Wear a face mask at school drop off?

Will you wear a face mask to drop off or pick up the kids on the school run? It’s going to be chaotic enough in the playground especially with rubbish weather.

Were I live people wearing masks in places they should is pretty high.
I hardly see anyone without a mask on in these areas.
Same with the use of hand sanitiser in shops, most people will use it if there is any to use.

SylvanianFrenemies · 29/08/2020 12:29

I wear a mask, I would say about a third of parents do. It is not possible to be 2m away from everyone at drop off and pick-up at our school, and I am clinically very high risk. My child can recognise me in a mask so no chaos resulting.

“ Human rights are to some Brits apparently more important than possibly live and death even though the only ask is to simply repurpose a piece of clothing and cover ones mouth and nose occasionally and temporarily as a respectable acknowledgement of the presence of someone outside your household bubble in spitting distance.”

This makes absolutely zero sense

I don’t understand why not wearing a mask when it isn’t mandated is some kind of heinous crime to some people

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 29/08/2020 12:41

Just to clarify that on average most Brits do wear face coverings normally shop brought reusable multilayered cloth face masks or standard surgical face masks. However still guessing around a quarter maximum but averaging at least ten per cent (on a daily basis) or so are unmasked in settings which are obligatory. Presumably there are those who are medically exempt which is perfectly understandable but those that I have seen mostly unmasked then to be from a certain demographic. That demographic is factually from my sightings tend to be young adult males who don't otherwise appear disabled or with an (visible or non visible) mental illness. I may be wrong as for my own and masked up child's safety I rather avoid like the plague. But why would a group of lads (sometimes ironically in hooded outerwear) in the shops all suddenly felt the need to be diagnosed with medical exemptions. Just saying as we all know who are the main likely demographic of asymptomatic super spreaders are globally.

BunsyGirl · 29/08/2020 12:56

Yes because it was a requirement imposed by my DC’s school back in June. Likewise, they have to wear masks in and out of school and when walking around the campus.

MJMG2015 · 29/08/2020 13:15

@Vinoonasunnyday

Totally agree blue skies

Bad enough the government let us down but now it seems parents are actively giving up on their kids rights

And which rights would those be?
MJMG2015 · 29/08/2020 13:19

@blueskies20

*haha, i'm catastrophising? and what do you call the over reaction of lockdown and closure of schools and shut down of all businesses and closure of children's playgrounds, and cancellation of operations and 2 million people waiting endlessly for cancer treatment and older people in care homes being euthanised - I think that was catastrophising personally.

Take your masks off people and stand up for your children's rights, we are complying with tyranny.*

I think you're getting a bit carried away!
or should be

I'm glad you're not in charge! Your take on things would have seen hundreds of thousands dying.

Redwinestillfine · 29/08/2020 13:21

We have all been asked to wear face masks by school. I'm pleased because it's a big school and would be a nightmare otherwise.

@deeptreacle

Your comprehension levels are not that posters problem.

You were rude and incorrect. It made perfect sense! But even if it hadn't, would it have hurt you to ask nicely for an explanation IF you were actually interested in their point and not just showing them up?

Not everyone on MN has English as their first language or had a good education, belittling people might make you feel superior, but it just makes you look like a rude twat.

Anyway, it made sense.

I don’t understand why not wearing a mask when it isn’t mandated is some kind of heinous crime to some people
Because our Govt is making a complete mess of it. People can make the sensible decision to wear a mask over & above what's mandated because it makes sense!

It's not mandated that I put my socks on before my shoes, but common sense tells me it's a good idea, so that's what I do.

Lots of the guidelines aren't mandated because they're (stupidly) trusting the general public to have a bit of sense As it becomes apparent many don't have the sense they were born with, more & more becomes mandated.

Kaktus · 29/08/2020 13:34

Common sense tells me that as I can manage to stay 2m away from other parents on the outdoor school run, I don’t need to wear a mask.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 29/08/2020 13:43

Common sense tells me that in a hundred years people will be pissing themselves laughing at us tying a bit of t-shirt round our faces to stop a microscopic virus from spreading. But hey ho.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 29/08/2020 13:47

Those advocating wearing masks for the safety of those around them....I do hope you're not the same parents I see parking on blind bends, double parking, parking across other's driveways and all the countless other ways you seem to be determined to risk your child's life by doing? I would suggest for some people, others not wearing masks are the least of your worries.

DeepTreacle · 29/08/2020 13:52

MJMG2015 It wasn’t the English language that didn’t make sense. But you assume away.

unmarkedbythat · 29/08/2020 14:37

Common sense should tell you it's not your actions but those of others which may make this impossible. You cannot predict or control other's behaviour or every situation.

Well experience, rather than common sense, tells me that in the past week that my children have been back at school, all of the other parents have managed to stay 2m apart from me (and others) too.
Kaktus · 29/08/2020 14:48

And as my mask protects others rather than myself, if they feel the need to get too close to me then that’s their lookout, isn’t it 🤷🏻‍♀️

yawnsvillex · 29/08/2020 15:08

YES! @Kaktus I agree Grin

This 😄
Uhoh2020 · 29/08/2020 15:11

@Kaktus I think that's possibly the best response I've seen in ages Grin

Popcornriver · 29/08/2020 15:22

No why bother. If any parents have it their child likely does as well so it's only a matter of time that my child gets it from theirs Confused

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 29/08/2020 15:34

We've been back at school (primary) since Wednesday. It is NOT possible to stay 2m apart. They are 700 kids in our primary, no staggered starts so at 8.50am and 3pm about 400 adults descend on the school and start gathering at doors, 30 adults per classroom door (60 or 90 where there is only 1 external door for several classes) and assorted infants and toddlers. Kids get sent out 1 by 1 and everyone shifts forward or back in the crowd to get their kid and then makes their way through the single set of school gates.

School have asked us all (over 11yo) to wear masks when on school grounds so we do.

GlomOfNit · 29/08/2020 23:26

Non-issue, surely? Who wouldn't wear a face covering for a very few minutes whilst being closer to other people than 1.5 m, so they could pick up their kids and comply with school guidance that works to try and keep that school open for longer, safely? Hmm

I wear one in crowded street situations. I wear one whilst queuing for the open-air market stall in our small town. I put one on when I get within a couple of people of the head of the supermarket entrance queue. I don't feel like my rights are being infringed in any way and think some people need to get a fucking grip.
