Will Trick or treating go ahead this year ?

Just thinking ahead, do you think trick or treating will be banned this Halloween due to COVID-19? It is an outdoor activity, but knocking on doors and grabbing sweets from a bowl... hmmm.

@Bool

I celebrated Halloween over 40 years ago and even then it was a big thing in the U.K.! It’s the rest of Europe where it isn’t so big.
Must have depended on area, I'm 42 and it was never a big thing while I was growing up, the only even remotely Halloween activity I can remember was making Halloween biscuits at school one year!

Trick or treating had only really become a thing around here in the last 5/10 years or so, and even then 80% of houses don't do pumpkins or invite any kind of interaction 🤔

Beautiful3 · 27/08/2020 22:35

No we wont be this year.

Harrykanesrightsock · 27/08/2020 22:36

God I hope not. Always hated it.

jomaIone · 27/08/2020 22:43

I'm mid 30s and have never been trick or treating, don't remember ever having trick or treaters at my house growing up or since owning my own. Must be area dependant.

JamMakingWannaBe · 27/08/2020 22:52

I'm in my early 40's and guising was a big thing in North East Scotland growing up. We carved neeps not pumpkins back then!🎃

DD went guising round the neighborhood for the first time last year. I'd love to do the same (weather dependent) this year but it'll depend on the other Mums as going out as a group is definitely more fun.

We'll have a bowl of wrapped chocolate at home (back in the day in was a satsuma and a handful of monkey nuts, or, if you were really lucky, 20p!).💰

Still waiting to hear about Guy Falkes Night. I'm hoping the regular neighbour who does a "home show" will do the same.🎇

Newjez · 27/08/2020 22:53

No chance.

I think we'll be lucky to have Christmas

Treesofwood · 27/08/2020 22:55

Everyday is Halloween from what I can see. Masked zombies marauding the shopping centres.

happymummy12345 · 27/08/2020 22:55

I hope not. I can't stand it, to me it's grabby. You don't ask strangers for sweets or money any other time, so why is it acceptable to go knocking on doors doing it on Halloween?

indemMUND · 27/08/2020 22:56

"I'm taking my kids" well if people don't answer the door or leave anything outside then that's up to them 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's hardly difficult to plan at home activities.

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 22:57

Yes! I love seeing the local kids coming round and will have lots of treats for them.

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 22:58

Plus.. the terrifying masks will double as face coverings 😂

KnobChops · 27/08/2020 23:02

Oh yes, it’s an outside activity, minimal risk. Can always use tongs to put treats in their bags to save hands rummaging through the sweets.

Racoonworld · 27/08/2020 23:02

No way will we be answering the door to trick or treaters this year. Loads of strangers getting close rough to take sweets is not a good idea and definitely not a necessity. Surely small Halloween parties in the garden with some friends would be a better way to do Halloween this year?

AvoidingRealHumans · 27/08/2020 23:02

Halloween is a big deal where I live and I just can't see it happening this year. It's a shame because my sons love it more than Christmas. I've warned them that we might not be able to trick or treat this year but we can have a party at home, I love the Halloween pyjama and film night party so might steal that.

AvoidingRealHumans · 27/08/2020 23:04

Ooh knobchops the tongs is a good idea..

maddy68 · 27/08/2020 23:05

I hope not. It's crass at the best of times

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 23:07

The flaw with the tongs is that they all just touch those instead of the sweets....

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 23:08

Oh,,, surely not dishing out yourself with tongs?

KnobChops · 27/08/2020 23:11

Yes dish out yourself with tongs. Can have a media campaign to ask children to use those bags on a stick so they keep distance and then you put the treats on their bag with tongs. Job done.

JamMakingWannaBe · 27/08/2020 23:12

Multi packs of mini mars bars were invented for Hallowe'en. Get yourself down to B&M / Poundland.

thenightsky · 27/08/2020 23:12

God, I bloody hope Halloween is going to happen otherwise DD is going to lose her job (fancy dress industry).

Poor lass has only just got herself sorted with a mortgage.

KnobChops · 27/08/2020 23:12

Or they can put their bag / bucket on the floor and you go over and fill it, using the tongs. Come on people we just need to be creative.

Media campaign for bags on sticks....? Seriously?
MajesticWhine · 27/08/2020 23:15

I hate trick or treating and I'm sorry to be a misery guts but it would be great if it was cancelled. DD though would be devastated. Hopefully kids in class bubble can have a party instead?

TheId · 27/08/2020 23:15

Well if it doesn't I might have finally found an upside to Covid

(Bah humbug)
