Covid test - how painful is it?

I’m having a section in a couple of weeks and will be having a covid test at the hospital two days before.

I’m dreading it as I have pregnancy rhinitis and am so bunged up and I am suffering from frequent nosebleeds as I have in the last few weeks of all my pregnancies - at least three a day.

The thought of them shoving a swab so far back in my nose is giving me nightmares - I think I’m dreading it more than the section!

Am I just being a wuss?

It's really not bad at all. I had a drive through test where you swab yourself. It wasn't painful at all, I did it in my own time and was in control of how far up my nose/throat I swabbed.
They told me roughly how far I had to go and I did it. I was about 6 months pregnant when I did it.
See if you can swab yourself. Don't stress Smile

It's not painful. Just REALLY tickles when they do your nose!

AreweatChristmasyet · 07/08/2020 21:23

Not at all. Just like jabbing a finger to the back of your nose

Wankpuffin · 07/08/2020 21:25

Oh and the throat! I also have hypermesis and I’m still being sick 4-6 times a day. I can just see myself puking and having a massive nosebleed!

I had one at the hospital and really wasn’t that bad. Was over very quickly

Pelleas · 07/08/2020 21:27

Not painful, just a bit uncomfortable really.

PerspicaciaTick · 07/08/2020 21:27

I had two in hospital recently. The first was absolutely fine. The second had me crawling backwards up the bed in an effort to get away. It seems to depend entirely on the skill of the swabber. Hopefully you will get someone who knows what they are doing.

Porcupineinwaiting · 07/08/2020 21:34

Honestly, you may well puke. I found the nasal swab uncomfortable rather than painful but then I did it myself.

Pootle40 · 07/08/2020 21:39

I honestly thought nothing of it - felt it at the back of my throat for 2 seconds but had no reaction to it at all. Tilt your head back slightly and say 'aaaahhh' while they are doing it. Nose just tickled

randomsabreuse · 07/08/2020 21:41

Not painful but will probably make you gag. I had one in hospital as I had appendicitis so feeling pretty shite. Nose was uncomfortable, tickling my tonsils was uncomfortable...

chemicalsweetness · 07/08/2020 21:42

I had one on Monday, honestly it wasn’t bad at all. I did find my throat was a bit irritated for a while after, but the nose bit wasn’t as bad as I expected even with pregnancy rhinitis!

TrainspottingWelsh · 07/08/2020 21:48

It is about as painful as a needle, i.e not at all. It's uncomfortable, and somewhat unpleasant because we naturally want to pull back from somebody ramming a giant cotton bud up our noses and down our throats, but it doesn't hurt.

yarncakes · 07/08/2020 21:58

It's not painful at all. Slightly uncomfortable but it literally last less than 5 secs.

TheLegendOfZelda · 07/08/2020 22:01

Honestly, with your pregnancy issue, it might make you puke. Sorry.

I don't find it remotely painful or stressful but I always gag a bit

Tanfastic · 07/08/2020 22:01

I did my own. Not painful but I did gag. The nose part I found easier.

KitKatastrophe · 07/08/2020 22:03

Not as bad as a smear test Blush

TrainspottingWelsh · 07/08/2020 22:13

Or indeed giving birth Grin

GeraniumDreams · 07/08/2020 22:17

Not painful at all. The throat one did make me gag, but the whole thing was over so quickly that it really isn’t anything to worry about.

Wankpuffin · 07/08/2020 22:17

Thank you - I feel slightly better about it now. Will make sure I’ve got something in front of me to be sick into just incase!

I have done a test on myself twice now. Neither was painful, but the first time I did gag and sick came up which wasn’t pleasant, but the second time I was more prepared and it was ok. The nose bit didn’t hurt. Maybe a bit uncomfortable but ok. The first time I went I took the dc so they could see what it was like. The second time we all had to have one and they said they were glad they had seen it done first as they weren’t concerned it would hurt as they’d seen me do it previously.

It’s honestly not that bad.
