Number of masks needed for a school day

Considering this question as DD4 goes into her PGCE year! How many would masks your DC need for travelling around the site on an average school day? DS4 calculates that for many, bus to school, to form, to first lesson, to second lesson, to break, from break, to third lesson, to lunch, to fourth, to final class and then on the bus home means that some DC could end up needing 11 masks. Obviously disposable ones are bad for the planet, and also, how will DC store so many?
I’m very pro-mask, but realise many DC will reuse used ones, possibly making the risk worse- how would/will your DC prepare?

Will they be allowed to wear the Adidas ones?

I've just ordered three each for my Ds's, plenty of uk sellers are on Etsy sellinv triple layer ones.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/08/2020 00:44

@InDeoEstMeaFiducia how many sinks do you think schools have to cope with students having to wash their hands regularly?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 26/08/2020 00:55

I honestly do not know anyone in real life that washes their mask after every single use.
It seems to be just once at week at most & then shoved in pockets or bags.
I think in reality this is what most of the population are doing.
So as I've banged on about it before, unless we are all wearing the highest level of protection FFP3 masks why are we bothering with paper/fabric masks that hardly offer any protection? Especially when mask wearers are not washing them, fiddling with them, ignoring distance advice etc.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/08/2020 01:03

I wash my mask after every use. To be fair I tend to only wear one a couple of times a week when I go shopping, and if I am going to a couple of shops I just keep the mask on between the shops, so no fiddling with it.

DS will be needing masks for the school bus (and possibly school) so he will probably take 2 spare with him and the one he will put on when he gets the bus in the morning. School have asked that they bring a sealable bag to put used reusable masks in

Vinoonasunnyday · 26/08/2020 01:22

Donr understand this chat

England have said masks for communal areas in lockdown areas only

So not lessons

Non lockdown areas still not advised anywhere at achool

So why are people thinking masks all day for everyone?!

... because they are primarily intended to prevent those who are infected breathing out virus on those around them, especially middle-aged & vulnerable staff, not to protect the wearer

These masks reportedly can reduce the risk to the wearer, but only if used sensibly

imo, take at least 1 mask per day plus a spare in case
and always wash the mask before wearing it another day

GailWeathers9 · 26/08/2020 01:47

Minimum 2 washable ones so you have a spare in case. Plus hand gel before touching it and something safe to store mask in. If concerned I’d provide 3 so they could change once a day and still have a spare. Hand hygiene when handling masks is key.

Mintjulia · 26/08/2020 01:51

One per day. Ds will wear a cotton mask on the morning school bus and hopefully not lose it for the evening bus.

So five for the week, in the wash and reuse.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 26/08/2020 02:17

Yes I know wearing masks is to protect other people.
But seeing the way people half heartedly wear them/don't wear them.....well I sometimes wonder what is the point & are we just told to wear them so we think we are being safe & not infecting other people.
When we could still be in some way infecting people regardless & masks only slightly minimise the risk.
The only sure fire way of not passing Covid on to anyone is to be totally wrapped in cling film & shoved in a locked cupboard & never venture out.
However as a good law abiding citizen I wear my mask.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 26/08/2020 02:19

I think kids will comply at first and wear the masks but eventually teenagers being teenagers they just won't bother or do it in a haphazard way.

Bonkerz · 26/08/2020 02:19

We use a clothes disinfectant spray in a small bottle between wears

Bonkerz · 26/08/2020 02:23

We also have a UV light bag at home for phones keys and masks when we get home.

Tavannach · 26/08/2020 03:10

Can't believe some people don't wash their masks every day.

Graciebobcat · 26/08/2020 05:41

My kids will only be wearing one per day unless the school says otherwise, they will be washed when I remember to wash them, and I won't be washing their uniform any more frequently than I normally would.

Graciebobcat · 26/08/2020 05:43

What if kids lose their masks? Do they get sent home? Just asking as DD1 has been known to lose an entire PE kit (it came back eventually) so I don't hold out much hope for a tiny square of cloth.

PC20 · 26/08/2020 06:06

I think I'm a fairly normal mum with a fairly typical DS 14yo. I work in a healthcare setting.
I bought 5 reusable masks for DS. Image for teens is so important - they had to be black.
I have (enjoyed being creative) made 5 masks for myself. I have made each of the masks a little bag (10).
I have (ex strawberry punnet) boxes - 1 by the back door with clean masks in & 1 near the washing machine for the dirties.
The plan is 1 mask a day & put it & the bag in the dirty box when coming home.
DS will wear the mask when needed (school bus & at school if required). I suspect the bag will be hidden, the mask will get stuffed in a pocket between uses. If I sent him with multiple masks - correct usage would never happen - & they will rapidly go missing.
Good luck with all of you sending multiple DCs with multiple masks!

PC20 · 26/08/2020 06:08

He will also carry a bottle of hand sanitizer

Graciebobcat · 26/08/2020 06:09

I just ordered 100 disposable ones as back up.

BillywilliamV · 26/08/2020 06:10

They don't NEED any masks, its a load of PR bollocks!

hopefulhalf · 26/08/2020 06:13

Can I ask what all your DCs have been doing up to now ? The requirement for masks isn't new or have your secondary aged DCs not gone in to a shop or a bus all Summer ?

Graciebobcat · 26/08/2020 06:17

They have about four masks each for that purpose which I'd bought them for transport and shops. That is totally different from the situation announced last night, when they will be wearing them for most of the school day. So a lot more masks will be required.

nancy75 · 26/08/2020 06:20

Dd has got a few washable masks, at the age of 15 she can decide how many she needs.
I’m more concerned about the wash uniform everyday, she has a dry clean only blazer & a very pleated heavy wool skirt that takes 2 days to dry - obviously washed everyday uniform is not going to happen

merrymouse · 26/08/2020 06:34

rainbow, the Adidas description is just explaining that it won’t offer protection to the wearer, but that is not the point of the mask rules.

talkingkrustydoll · 26/08/2020 06:47

I will be sending one. I work in a school that the teachers have been wearing masks for months. We are only allocated one disposable mask a day so don't see why they need loads.

Plus how on earth am I meant to dry two blazers every night. They take forever and say that there are meant to be dry cleaned. I can't afford a second one each so not sure how that's supposed to work.
