Turned away from restaurant after temperature taken

Just curious if this has happened to anyone? And if so did you go on to have Covid19?

OP posts:
Spikeyball · 23/08/2020 09:05

The infra red I bought never gives a temp above 35 so everyone would pass on that one.

canigooutyet · 23/08/2020 09:08

Haven't been anywhere that has temperature testing.

As for hot flashes and menopause. During the heatwave I was actually dripping bucket loads, spent most of the time looking like I'd just had a shower. My temperature stayed at my normal 36.1 - 36.4. I understand what you mean about raising temperature because of the heat you feel!

I have one of those watches that monitors everything including temperature. It's very accurate. Not sure where it came from as it was a gift and haven't been nosy enough to go online and look.

Isn't normal 36 - 37.5?

Heatherjayne1972 · 23/08/2020 09:08

We don’t do the temp check at one of my dental jobs
Boss considered it pointless. You could be seeing the dentist for a tooth infection which would raise your temperature anyway! Also you could be pre or non symptomatic for Covid and have a normal temperature

Mind you at my other job my temp read 21.5 last week!

starlet14 · 23/08/2020 09:10

Imo taking temperatures for entry isn't ideal. People can have covid without a fever, people could be incubating it before a fever, people could have had it without realising. Temperature fluctuates throughout the day. It's been so hot and muggy too. If someone actually had a fever I'm sure they would be feeling poorly and notice without even having to check temperature.

There's only 2 places that we've been which have checked. I'm a nervous wreck each time. DS naturally runs high (always around 37.4-37.3) but if he's hot, he's been running around or even if he's - little excited it goes up a little to 37.5 + but I know he hasn't got a fever as this is normal for him. Thankfully it's always been just under what they will allow in.

Elizabeth110100 · 23/08/2020 09:13

That's what I thought but the screen flashes orange which I'm assuming means some kind of caution needs to be taken. When I do mine at 36.6 it flashes green.

nannybeach · 23/08/2020 09:15

Hot flushes do not affect your core temp, I have out of curiosity taken mine durin a really bad hot flush or night sweat, came up at 36c. Had to have mine taken at hairdressers, but they are not very accurate mine came up at 34.4 hot weather also will not raise your core temp. but its what they have been told they have to do, never mind the fact you can have covid, and be completely asymptomatic

nannybeach · 23/08/2020 09:16

Normally, adults with fever, present as feeling cold and shivery

Ethelswith · 23/08/2020 09:16

"My pondering is my temp is consistently on the lower side (around 36°) I check with an oral thermometer and it's been the same whenever I've had it checked as an inpatient... that's just my "normal".
So if it goes above that to what is considered normal, have I got a temperature?"

Quite possibly, but you'll never convince anyone else of it

Human temperature is a range, not one specific figure, and going above what's normal for you means you have a slight fever. I know that my resting body temperature is a little cooler than published figure, or the narrow range 36.5-37.5, but of course some of that might be down to quality of thermometer and that I measure orally.

But even though a temperature of 38 would mean I was >2 degrees warmer than normal, whereas for someone else it would be a 0.5 rise, you are unlikely to get anyone to treat as a fever until over 38

isthismylifenow · 23/08/2020 09:17

Live in another country so things may be different here. We have our temp checked everywhere so I can have it checked 6 to 8 times a day. Those infa red thermometers are a bit of a joke. I have read lowest 32 5 and highest 38. When I was over I had been inside a hot car so jusy waited a few minutes and they reread again and it was normal.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 23/08/2020 09:17

Local cancer centre checks everyone’s ear temperature on entry, gives you a health questionnaire and asks you to take off your fabric reusable mask and put on a blue disposable one which they provide. Not really surprising, and if I were them I’d be tempted to keep those measures in place permanently.

MidnightCitrus · 23/08/2020 09:26

38 °C (100.4 °F) – (Classed as hyperthermia if not caused by a fever) – Feeling hot, sweating, feeling thirsty, feeling very uncomfortable, slightly hungry. If this is caused by fever, there may also be chills.
Normal Edit
36.5–37.5 °C (97.7–99.5 °F) is a typically reported range for normal body temperature.[8]
Cold Edit
36 °C (96.8 °F) – Feeling cold, mild to moderate shivering. Body temperature may drop this low during sleep. May be a normal body temperature.

Icequeen01 · 23/08/2020 09:26

I've had my temp taken at the dentist, beauty salon and we take all our temperatures daily at work (an SEN school which has been open throughout with all the children in). The weirdest one to date was Furniture Village where we were looking for a bed 😀

bruffin · 23/08/2020 09:31

@WendyHoused

Given the hot flushes I’m having, I daren’t risk it!
Hot flushes don't raise your temperature
SirGawain · 23/08/2020 09:34

@ivykaty44

Do hot flushes change your core temperature though?
They generally use an infra-red thermometer to measure forehead temperature so your core temprature is not relevant. I don't think that you would get very far quibbling about the result.
FizzyPink · 23/08/2020 09:34

I’ve had it in a couple of restaurants recently but they just had a camera that linked to a screen on the front desk which showed you like on CCTV with a box around your head and a temperature reading.

My sister works in a gym and said theirs gives everyone the same reading so definitely not accurate!

tapdancingmum · 23/08/2020 09:39

I find it really odd that random places are taking temps when we've specifically been told not to - preschool - as it's not necessary for entry. I understand this as the children could've travelled in a hot car with a coat on or been haring around before coming in. We do have an infrared thermometer which we will use if they go downhill during the day.

I've only had mine taken at the hospital for a couple of appointments recently and like pp was worried as wearing a mask, walking uphill and the menopause make me an attractive pool of sweatiness but have registered 36.4 both times 😄

SciFiScream · 23/08/2020 09:50

We've use an in ear digital thermometer. My temperature is always less than 36°! Generally between 35.4° and 35.8°.

Everyone else in my family registers a different temp normally between 36.6° and 37.4°

Weird huh? I hate being too hot and don't like hot weather so I think I run colder than other people perhaps.

sirfredfredgeorge · 23/08/2020 09:54

Hot flushes don't raise your temperature

But they do change the temperature measured externally - although generally at the forehead it will lower it (you sweat, which lowers the temperature) Areas you don't sweat such as your cheeks can measure higher - accuracy of aiming the device might be relevant.

WanderingMilly · 23/08/2020 09:56

I went out to a restaurant for the first time on Friday, no temperature taken thank goodness. I didn't expect it and it didn't happen, not sure what I would have done if they'd turned me away, I would have been devastated....I've waited so long to go out to eat!

And no, even if they said it was raised, I wouldn't think I have COVID or get tested unless I began to experience other symptoms. I had COVID months back and know what it feels like, I assume I still have a bit of immunity but even if not and I'd caught it again, I would assume the start of it and the symptoms would follow a similar pattern and so I would know the next time around....

Chersfrozenface · 23/08/2020 09:56

Had temperature read three times when entering restaurants recently.

One was with a device like an iPad with a box on the screen you have to fit the image of your head into, which was happy with me.

Two were forehead scanning devices, neither of which worked at all on me at the first attempt. At the second attempt one gave my temperature as 32 (I had just walked 3/4 of a mile in 30 degree heat and I'm overweight) and the other, pointed at my neck instead, said 34. So, no, I don't think they are accurate.

Still, none indicated an elevated temperature so I was allowed in.

canigooutyet · 23/08/2020 10:02

@Naticus

My pondering is my temp is consistently on the lower side (around 36°) I check with an oral thermometer and it's been the same whenever I've had it checked as an inpatient... that's just my "normal". So if it goes above that to what is considered normal, have I got a temperature? 🤔
Talk to your medical team.

Once mine gets to 37 it starts to shoot up very quickly, so I have to start trying to reduce at that point. However, I do have a load of health issues, and around 37.5 I start to dehydrate very quickly. I've been this way for years.

As a pp mentioned, hardly anyone believes it though 😂Before the trust went digital, the gp would send me to a&e with a letter to get me seen and in block capital underlined used to mention something about I have abnormal temp.

Nikori · 23/08/2020 10:03

My work uses an infra red thermometer at the entrance. Mine was over the other day, it was hot and I was rushing to work a bit. I took a few moments to cool down and it was fine and they let me in. It is very heart-in-your-mouth though.

Baaaahhhhh · 23/08/2020 10:06

I had mine checked at mums care home last week, your're fine they said, 34.6 !!!!!!! Nonsense.

gamerchick · 23/08/2020 10:07

So, what was your temp OP.

Nikori · 23/08/2020 10:10

@gamerchick

So, what was your temp OP.
I think the OP already said that her temp was fine and it was just a hypothetical asking if anyone had been turned away.
