No idea if it would be the right thing for the economy or infection rates but if they did extend it I can’t deny I would make use of it :o

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 18/08/2020 18:36

Why? Surely you don’t think that it’ll be a long term scheme?

Janaih · 18/08/2020 18:37

Hate it, cant get a table anywhere decent.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 18/08/2020 18:39

YANBU Grin We'll continue to eat out a couple of times a week anyway but if the government offer to foot part of the bill, I'm not going to turn it down!

Orchidsindoors · 18/08/2020 18:51

It's been brilliant. Weve eaten out at least 6 times and got another 6 booked. Saved us loads of money.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/08/2020 18:52

I find it isn’t that cheap unless you stick to just a main and a glass of tap water! Yesterday’s Italian dinner cost me £30, one starter, a main and a small glass of wine.

You dont get the discount on alcoholic drinks. Its 50% off up to a tenner each, so if you choose a meal that would normally be a tenner and a drink that's quite a big saving if your party is 4 or 5.

Orchidsindoors · 18/08/2020 19:09

Bigsandyballs...thinking about it, are you sure where you went was using the 50% off deal? Say we say your wine was a fiver, that means they charged you £25 for a starter and main. If that was 50% off, that means a starter and main was usual £50 where you went? Sounds a bit steep?

DoIneed1 · 18/08/2020 19:11

Isn't it only up to £10 off?

WentworthPrison · 18/08/2020 19:11

But we're all paying for it with our taxes (including those that can't even go out).

Youngatheart00 · 18/08/2020 19:12

Yes I wish they’d extend it into September so that some child - free dining is a possibility!

Belindabelle · 18/08/2020 19:12

It's 50% off up to a max of $10 per head. Not 50% of the total bill.

AlohaMolly · 18/08/2020 19:13

I’d quite like them to extend it for another month - I live ina huge tourist hotspot and we haven’t really had a chance to use it because everywhere is so busy! Most of our village residents would happily use it in September when it would be a bit quieter.

tentative3 · 18/08/2020 19:15

@WentworthPrison

But we're all paying for it with our taxes (including those that can't even go out).
We all pay for lots of things via our taxes that we might not use ourselves. And those people working in the restaurants and supply chains that the scheme is designed to help pay taxes too, which in turn fund things that others benefit from. Whether the scheme is or isn't a good thing economically I don't think your argument stands up especially well.
WentworthPrison · 18/08/2020 19:19

Yes I'm aware of that but usually more essential stuff than getting money off a meal (it's not money off if we're paying for it is it!)Hmm

SecretSpAD · 18/08/2020 19:20

We're enjoying it as our favourite seafood restaurant is taking part! I'm in Cornwall, however, and actually the timing is not the right time for us - it's October and November when people are going to need an incentive to go out for meals....that's when the tourists have gone and the locals - who are often lower paid and so eating out is a rare treat - are left.

At the risk of derailing the thread slightly, the SW region has been a bit screwed over by the govts response to the entire pandemic and the tourist and hospitality industries have been very badly hit.

Anyone would think that they were so complacent about the Tory vote down here that they don't have to bribe us with meaningless bollocksy spin around "levelling up"

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 18/08/2020 19:22

My older kids' school canteen has managed to register for this, so I'm all for it. I don't like to eat out, but the money off school lunches is handy.

knittingaddict · 18/08/2020 19:23

Lots of restaurants have hated it. Too busy with some rude, entitled customers on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, dead the rest of the week.

We've eaten out, but avoided cut price days like the plague. Grin

There's over three million people employed in the hospitality sector. I'd say that taking measures to keep them in employment is pretty essential.
IndiaMay · 18/08/2020 19:27

Its been great. Bill's is the best, their 3 course set menu is normally £20 and includes a free class of wine. It's a tenner mon to wed at the moment! For 3 courses and a glass of wine!!

WentworthPrison · 18/08/2020 19:28

You could say that about a lot of sectors though couldn't you. Half price airline tickets, half price gym visits etc

SueEllenMishke · 18/08/2020 19:33

It's been brilliant. We had lunch in a local fancy cafe today and it cost £11 for 3 of us.

ChaoticGouda · 18/08/2020 19:36

I'd love that too Smile I only seem to remember the scheme when it's the wrong day of the week Grin

Gotta love that raised eyebrow emoji.

It'll cost a lot more for all those people to lose their jobs, go on UC, the premises to stay empty, landlords and councils would lose income etc. And as I said, the fact that some can't participate (I thought shielding had been paused?) isn't a reason not to do something. Or do you think we should all get a go on furlough too?

vagabondmama · 18/08/2020 19:40

Yes, I really want them to extend it. Love my half price Nandos
