I've posted before about how our media post misleading images of SD in schools. This is a fair reflection of what our senior schools will look like . Would you be happy being one of those people in the picture, with no mask?

I wouldn’t be happy being one of those people with a mask.

It is supposed to be mask plus social distancing.

Lazypuppy · 15/08/2020 09:14

I wouldn't mind, but i'm not worried about catching COVID, to me its just a matter of time, and hopefully i'm fit and healthy enough to fight it off. Life can't be stopped fot much longer

Its how i've always thought schools would be going back. They can distance a bit more in lessons but not in the hallways

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/08/2020 09:17

I'd be fine with that but I'm not scared of catching coronavirus.

Letseatgrandma · 15/08/2020 09:18

No, definitely not.

I wonder if the press will still be using their stock photos of 8 tiny children spread out on separated tables across a classroom, wearing masks, for their September back to school articles?!

ssd · 15/08/2020 09:20

It's not good enough.

People saying oh I'll be fine are missing the point. It's not about you it's about all of us.

Those teens will go home to mum dad gran etc and could be carrying the virus.

Teachers and school staff as well as pupils are being thrown to the dogs.

WhenSheWasBad · 15/08/2020 09:20

I’ll be in a secondary school teaching come Sept.

I’m not happy about the lack of masks in secondary schools. Schools absolutely have to go back, it’s not fair on the pupils to keep them shut any longer.

But I’m worried that if we return with no social distancing and no masks we will end up with outbreaks and school closures by November.

Mintjulia · 15/08/2020 09:22

To be fair, that looks like no thought has gone into social distancing at all.

Our school has created outside (tented) class rooms and dining areas for the first half term at least, staggered lunch breaks, distanced pick-up & drop-offs, a one way system, removed the use of lockers etc.

We need to get children back to school but it can be done a lot more carefully than this.

DipSwimSwoosh · 15/08/2020 09:32

I'd be happy.
I'm a teacher in secondary and think teenagers have given enough now. If they live with someone vulnerable or are vulnerable themselves there should be an alternative, but for the majority this is what they need. I would rather not wear a mask and I'm sure many teenagers feel the same. Yes, we are at risk of catching the virus, but if we do, we are unlikely to suffer too badly.
I'd like to see vulnerable staff members properly protected of course.

Kitcat122 · 15/08/2020 09:33

All you people who say you don't care about catching it because you are young and fit. This is such a selfish attitude! What about other people or children who maybe aren't so healthy. You could pass it to someone who does get very ill. I know we can't control it 100% but we can try and do our best to protect the vulnerable in our society with SD and masks.

DipSwimSwoosh · 15/08/2020 09:36

I am claustrophobic and don't go anywhere that requires a mask though. And I don't see relatives, they live too far away. I am happy to go to work as a teacher, teach and come home to my young family, and only see friends who are happy to social distance, and know we are all in and out of schools.

GreyishDays · 15/08/2020 09:36

I didn’t know some US states go back so early, just googled and they absolutely do though. Just thought I’d mention for other people wondering when the photo could have been taken.

knittingaddict · 15/08/2020 09:39

"I'm alright Jack". No social conscience? No community spirit?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/08/2020 09:41

The OP literally asked "would you be happy being one of those people." I answered the question. I'm aware that other people may not be.

Swelteringmeltering · 15/08/2020 09:41

Visors.

There is no reason why visors can't be worn.
They are not perfect but seeing as it lives in the throat and humans talk face to face, masks would offer some protection.

A bit of plastic? Catch sneezes, coughs and remind everyone we are still in a pandemic? I'm baffled as to why visors are not compulsory

museumum · 15/08/2020 09:42

I wouldn’t be “happy” but I’d accept it for the sake of a proper education. Kids have lost half a year already.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/08/2020 09:43

It looks like a normal school???
Where's the furore every single flu season about unvaccinated teenagers risking taking the flu home to their parents and risking killing off their grandparents?

Tracing systems are working. We are finding mild and assymptomatic cases that previously passed unnoticed. While cases identified in the community are increasing, the serious cases resulting in hospitalisation or death have not increased accordingly.

Flu is currently killing more people than Covid! Yet that should also be contained by the same protective measures.

Teenagers have given months of their education- new y11s/ y13s have lost quarter of their teaching time. Young people need to learn with their peers and interact, not muffled and concealed behind masks. Not having to justify their physical or mental health to be exempt. Not being distanced and unable to understand their teachers.

They have already given more than enough for the least benefit.

Illusionordelusion · 15/08/2020 09:44

Yes I would be happy. Work in a similar FE environment. I don’t think kids are being thrown to the dogs. They certainly would be if they were left at home any longer.

I’m young, white and slim.
I appreciate I am fortunate.

If I had a few risk factors I would resign. I can’t take the “if I’m not ok then nobody else should be ok”..... that’s just an inverted I’m ok Jack attitude.

My mums a fat nurse and is choosing not to return for the time being. She isn’t then begrudging everybody else.

MigGril · 15/08/2020 09:45

No I wouldn't be happy and some of our schools donate corridors that wide either. I can tell you know I see school closures in the autumn term. Yes we may all go back, but there will be schools being shut due to local outbreaks and I wish the government had actually provided funds for a) extra cleaning in schools (its coming out of our normal budget) b) More resources for distant learning when it happens, we had quite a few students with no computer access at home. The longer they where off the longer that list got.

Anyone who thinks it's not going to happen and it'll all be business as normal has blinkers on.

ProfMcGonigle · 15/08/2020 09:46

DD (15) returned to high school this week (scotland) and says this is pretty much what the corridors are like.

Head teacher pays lip service to social distancing but doesn't allow the opportunity to do so.

Another example - in their social space, tables have been removed. However, not tables from the middle, they have removed tables from the 'end' so the others are still spaced the same as always.

I predict another spike

Kitcat122 · 15/08/2020 09:48

A large portion of the population including most primary school children are vaccinated against flu so it has a large herd immunity so can't really be compared to a new virus.
Answering the Ops question no definitely not happy about this being my reality in September but hey as so many say I'm young fit white so I will be fine 🙄

SengaStrawberry · 15/08/2020 09:48

How many threads about this do there have to be?

Some people don’t want kids back at school fully and are convinced it’s going to kill thousands. We get it. What’s the point or an alternative solution that actually also involves children getting a proper education?

arethereanyleftatall · 15/08/2020 09:50

Yes, I would be happy.

PurpleDaisies · 15/08/2020 09:52

Not at all. I absolutely think kids should be back at school. Schools should be smarter about social distancing than this.

notevenat20 · 15/08/2020 09:52

The children themselves are very unlikely to get seriously ill. So the only question is how much of their lives do we want to sacrifice to benefit ourselves. My view is that we should do everything we can, including if needs be more social distancing, shutting pubs etc to keep schools fully open.

Orchidflower1 · 15/08/2020 09:53

Ok so the people saying they’re not bothered about catching Covid- imagine for one awful minute that you and you next door neighbour both get it and both need treatment. However there is only space for one of you. You’d obviously be happy for your neighbour to have the spot wouldn’t you 🤔
