Confused by the cinema mask rules

What exactly are the rules for mask wearing in cinemas? The BBC says you have to wear a mask at the cinema (in England). But our local cinema says you can take it off once you are sat down. Who is right?

I think you have to wear it but can take it off to eat and drink. Which could be most of a film if you have popcorn.

I was at the cinema a few days ago and was told you have to wear them when walking around, loo, communal areas etc but once sat in your seat you can take it off

Obviously you can keep it on once seated if you prefer too

Presumably so you can eat/ drink etc

I thoroughly enjoyed my cinema trip, all nicely distanced etc

Surely it's the same as in restaurants and cafes, so you wear it until you're sat at a table as you're socially distanced then.

Just wear the mask

If you have to take it off to eat, no-one is going to come and tell you off.

But the clear intention is that masks are to be worn.

It's also perfectly clear that some people intend never to,wear a mask unless forced. That is why my family (one recently deshielded) is finding there are many doors (metaphorically) closed to us. Being literally isolated for that long was shit, finding that you're still effectively excluded isn't great either

But masks aren't required in restaurants in England, even when walking around

I went to cinema last weekend, we wore to go on.

But had food and drink so took them down when lights went out ,bearing in mind it was a imax screen and next people were 100m away.

We went to the cinema today. It said to wear a mask unless eating or drinking so we just wore them when watching the film but moved them to drink. I didn’t have pop corn though, if I did I probably would have taken it off for most of the film to eat it. It was dead though, there were only 2 other people in the whole screening who were a few rows away

You have to wear them unless eating or drinking.

That’s very interesting. Looks like our cinema is playing it a bit fast and loose when it says you don’t have to wear a mask when sat down.
