I'm going on holiday on Monday to Crete.
Do you think it's still "safe" to go?
I've heard mixed messages about possible lockdowns etc

I think it's safe in so far as no riskier than here. I wouldn't go though.two weeks isolation without my kids would probably send me over the edge if they bring it in. Are you going somewhere with the curfew? What if hey extend the hours? I just don't think it's worth it.

latticechaos · 11/08/2020 07:14

Greece has said it is in its second wave, they reacted fast the first time so they may do the same again.

This must be stressful, presumably you lose plenty of money if you cancel?

Pertella · 11/08/2020 07:15

We got back from Crete a couple of days ago. It was probably 'safer than here if anything.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/08/2020 07:16

Make sure you have filled in the online form and got the QR code before you go, I've heard a few people not being allowed to travel to Greece as they didn't have them.

beetroottt · 11/08/2020 07:20

It is Stalis in Crete where we are going.
The holiday cost nearly £3000 for 3 of us.
We were originally going to Spain that was cancelled so we booked here.

Travelling can not be safer than not travelling!

It doesn't mean people shouldn't opt to travel, but this is a myth I see repeated often.

Even if you live in Leicester, during their peak, the best option is stay at home and follow guidelines, not travel.

beetroottt · 11/08/2020 07:21

@CeeceeBloomingdale filled my form in on Sunday,I've heard some people being turned away from airport.

The hospitals in Greece are extremely basic, are you insured to even use the private hospitals. The infection rate is climbing, and in a country ravaged by financial issues for the last ten years - the healthcare is creaking at the best of times.
I want to say yes go and support them, but I am worried for the people of Greece being flooded by infection from tourists and not being able to cope. The first wave barely touched Greece as it was out of season, the second wave could be horrendous.

Personally I would not go. I would not want to be caught up in a lockdown or a second wave. I think flights are dangerous due to a lack of socially distancing and quite frankly it is 33c here so no need for more heat!!

Pertella · 11/08/2020 07:27

OP. We were in Stalis.

Not too busy at all, plenty of social distancing and all bar and restaurant staff are in masks or face visors.

Pertella · 11/08/2020 07:29

Travelling can not be safer than not travelling!

Well, as I've literally just done it, I'll go with what I know rather than what you think, ta.

beetroottt · 11/08/2020 07:33

@Pertella oh thanks for that,I feel better now.
The area seems lovely and we are all inclusive so won't really be eating out in restaurants.

Greece has had very low numbers; now they've started rising steeply. They locked down fast and hard last time because their health system can't cope with too much and they're already saying rising cases are an issue. I can't find the figures but they were fine yet growing last week at 7.2/100,000 and doubling the cases this week, so by next week that puts you at risk of quarantine in the UK even if Greece doesn't shut down. I wouldn't do it personally OP, can you see if the company will transfer you to an Easter break?

Parsley1234 · 11/08/2020 07:38

I’m here right now in a villa it’s fine - they test you at the airport but don’t seem to send the result 🥴 the Greeks are pretty relaxed although our cook has said they are not happy to have brits here due to our R rate. I would come enjoy !

PegasusReturns · 11/08/2020 07:39

Well, as I've literally just done it, I'll go with what I know rather than what you think, ta

And this is why we’re doomed Hmm

Of course not travelling is the safest thing to do, you are in contact with fewer people which means there is less risk of transmission.

The fact that one poster travelled and was fine dies not negate the risk overall.

latticechaos · 11/08/2020 07:40

Almost every traveller will be absolutely fine, but it is just fact that the safest place is in your house permanently.

That isn't what I'm doing btw, I'm going out, but saying it is safer to travel is just like saying the earth is flat because I can't see it curve.

beetroottt · 11/08/2020 07:46

Probably should have put it in my first post but it's me and my boyfriend plus his mum (she has been shielding for 4 months) due to COPD
She's desperate for a break and has anxiety issues and really needs a change of scenery.

Doooooooomed I tells ya!

We are probably more doomed by people making up their own arguments so they can swoop in all holier than thou to admonish people like a bunch of latter day Cromwells 🖕. Hmm

Friendsoftheearth · 11/08/2020 07:51

Your boyfriends' mother ha COPD and you are taking her on a plane and overseas?!!!
No wonder she has anxiety issues, she would be at massive risk if she caught covid!!!!!!!!

Seriously book a quiet hotel a few hours from home, keep away from everyone else and be sensible.

Your bf's mother has been shielding because she is AT RISK and she may very well need a change of scene, but taking her through a germ riddled airport, on a plane with zero social distancing with hundreds of strangers and then to holiday destination with very limited healthcare is utterly insane!!!

Jesus christ.

beetroottt · 11/08/2020 07:53

It was her idea to book.
I was thinking the Lake District or Yorkshire.
She's very head strong and if she sets her mind on something it's hard to change it.

Just got back froma different Greek island. I felt much safer there than here. It was still incredibly quiet (and I statued in a main resort). The Greeks we spoke to said they are desperate for tourism and welcome us. We were asked many times by the Greek waiters etc if we felt safe. Masks worn by waiters, bar staff etc everywhere, sanitiser everywhere and beach beds and tables adequately distanced. It also did not feel like a weird or different holiday except my parents were randomly selected for a test on arrival (they don’t send a result unless you have it). Enjoy your holiday.

Pertella · 11/08/2020 07:54

Yeah, taking someone not in the best of health isn't the best idea really. But at the end of the day, its her risk to take and I'm sure she is best placed to assess her own circumstances.
Worriedmum999 · 11/08/2020 07:54

To go from shielding to travel abroad is absolute madness let alone to a country with dubious healthcare, rising cases and the potential stress of a lockdown. Humans are truly stupid.

MRex · 11/08/2020 07:54

Oh, well if a Greek cook has a different idea about the R rate than basic maths, then she must be right. And if she knows the increase is coming from the British then she should let her government know to stop demanding additional test certificates for tourists from Bulgaria and Romania.

Scientists need to pay much more attention to what the Greek cooks think rather than data.

latticechaos · 11/08/2020 07:56

@beetroottt

For someone with COPD it will be more risky to travel than if you were all very fit. What do they think.of the risk?

Many people who were shielding are carrying on informally, as the risks are actually up.now on a month ago.

beetroottt · 11/08/2020 07:59

@latticechaos she is in the mind frame she's shielded for months and she's realised it's really effected her mental health, she wants to come away with us,she's been on her own for months.
Obviously we did food at door step drops and spoke at door (well we were at garden gate )
She's so lonely and she's happy to risk it now.
