Number of masks needed for a school day

MyMagicStars · 25/08/2020 18:13

Considering this question as DD4 goes into her PGCE year! How many would masks your DC need for travelling around the site on an average school day? DS4 calculates that for many, bus to school, to form, to first lesson, to second lesson, to break, from break, to third lesson, to lunch, to fourth, to final class and then on the bus home means that some DC could end up needing 11 masks. Obviously disposable ones are bad for the planet, and also, how will DC store so many?
I’m very pro-mask, but realise many DC will reuse used ones, possibly making the risk worse- how would/will your DC prepare?

I would say 2. We have to wear them at work when moving around and find we need a spare as the first can get damp/sweaty. The disposable can be taken off, folded carefully in a tissue or put in a zip lock bag and be worn again the same day but obviously can't be washed. Ideally you should wash/sanitise your hands before and after handling your mask

tootyfruitypickle · 25/08/2020 19:20

One per day. Definitely not one per use on the same day. I don’t even do that out and about. It’s like washing the bloody shopping- that way madness lies!

planningaheadtoday · 25/08/2020 19:22

I calculated 6.

So x12 to allow washing of the first 6 and drying them before the next school day.

tootyfruitypickle · 25/08/2020 19:22

Also clean shirt each day of course - rest of it will last 2/3 days as usual.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 25/08/2020 19:25
  1. The fuck I'm going to send in more for this ridiculous tick-boxing exercise and wind up with even more lost ones and having to replace them. Refuse to buy those disposable ones then the young ones have to live with even more pollution on top of covid, which is going nowhere.
Rhianna1980 · 25/08/2020 19:25

I bought set of 3 washable masks from Adidas for £12. Excellent value I think.

tootyfruitypickle · 25/08/2020 19:26

If we’re wanting clean clothes each day they would need to drop uniforms, even if I washed nightly (not a chance) it wouldn’t dry in time to be used eod.

tootyfruitypickle · 25/08/2020 19:28

I’m dispatching dd I the morning to choose 2 More on Etsy, we have one each at the moment and some disposable ones. I’m open mouthed that people would wear 6 in a day !

Blownaway22 · 25/08/2020 19:30

I started a thread on S&B but no replies .. where are you all buying masks at a reasonable cost .. and that can be washed at 60 degrees c? Have four kids and it's going to add up....

NeverForgetYourDreams · 25/08/2020 19:32

And i won't be washing the jacket every day or even every week. It will get washed once a term at the end like always. I don't change my own clothes every day even !

Frenchfancy · 25/08/2020 19:33

Masks are obligatory here when dd goes back next week. Advice is 4 hours per mask, so 2 masks per day.

MiddlesexGirl · 25/08/2020 19:37

One and a spare.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/08/2020 19:37

Mine will take two per day. But washable not disposable.

I've bought all of ours on Ebay or from local Facebook sellers. About £2/3 each. I don't wash at 60° though, it's the soap that cleans them. They go in a normal 30° wash.
AveEldon · 25/08/2020 19:43

One for travel there and back (public transport)
Emergency spare in bag

Homemade and washable

Treesofwood · 25/08/2020 19:43

Imagine the germ fest on these masks. Biohazards. I watched people in a restaurant today take them off pile them and leave them on the table, folding them carefully, touching inside and out. Then masks on, off to browse the cards and books in the nearby shops. Not a covid risk. But an everything else risk. Disgusting. And I actually think they were trying to be hygienic.
Kids in schools, damp masks in pockets, on the floor, on the desk, next child at the desk etc etc etc

Exactly! That's why it's a stupid, tick boxing exercise to be seen to be doing something.

The fuck I'm going to increase my power bill washing all these on 60 as well.
motherstongue · 25/08/2020 19:50

DDs school requesting masks from tomorrow, they’re not waiting for 31st. They are to use a mask between lessons, remove and pop in a bag whilst in lessons then put back on again for next lesson. DD will take a small bottle of hand sanitiser to use once she removes her mask each time. School has made the lessons all double lessons to reduce moving about as much so realistically she will have a mask on for entering and exiting school and between classes in the corridor 4 times per day so minimal use really. Only planning on having 1 mask per day which will go in the wash basket each night. She has a few reusable ones at the moment but plan to pick up a few more tomorrow for her.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 25/08/2020 19:56

Agree tick box exercise, I can't imagine the state some of these masks will be in. I will send my DC in with 2 incase they drop or loose one.

It will only be a matter of time before we follow Scotland. It is a shame though because my ds struggles to speak properly as waiting for orthodontic treatment, as he is starting secondary I do worry about him. I wear a mask at work all day and struggle to understand People.

I have got masks from Etsy and Amazon.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 25/08/2020 20:02

Oh, the hand sanitiser, that's another thing I refuse to give in about. Just wash your hands with soap and water. Santiser is horrible for the skin because to be effective it's much akin to pouring rubbing alcohol on your skin. This cow on the train last week kept offering it to my son, who has OCD and can't use that stuff except in extreme circumstances, even after her told her 'No thank you'. I finally told her to please stop it.

InMySpareTime · 25/08/2020 20:09

The masks don't need constant disinfecting, soap will kill the virus. Keep a wide-necked water bottle, half-filled with soapy water. Add used masks to the bottle through the day and they'll be ready to hang up to dry when you get home.

Serenschintte · 25/08/2020 20:14

We are in Europe. Ds 1 is in senior school. Only has to wear them in the halls. I don’t know how many he uses a day.
Ds2 is in a small school. The can’t social distance so the wear them all the time except lunch and when outside. He has two. One for the morning and one for the afternoon. If he travelled by bus then I would give him one more - for the bus.
However he needs to be reminded to change them as he often doesn’t.
I prefer reusable as better for the environment, can be washed and then dry them outside when sunny

VividImagination · 25/08/2020 20:19

Ours have been wearing masks from yesterday. Ds has been taking one and a spare which I wash with his uniform each night.

middleager · 25/08/2020 20:21

One disposable that I reuse.
I sometimes steam mine or hang it on the line.

However, mostly they are scrunched up in my bag or pocket if I'm completely honest.
