@Vinoonasunnyday

I don’t know but I’m guessing they’ll know who’s in each lesson? Most kids don’t have symptoms so are unlikely to be tested anyway so isolations I imagine will be common

To be fair everyone near me (local to Liverpool) is pretty chilled and no one is really that bothered bout Covid generally

I don’t know anyone distancing genuinely

Same here.
OLGADEEPOLGA · 22/08/2020 18:56

You try wearing a mask all day OP and then ask the question again.

FarquarKumquatsmama · 22/08/2020 18:56

Haven’t rtft but was back teaching (European country) teenagers before the summer hols. The - simple and easy to follow rule - was wear a mask when moving. Sitting at a desk was fine without mask, only one kid per desk unless it was cleaned.
Kids are not stupid. Give them more credit. They realize how serious this pandemic is. They kept their masks on. One of my kids forgot his mask and was allowed to go without as he was the ONLY kid in the school without one. A group
Of older kids in his school did not observe social distancing though. They were warned once and sent home the second time.
Why can’t the UK do this? Confused

China have worn masks for years so if they work how was China so badly affected given people worn the masks before an during the outbreak?

Notfeelinggreattoday · 22/08/2020 18:58

@unrulytoenails it may be simple bit if you think kids won't forget over 7.5 hrs and won't fidget with mask ,also should they all be carrying around a bottle of hand gel ? If so what if some parents don't provide ?
Im not sure what evidence is or even if there is any on wearing of a mask for 7 hrs a homemade or basic one
All studies i see seem to be for short term , i know when i weAr mine it becomes damp after 30 mins , (maybe thats just me)
Maybe masks when walking through corridors but not sure if a damp mask is protective - maybe it is - if anyone has a study let me know?
I have brought my son some incase and if they become compulsory plan to send him with 2 so he changes at lunchtime, and will be sending him with some handgel as well

I've been to China. It might ASTOUND people but not every person in China wears a mask all the time. It's fairly rare actually. And I have never been somewhere with so many people in such small areas.

I saw more spitting than masks.

Kitcat122 · 22/08/2020 19:07

My teens hated the masks at first but have got used to them now as have I.

Pixxie7 · 22/08/2020 19:09

I think it should be voluntary.

Discobar · 22/08/2020 19:09

Teachers in my wife's secondary school have a first day walkout planned if they are not allowed to wear their own visor- if they want too.

Not bothered about kids wearing masks but teacher's should be able to do what they want and feel safer in their workplace

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 22/08/2020 19:48

Should be worn.

Did youbread the article or just jump on a headline that you thought agreed with you?

It doesn't say masks should be worn in schools at all, it simply says:

"Children aged 12 and over should wear a mask under the same conditions as adults"

So when it is mandated that adults should wear masks, children over 12 should also wear them. Which is what we already have (except we've gone with 11)

Discobar · 22/08/2020 19:59

It says more than that "in particular when they cannot guarantee a distance of at least one metre from others and there is widespread transmission in the area"

SaltyAndFresh · 22/08/2020 19:59

Those of you worrying about your children having to wear masks for a very long time each day will, of course, be happy enough when they end up at home due to partial or full shutdowns. At least they won't feel uncomfortable Hmm

Yes, in line with local regulations, it doesn't say masks should be worn in schools, only that children over 12 should follow the same requirements as adults
Discobar · 22/08/2020 20:06

Well there's no way school kids wil be able to keep to 1m really is there?

SaltyAndFresh · 22/08/2020 20:07

Why do the Us4Us knobheads insist on telling teachers who want their own health protected that they're in the wrong job? Do you want us to say we'll go to any lengths to make sure your children are ok, even if that means a good chance of catching a virus that could cause long term health problems? And yes, knobheads (I'm in the wrong job, right?)

CKBJ · 22/08/2020 20:08

Just come here to say the latest from WHO-not that we necessarily follow what they say...takes us at least a month, but it’s already been stated.
@FinnyStory no it doesn’t stay masks should be worn in schools it says:
Children aged 12 and over should wear a mask under the same conditions as adults, in particular when they cannot guarantee a distance of at least one metre from others and there is widespread transmission in the area.... can they guarantee a distance of one metre in school... NO! In places in England experiencing higher levels of transmissions secondary’s should return with the mask rule.

Younger children: For children aged between six and 11, the WHO advises taking into account how widespread the transmission of the virus is and whether the child is interacting with high-risk individuals such as the elderly. It also stresses the need for adult supervision to help children use, put on and take off masks safely. So if you have a vulnerable/high risk teacher again they should be worn.

And for teachers:
For teachers, the WHO says: "In areas where there is widespread transmission, all adults under the age of 60 and who are in general good health should wear fabric masks when they cannot guarantee at least a one-metre distance from others.
"This is particularly important for adults working with children who may have close contact with children and one another." Can teachers, particularly in high tramission areas in England guarantee to keep 1m distance. NO! so masks should be implemented in the return to school. 2weeks to go other areas will no doubt be added to high transmission areas.

RaspberryRuff · 22/08/2020 20:10

UforT Scotland now appear to be looking for money to fight the masks issue and claiming it won’t be temporary? They are crazy

Vinoonasunnyday · 22/08/2020 20:11

Lockdowns won’t happen in same way they did earlier so schools won’t close

Spanish Covid cases (per day) are currently higher than the TOTAL number of cases they had when they imposed their strict lockdown and they haven’t closed anything other than night clubs!

No other country has gone into lockdown again dispite rising cases!

They’re living with it

As will we from now on

Country can’t afford it again and people and gov don’t have the appwtitue for it anymore

Other than on Mumsnet people don’t care!

Vinoonasunnyday · 22/08/2020 20:13

appetite

FlySheMust · 22/08/2020 20:14

41 Berlin schools report Corona infections 2 weeks after opening again.

If we want schools to remain open then we have to give them the best chance. And masks will help with that.

SaltyAndFresh · 22/08/2020 20:17

@LindainLockdown

Why don't you stay at home for the foreseeable *@SaltyAndFresh*, do everyone a favour.
I don't want to stay home. I want to do my job in reasonable safety (not absolute safety, I realise that's not possible). Do not tell me I should leave my job and put my family in financial peril to suit your agenda of having everything back to normal as if there wasn't a worldwide pandemic accelerating again right now.
Pixxie7 · 22/08/2020 20:19

I think a lot of people still care, they are just confused about the guidance given and quite frankly sick of their lives being restricted.

Vinoonasunnyday · 22/08/2020 20:23

I can’t qhree because I genuinely don’t know anyone who cares about Covid rules etc

Why do people think they’re all going to die of Covid?

People in their 80s have a 90% surviving! It’s such an irrational fear it’s actually embarrassing
