Something I can't work out......

I had this discussion with DH today and we're still puzzled, so any opinions/insight.

At the peak of the virus there was around 5/6000 new cases per day day and in the high hundreds of deaths per day. Now there's around 1000 cases per day but only around 10 deaths. What has changed?

Obviously it's a good thing less people are dying but why is the number now so much lower per 1000 cases than it was?

DH said the new cases are younger people who are then recovering but surely younger people were more at risk of catching it at the peak given they'd be out & about more & coming into contact with more people than the elderly generation.

I just don't understand why the number of deaths is a much lower ratio to the number of new cases than it was previously.

@Thanksitsgotpockets That little snippet you've posted doesn't say anything about what the false positive rate actually is. It simply says it's important to know what the false positive rate is.

Indeed. It came from here.

As PP have said. At the peak you ONLY recieved a test iff you were admitted to hospital with corona like symptoms. So if you were seriously ill. You now basically get tested if you have a dicky tummy. I know someone with IBS whose been sent to testing 3 times. My dad is tested weekly due to his job. They're picking up people with mild symptoms, middling symptoms and the asymptomatic now as well as those in hospital

Ah thank you all.... now it all becomes clear. I probably sounded quite docile but I really didn't get it 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's best to ask to understand.

It much better than what hear of people who honestly believe back in March we only had 5000 cases a day and 1000 of them died - and therefore now it must have become much weaker.

That thought process causes danger.

Right now we are very aware of more than 50% of cases.

We are managing retractions and lockdowns well enough.

If people think it can no longer kill they will ignore quarantines etc and risk exponential growth again.
