Baby has a cold

But we're going to have to get tested again are t we?
I am 100% confident that DS has a cold. Main symptom a very runny nose. However this morning he had a wee cough. 3 episodes today will mean we all have to be bloody tested again. I'm hoping it was a fluke and he doesn't cough again but knowing my luck he will. I can't even find clear guidance in Scotland as to if he should be tested or not because of his age.

Can you call 111/119 for advice?

You won't all have to get tested unless you are all showing symptoms? But if it's a continuous cough you'll have to isolate?

I'd second ringing 111 for advice as I'm not sure what age babies can be tested.

If he meets the 3 episodes in 24 hours I'll call them, at the moment it's just 1 and I'm pretty sure it was because he was lying down so fingers crossed.

My DS who is 3 months old has just got over a cold. My older DS is at nursery so always bringing things back. Only time he ever coughed was when he was on his back and very infrequently but then to be fair he's done this since he was born. He only had a runny nose and as did I no other symptoms so no need to test.
I possibly had covid back in March along with my older DS and we literally could not stop coughing.

I'm in the same boat. DD 5 months started with a cough this morning, she has been coughing quite a few times. Also seems a little bunged up.
DD 17 months also snotty but no cough.
I'm starting to feel a little off myself now.
Not sure if we have to get tested with her only having the one symptom.
Sure it's just a cold.

We're in the same boat today with our 16 month old. He was up all night coughing (with snotty nose) and still coughing in the morning once up and about so DH took him off for a drive through test this morning. He said it was awful and he's not at all sure he managed to get a decent swab.

I was surprised there wasn't any guidance I could see for little ones, and that it's not a trained HCP that does the swab when they're so wee. It's going to be a nightmare throughout autumn and winter having to test every time our small kids pick up a cough.

Only the person with symptoms needs to be tested, the rest of you won’t unless you too show symptoms.

doodledo92 · 21/08/2020 12:54

Well I spoke to 111 and they advised me she doesn't need a test unless she develops any other symptoms

mylittlesandwich · 21/08/2020 16:52

Good to know @doodledo92 I just don't see any way you could successfully test a baby. His cough has died off so I'm not overly worried at the moment.

@mylittlesandwich yeah same here. Her coughs died off as well, she's just really bunged up now so thinking just a cold
