PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the small print of this!
I think a lot of people here are over- reacting and also misunderstanding.
It is NOT a blanket lockdown for anyone 50-70 and it is not even definite it would happen.
It is an option that was discussed and has been leaked to the press.
1 The previous guidance for shielding was guidance. It was not legally enforceable. It was not the same as the rules where there was a fine for breaking the rules and even then they were not 'laws'.
2 The point of this possible new guidance in event of another spike, is that each person between 50-70 would do a risk assessment (and presumably online not through a GP!). So anyone overweight/ obese, or with heart problems, or taking certain drugs etc etc etc, would be asked to manage their risk by avoiding certain situations.
3 None of this could be enforced and no one would be taken to court if they broke the guidance'- it's just not practical or possible.
It comes down to common sense, to manage your own life according to your risks. Sadly a lot of people do not have any.
My mum is in her 90s, very fit and with no health issues that make her vulnerable. She could go out and do all sorts, but she's sensible and isn't and neither has she had friends visit her in her home because they are mixing with other people and possible carriers.
