughter’s secondary school a few weeks ago (we’re in Scotland). Only a few children were told to quarantine and there’s been no further infections.

greengreengrass14 · 02/09/2020 20:20

Might be my general attitude to life, erring on the side of caution, looking at worst case scenario so that I can be pleasantly surprised if things turn out better than that but

we are due back tomorrow, I'm kind of prepared for stopping school again from way day to the next...it still kind of seems like an improvement from having to full time home school which we've been doing since March....

but then I realise others have other challenges...and I am totally with all those with worries...I've worried so much since March I've kind of run out of steam with it, was tearful today about tomorrow

CallmeAngelina · 02/09/2020 20:23

That you know about.

MarshaBradyo · 02/09/2020 20:23

Only one child and quarantine? I thought it had to be more positivity cases

MarshaBradyo · 02/09/2020 20:23

Positive

StatisticalSense · 02/09/2020 20:25

@hedgehogger1
A well run restaurant is likely to have planned things to have 2 sets of staff who don't work on the same shifts (and may well still have people on furlough who could be brought back) to protect themselves from having to close after a singular positive test.

Guidelines changed just before the bank holiday. Schools were mightily pissed off.
StatisticalSense · 02/09/2020 20:29

And even within a shift it is unlikely that multiple FOH staff will be in close contact. Even in normal times a lot of restaurants operate so each server has their own area and would only come within 2 meters of other staff in the kitchen or at the POS and it shouldn't be that difficult to stop such contact. A positive test in the back of house team is likely to take more staff into self isolation but even then unless the restaurant only has one chef it would usually be possible to stay open with one kitchen team down.

That's for quarantining the whole bubble, presumably a secondary bubble. Close contacts of the case still get quarantined.

In a primary with the class as the whole bubble and no SD, then it's not surprising it's the whole class.

monkeytennis97 · 02/09/2020 20:37

Wow in two days? As a secondary teacher I thought we might get the first week done before it all starts (and I'm usually quite pessimistic).

MarshaBradyo · 02/09/2020 20:37

Just read guidance. It’s close contacts for one case as defined in document. So could be a few or all.

MarshaBradyo · 02/09/2020 20:41

Do quarantined get tested? It would be useful to see how many get it as a close contact.

Iirc Israel had a big outbreak but unusually had low transmission between close contacts.

stovetopespresso · 02/09/2020 20:42

yup sounds about right. we have to prepare for this possibility, its bad luck it happened so soon in to tje term though

stovetopespresso · 02/09/2020 20:43

@MarshaBradyo you only get tested if symptomatic

stovetopespresso · 02/09/2020 20:45

I think...oh god I'm confused again 😕

MarshaBradyo · 02/09/2020 20:46

Oh right thanks. Seems a shame not to get that data.

historyrocks · 02/09/2020 20:46

Yes, entire primary school classes have been asked to quarantine, but not entire secondary school class.

The following link is a week old, but it shows situation a month into the new term here www.heraldscotland.com/news/18659877.coronavirus-scotlands-schools-pupils-tested-positive-safe/

stovetopespresso · 02/09/2020 20:47

though my neice developed a cough last week and my sis had to drive her to the testing place (surreal disused army base) and she was also tested....

Ulelia · 02/09/2020 20:48

I live in the EU. A local private school started on Monday, had three positive cases across primary today so is now closed for two weeks. We open on Monday, anyone's guess if we make it even a day or two!

historyrocks · 02/09/2020 20:48

Not a month! Blush Two weeks into term. I’m tired....

stovetopespresso · 02/09/2020 20:53

yes I think we've got to brace ourselves for a rocky road, if your kid gets a cough or a fever its test time with all the repercussions of a day of work even if negative. does the class have to disperse while they await results?
