There is an article which starts on the front page and continues on page 4 . Would love it if someone could cut and paste or photo page 4 continue of the article on here.
I can't access without actually paying up and having to watch the pennies.

No pubs or restaurants for those considered clinically vulnerable.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 02/08/2020 09:53

that is how I read it.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 02/08/2020 09:54

and I doubt those affected would not go to work, if they were still going out to work

LGemployee · 02/08/2020 09:55

@Unescorted

From the Guardian's blog it looks as if govt departments are being asked to scenario model different levels of lockdown and what the impacts will be. One of the scenarios is to reintroduce shielding for over 70's and give "personal assessments" for vulnerable people between age of 50 -70.

Presumably to avoid a more general lockdown for the entire population.

This doesn’t make any sense.

As a group, the over 70s are clinically vulnerable. NOT clinically extremely vulnerable. As a group therefore, the over 70s were never told to shield in the first place.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/08/2020 09:56

DH would most likely have to shield but I'm under 50 so wouldn't. How would that work? I'd still have to go to work and we wouldn't be able to avoid each other living in a one bedroom flat, not that either of us would want to.

Aesopfable · 02/08/2020 09:58

@cologne4711

My mum is 80 without underlying conditions (except being old) and she will not stay at home. I know some people will say "so selfish, taking a ventilator away from someone younger etc" but I take the view that she may not have many years left and wants to get out and enjoy them to some extent. If she did catch it and die she'd prefer that to being cooped up for goodness knows how long.
My parents are like this. I feel mixed about it. Yes it is up to them if they want to take the risk, and absolutely think they should get nhs treatment if they catch something and need it. But on the other hand children are missing out on their education and society is building up huge debts to keep them safe.

@Oblomov20

"Plus everyone with diabetes"

Yeah. I never even got a letter! AngryAngryAngry

You shouldn’t have got a letter for ‘just’ diabetes.
soruff · 02/08/2020 10:01

Fuck This for an idea:
Now I shall have to lock up the husband after his birthday in a couple of weeks.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 02/08/2020 10:04

LG it is a return to the confusion in March when they used 'vulnerable' to describe a big group of people and then used 'clinically extremely vulnerable' for a subset of that group. Eventually 'shielding' became the term everyone understood.

ragged · 02/08/2020 10:08

Why do people decide 1 + 2 = 16? The clearest detail in this story is that there would be some kind of screening, not a blanket categorisation. 1/4 of the work force is age 50+, it's not like they can all stay home and society still function (use your common sense).

Aridane · 02/08/2020 10:24

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 - thank you for linking to the BBC article. I didn’t know BBC did a daily review of the front pages - how helpful!

Unescorted · 02/08/2020 10:32

@LGemployee

I am merely the messenger I have taken no view on the possibility or workability. I also said that they are looking at options according to the blog post. At the time I posted it did not have the detail of the other options so I couldn't post those for you.

It is good practice to look at all options and discard the ones that are unworkable or unpalatable - see my later post with the link to HMT Greenbook Gateway processes.

SerendipityJane · 02/08/2020 10:35

I think two tier society is a dreadful idea.

It is. So why do we already have one ? Try being a woman and seeing how equal you are to men, then report back.

JamieLeeCurtains · 02/08/2020 10:36

@Catthroughthewindow

I’m clinically vulnerable in a marriage I want to leave. If I’m trapped again for an indefinite period of time I will just end myself. What’s the point?
I feel so sad reading this. I'm feeling rather 'trapped' at the moment but for different reasons, and I can't even imagine your situation.

Have you thought about seeking some advice and support on the Relationships board? I'm on there and will look out for you. (And do PM me if you like.) Flowers

Aridane · 02/08/2020 10:39

the over 50's who care for their parents over 70s are going to struggle.
Like they did during lockdown. Somehow we managed to survive that, what’s different about this other than it not affecting the entire population?

@VinylDetective

During lockdown us over 50s cared for our elderly parents under the ‘caring for a vulnerable person’ exemption

Under shielding - unlike lockdown - we would not be able to continue with our caring obligations

Yes, you could continue if you chose. Shielding is guidance/advice if is NOT law.
Aridane · 02/08/2020 10:45

Handy hint: pretty much anything that’s in the Telegraph will also be available in the Mail Online, with some randomly capitalised words.

😂

Aridane · 02/08/2020 10:46

@BamboozledandBefuddled

I prefer to follow the law AND guidance Blush !

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/08/2020 10:47

I suppose it has to be considered, but I really hope that current plans for transmission control do not fail, and there will never be a need to move to something as grotesque as this They're talking about this to prevent a winter peak. There isn't time for current plants to be seen to work.

JamieLeeCurtains · 02/08/2020 10:50

I know what you mean, Serendipity.

Women are the unacknowledged workhorses of the economy. At the age of 50 I was a full-time (35 hours) working single mother, running round after DC age 11 and 13 especially with homework support (one DC has additional needs), helping to look after an ill parent, spending my wages on bills and shopping, consuming, creating, and contributing.

I was much more economically active than my ExH - it's just that he had more money and leisure time so was more 'important'.

Yes. We already live in a two tier society, which is what will make it much easier to driver the wedge deeper. People were able to ignore the signs when everything was good. But now it's not, a lot of people have suddenly realised that "equality" is what men tell women they have.

It's only when you start trying to find your destination, you realise you are lost. We became lost years ago.

JamieLeeCurtains · 02/08/2020 11:01

Indeed, Serendipity. You can see from the comments on threads like this from women in unhappy marriages, buckling under the strain, that they're bloody sick of it. The unfairnesses are being laid bare, exposed as never before.

Maybe we'll all be given Valium to get ourselves through it.

Alex50 · 02/08/2020 11:07

Well if your looking at risk groups, gender is a big one, men between 50 and 70 are far more vulnerable than women

Perfectly put.

It's the media whipping up outrage.

Alex50 · 02/08/2020 11:08

And women have a higher risk of catching Covid than men but 50% less likely to die from it.
