Test on return from Quarantine list country

Currently in a country which is on the exempt from quarantine list (Italy) and due home next weekend. With cases on the increase right across Europe I'm under no illusion that by the time we are due to travel we could well have to quarantine, and I'm totally on board with that and happy to do so. Younger DS really keen to miss as little school as possible - and would miss one week if the worse should happen (our first week back would still be summer hols)

I've seen 2 separate things today (1 relating to schools going back and 1 relating to a H&S risk assessment for work) about how if you test on day 1 of your return and it's negative, if by day 8 you are still without symptoms you can return to school.

Does anyone know if this is true and if so link to the government advice that says so, I can't find it anywhere. When I saw it the first time I thought it was rubbish but now having seen it a second time I'm keen to know if it's correct - if only so DS can go back sooner to school.

It’s something the travel industry has suggested, but not government policy as it stands.

No, the government has said they are looking into options for testing instead of a long quarantine but have said you would need a test on day 1, and then another test on day 8, and by the time you get the results you've almost spent the 14 days in quarantine anyway so it's not something they are currently going to implement.

It is a suggestion. It has not become policy. One negative test, one week quarantine, then a second negative test. In effect, shortening quarantine from 14 days to 10 or 11 days, that’s all. But it hasn’t been approved

Ahh ok - thanks for the clarification. I'm getting limited info here as only checking the BBC news periodically so couldn't see where they'd got this info from.
Tbh as a PP said by time you've done the tests you may as well be at 14 days anyway.
We will keep watching and waiting to see if any other countries go on the list through this week. We've already cancelled our French hotel stopover.... now to wait and see if we can do Germany.....

At the moment I’m looking forward to quarantine. We’re away too.

School start is going to be a mess and missing a week gives us more time to decide what is best to do with our kids.
