New continuous cough - negative test

As title says, yesterday I started coughing... just a niggle / tickle thrust at first. Then developed into non stop coughing fits. Had blocked sinuses and a cold day before. Went for a test results came back negative today. I'm just nervous to trust it - meant to be going on holiday tomorrow. I feel other than annoying cough!

Omg you've previously had coughs right? And they weren't covid 19.....

You tested negative! Enjoy your holiday!

Other viruses still exist. I’m just getting over a horrible cold. My in-laws all had stomach bugs last week kindly passed from my nieces nursery. I know people will be on here banging on about false negatives but we can’t stop living because we might have had a false negative. Especially as we head into winter where millions of similar symptom causing viruses exist! There’ll be no kid in my daughters nursery if we have to isolate because of the possibility of false negatives. My DD has a cough every other week most winters 🥴

whatswithtodaytoday · 22/08/2020 20:56

We had a virus within a couple of weeks of my kid going back to nursery. Fever, sore throat, cough. We all tested negative and it went within a week. I think it was probably tonsillitis, but regardless there are plenty of other viruses out there.

I wish people would get to grips with the fact that there are numerous other illnesses around that aren’t Covid.

LeggyLinda · 22/08/2020 21:20

I understand your anxiety considering all the hype about Covid-19. I don’t want to minimise the Covid-19 epidemic, but, as others have said, there are a million and one different causes of a cough.

You’re tested negative so it is likely to be one of those.
Enjoy your holiday - but be careful not to spread your cough regardless.

BeeTrees · 22/08/2020 23:05

You can test negative before later testing positive. Day 5 I think is best time, you can always request another one.
Like the outbreaks and they are sending staff back to work with a negative test, they can still develop the virus up to 14days and then test positive and they are not quarantining

Thanks everyone, I'm not too anxious really it's just so unusual for me to ever get a cough! Colds yes, get them all the time but haven't had a cough in forever... so convinced myself it would be positive. Made be doubt the result when I got it. I'll take the negative for what it is and hopefully enjoy my holiday more when I stop coughing!

My dh and ds both have cold with a cough. But their symptoms into the Zoe app and I have to presume it's just a cold.

Without a fever it's just a sore throat and cough. Besides the Zoe app is saying that infection rates in my area are extremely low. 4 in a million reported cases last week. It's statistically more likely to not be covid

I have had a continuous cough for 4 months now. It WAS a chest infection..but GP kept making excuses not to see me, saying chest infections usually go away on their own (odd, as usually I get told to come in straight away as its important to get them treated Hmm , 'wait a week and see', 'wait, if it stops you breathing completely go to hospital!' etc. Eventually realised they couldn't put me off much longer so tried one final delaying tactic of 'since its a cough, you need a covid test' and then finally saw me, just to tell me its definitely a chest infection (had said this for weeks), and because I had 'waited so long' to get it seen to, I may now have permanent lung damage...and next time will I please come in sooner as it is better for me and makes treating it easier too, talked over me when I tried saying I had been TRYING. I actually shouted in the surgery at this stage..am not proud to say. But my god..what a saga.

Cough is still here. Chest xray cannot be done yet apparently...

Worst time to have a cough as people look at you as if you are a walking biohazard, which is understandable in a way but annoying in another! Makes me not want to leave house at all tbh as I know I will be deathstared everywhere..

BananaPop2020 · 22/08/2020 23:40

I have ongoing, long term sinus problems. The Zoe app has offered me a Covid test several times now, which I have declined to take because I know my own body. I hope you do as your post indicates, take the result for what it is and enjoy your holiday.
