Will Trick or treating go ahead this year ?

Just thinking ahead, do you think trick or treating will be banned this Halloween due to COVID-19? It is an outdoor activity, but knocking on doors and grabbing sweets from a bowl... hmmm.

OP posts:
Littlebelina · 28/08/2020 07:35

I've lived in 3 different regions of the country and trick and treating has taken place in all of them so also wondering where these trick and tricking blackspots are.

I'll get sweets in and do a pumpkin. We don't tend to get many down our street but love doing it.

LemonGraber · 28/08/2020 07:41

We're not going out this year. Me and the dc are going to decorate our house inside and do some Halloween themed activities/games.

I did see some halloween dog toys in a shop though .

seayork2020 · 28/08/2020 07:43

I will admit to putting up a 'we have run out sign' when we get home from work

LST · 28/08/2020 07:46

I hope not. I hate Halloween.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 28/08/2020 07:54

It's a good opportunity for me to have a clear out and get rid of all the old Halloween tat that's been hanging around in drawers from previous years. We won't be doing it this year. I'm sure the DC will be disappointed but will get over it Grin

kittensarecute · 28/08/2020 08:04

Yes. This year's taken away enough pleasure.

DominaShantotto · 28/08/2020 08:10

Local streets are a huge hotspot for it here, and I imagine it’ll be the same as normal. I’ll get some small bag multipacks of haribo in so everything is shrink wrapped and plan to proceed as normal with only visiting houses decorated and obviously participating.
The kids have lost enough this year.

I’m doubting the guy who does a huge special effects house for charity probably won’t do it as a going in the graveyard for a donation thing though - he normally raises nearly a grand

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/08/2020 08:15

The glee which some posters here are expressing about yet another bit of normality and joy being taken away from children is fucking disgusting. Don't like Halloween, don't do it. But let's not pretend that there's a massive risk from kids pressing your doorbell (just put a fucking bowl out you numpty) or picking up a packet of sweets when you can touch packets on a supermarket shelf all you like, and you can go to a pub / restaurant / cafe / shopping centre / bookshop / garden centre / insert choice of activity yourself.

Children are not disease ridden pests to be locked away out of sight. Their lives have been completely trashed this year and you're merrily taking away an outdoor, low risk activity from them for your own selfish reasons.

baubled · 28/08/2020 08:27

I'm so glad I'm not a misery guts who hates anything that isn't a normal regular day.

Fingers crossed for Halloween, I think it will go ahead round here, we're in local lockdown and there's a grand total of about 3 people sticking to it so I imagine trick or treating will still happen with adults putting sweets in bags instead of the kids picking.

LST · 28/08/2020 09:19

People can fill their boots with Halloween if they want. Parties and that are all fine. I just fucking hate people knocking on my door. I don't ever have a pumpkin and I close my curtains etc. Why do people still fucking knock.

unmarkedbythat · 28/08/2020 09:19

I'm sure it will go ahead whether "allowed" or not.

LST · 28/08/2020 09:21

@baubled I aren't a misery guts. I am disabled with a dog that barks everytime someone knocks on my door. If I put a sign saying don't my house would probably be egged by idiot teens that are too old for it all anyway.

Deelish75 · 28/08/2020 09:28

We normally do go trick or treating but we’re not this year.
We’ll go pumpkin picking and carve it as usual and put it in the back garden with other things - not fully thought about it yet. We’ll definitely get the DC some special Halloween sweets so they’re not missing out. We’ve already had a conversation about it and they understand why.

It’s a shame as my area is really good for Halloween and this year it’s on a Saturday, hopefully next year should be good.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/08/2020 09:37

Things that haven't caused a spike in deaths:

Easter bank holiday weekend
VE day celebrations
Early May Bank holiday weekend
Late May Bank holiday weekend
People flocking to the beaches
Black lives matter protests
Reopening of nurseries / preschools
Partial reopening of schools.

Do please tell me why, if all of the above failed to create an increase in Covid fatalities, why trick or treating can't go ahead this year?

If you just don't like Halloween and don't want it to happen any year, don't hide behind Covid as an excuse. Covid is ruining enough without people grabbing it as an excuse to try to cancel anything they don't like.

bodgeitandscarper · 28/08/2020 09:45

Im hoping that my shielding elderly mother doesn't get pestered yet again this halloween, her doorbell rings until 10pm, she usually goes to bed at 8pm, her house isnt decorated and yet they still knock, and she shouldn't have to put bowls of sweets out to stop it, last time she did that a group took the lot and so the door knocking continued.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/08/2020 09:51

Shielding is officially over right now. Everything else in your post has nothing to do with Covid. I have a lot of sympathy for her being in an area with people who use Halloween as an excuse to be dicks, but there's nothing about that situation that is unique to this year.

Again, using Covid as an excuse to ban things you don't like is shitty behaviour, and may backfire on you when it's something you enjoy that's suddenly under the Covid ban-hammer.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 28/08/2020 09:59

Sadly no. I think as with all things so far this year nothing is guaranteed as likely to be canceled too. Covid is the only trick this year as hopeful that it may be less negatively impacted next year. That's unless some people generally still do not take this seriously like sticking to all Covid mitigation norms like hands, face, trace etc as there will possibly not be any effective medical cure either.

baubled · 28/08/2020 10:01

@LST it wasn't aimed at one person, it was aimed at the people who ARE misery guts

EggysMom · 28/08/2020 10:06

Put a bowl out? 🤣

You must all live in really nice areas. Round here, the first group would empty the bowl into their bags and run off laughing, leaving nothing for those who come later.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/08/2020 10:09

I live on a partly ex-council estate in Yorkshire. Putting a bowl out works here. It's what most houses do for the bit of time they're out with their own kids.

unicornpower · 28/08/2020 10:20

I fully intend to still decorate the house and get lots of sweets ready for them. I love Halloween and all the kids round by us are so sweet and polite and they're no bother at all. I like the tongs idea! definitely will do that and disinfect all the wrappers beforehand.

ChaBishkoot · 28/08/2020 10:22

I mean in the US where Halloween is much bigger than in the UK, nearly 1200 people died just yesterday. So COVID isn’t globally over no matter what you insist.

Thisismytimetoshine · 28/08/2020 10:22

I live in a really nice area. The year I put a bowl out, it went in the first 10 minutes, bowl and all 🤷🏻‍♀️
ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 28/08/2020 10:23

Decorating the front door including a tray of treats is norm in my development complex. Usually a carved candle lit pumpkin will indicate which addresses are game or not. It is a large riverside estate and gated with private security so essentially this is for young children in the development. Otherwise if one places a bowl outside a public facing front door then the bowl would required constant replenishing! Some people like the idea of happiness and fun for the little ones but not wishing to be disturbed if say living on their own or working long hours in the City etc.

AlandAnna · 28/08/2020 10:26

Funnily enough my kids were talking about this last night. Maybe because the weather has turned autumnal. I’m going to leave sweets and a pumpkin outside and see what the general plan is nearer the time. Will do something just a bit different. Kids just love it....
