Wear a face mask at school drop off?

Will you wear a face mask to drop off or pick up the kids on the school run? It’s going to be chaotic enough in the playground especially with rubbish weather.

Not unless the school ask us to.

(Wait now for posts from people in countries where masks are mandated outdoors at all times for all people aged 2yo upwards, about how they all Just Get On With It and wear masks with joy in their hearts)

Haha I love this. So true. It's not enough to wear the bloody things where they're enforced, we are meant to enjoy it as well 🙄

AlwaysLatte · 28/08/2020 10:56

I'll be keeping my distance from other mums so no but I'll have one with me in case.

StrangeAddiction · 28/08/2020 11:00

I will be because I will expect someone coughing either through, a smokers cough/cold/Covid/tickle throat etc and any of those could be carriers and I'd rather not walk through the aerosol particles of Covid that can hang in the air for hours, ok it's outside and the wind blows etc but I'd rather it didn't blow in my direction while I have to walk up the long drive from the school gates to the buildings. Also I anticipate people walking faster than me so overtaking me after drop off on the one way system so there'll be close contact. I'll not be wearing glasses to protect my eyes from any particles though.

Our schools have been back for a couple of weeks.

I do take a mask with me, because the school's arrangements for pickup and drop-off has meant that everyone is crowded round the same few entrances and it's a lot more crowded than pre-Covid.

It's getting a bit better now that the school (and the parents) are adapting. The last few pickups it's been perfectly possible to space out from each other. But it was a chaotic crowded mess to start with.

U8myufo · 28/08/2020 11:12

I'm going to wear a bucket on my head and have done with it

LouiseNW · 28/08/2020 11:25

U8myufo

Did you stand in the last GE?

chandellina · 28/08/2020 11:49

I will definitely have one with me and imagine I'll put it on because even with staggered drop off times it will be very crowded and even if the risk is low outside, it's a lot of people and potential aerosol in a small area.

unmarkedbythat · 28/08/2020 11:57

I won't be doing the drop offs or pick ups. If school want parents to wear masks, DH will wear one. We haven't had any information yet about how drop offs and pick ups will work- the last letter we had said "please see separate information regarding drop off and pick up arrangements" but the information itself hasn't come out yet.

Why would you?

To minimise the spread of the virus, I assume.

It’s not a rule so why make new ones up?

To maximise safety. Do you only do things that are specified in rules? What exactly do you mean by 'not a rule' anyway? That the government haven't specified it?

Kaktus · 28/08/2020 11:58

No. It is outdoors, we have staggered drop offs and pick ups and all the parents at our school are managing to keep their distance from others (our school has already gone back) so I don’t see any need.

BikeTyson · 28/08/2020 11:59

Not outdoors I wouldn’t.

Uhoh2020 · 28/08/2020 12:13

To maximise safety. Do you only do things that are specified in the rules? What do you mean "not a rule"anyway?

Do you also walk round wearing a hard hat a hi vis jacket and steel toe cap boots to maximise safety too or would that be taking it to the extreme ?Do you wrap your children in bubble wrap to maximise safety in case they fall over Or is it only covid safety that matters ?
You can go on and on with safety measures for everything but then perspective and a bit of rational thinking needs to be applied .

blueskies20 · 28/08/2020 12:15

No I won't be wearing a mask.

poshme · 28/08/2020 12:21

No.

It's outside.

frozendaisy · 28/08/2020 12:33

Yes if only to normalise it for the kids and who knows it might prevent someone catching Covid-19 from me if I catch it from one of my kids.

If putting a mask on helps to reduce community transmission and contributes to schools being open for longer it's the lesser of two evils.

DeepTreacle · 28/08/2020 13:51

“ the school's arrangements for pickup and drop-off has meant that everyone is crowded round the same few entrances and it's a lot more crowded than pre-Covid”

What a ridiculous state of affairs

SistemaAddict · 28/08/2020 14:22

Yes. Ecv and one narrow entrance to school. I don't care what people think.

Dementedswan · 28/08/2020 15:57

Yes, school have said it's a requirement to wear masks at drop off and pick up. Its appointment only to speak to teacher and classes have staggered start and finish times.

rosie39forever · 28/08/2020 16:49

My dds school started back this week, we have to queue socially distanced to drop off , all of the staff are wearing face coverings and I think it's the polite thing to do for parents and carers to do the same so most of us are, it's only for a few minutes so no big deal, if wearing a mask for a few minutes helps the school to stay open and Covid free then I have no problem with it.

user1470659997 · 28/08/2020 21:13

Similar situation to some others. Drop off and pick up is not being staggered. There will be a one way system in place but the playgrounds are small and it’s a double entry school so you can imagine the crowds. The road outside is narrow anyway and no chance for social distancing.

Ks1 playground is on the other side of school to Ks2, so you will have to drop one off then walk back around the school to drop the other child.

Sedona123 · 28/08/2020 21:41

Yes, I will do. As with a couple of PP, my DCs school are having staggered drop offs, but have also asked parents to wear masks. DC (primary age) are also going to be asked to wear masks at times, and the teachers are going to wear visors. We all need to do all we can, however small, to minimise the spread of the virus.

Time2change2 · 28/08/2020 21:53

Jesus Christ. I tell you what, even when this whole pandemic has gone away, I will never think of other people the same way again. It’s outside ffs. Just keep back from others! And the comment ‘I’m wearing a mask to normalise it for my DC’ well I’m just at a loss for words

BogRollBOGOF · 28/08/2020 21:56

Of course not. It's outside. I'm out of breath from a brisk walk to school. I'm not going to gag and hyperventilate on my own recycled breath in order to look holier than thou (as happened on my last attempt at the week's shopping)

A face covering obscures my peripheral vision making it more likely that I bump into something low level like a small child- not great for social distancing.

Why are people constantly striving to set new levels of unnecessary, unhelpful rules for the sake of it???

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 28/08/2020 22:00

I think I will.

Our school is not allowing parents on the huge yard and expects us to wait outside, on a narrow pavement while maintaining 2 metres distance. Even with staggered drop offs and pick ups this is impossible - there is no physical room outside the school. So the new rules are creating crowding and close contact that didn't exist before.

Lucked · 28/08/2020 22:06

No I haven’t been. There is quite a long drop off period of 20mins so not overly busy. Also they are now using 4 gates for pick up with one class leaving at a time and people are being respectful of social distancing.

blueskies20 · 28/08/2020 22:31

How many of you are avoiding cigarettes and alcohol and are eating your 5 a day and keeping active and taking your vitamins to stay healthy....probably not many of you and you expect a mask to perform miracles...well done contributing to our children's psychological damage, can't anyone see through this worldwide scam? Do you know that the Coronavirus Act has given the authorities the right to take a "potentially infected" child away from school or your home without your say so? There's a protest in Trafalgar Square, London tomorrow at 12pm if anyone wants to defend their kid's human rights.
