India - new cases getting really bad

Just looked at worldometer figures for India

No of new cases is 54,865 with 37,403 deaths (+852 today). Number of cases classed as serious is 8,944

Remember that India has a population of 1.4 billion.

Well over half the population of some major city slums already have antibodies

That’s probably not even half the cases or deaths as they won’t be testing the population outside the city.

On another MN thread there was an interesting discussion about how covid is a rich-nation problem because of life expectancy.

If the chances of being seriously ill are related to age, and the average age of those in poor countries is lower, the proportion who become seriously ill is much less.

I guess potentially in wealthy countries you're also more likely to be living with another health condition which, in a poorer country, might have already killed you - so another risk factor that is lower.

I don’t think we know the true extent of Coronvirus deaths in India as a lot of people don’t go hospital and are not tested, so how are we to know the true figure?

This helps explain why it's barely touched most of Africa compared to other continents. Much lower life expectancy or obesity levels.

Like China, I dont trust a word of what India's lying politico's say about the C19 situation.

Its probably far worse than they want to admit.

Coupled with corruption and the majority of the country that still defecates outdoors in wholly unsanitary conditions, India, like all these so called former boom economies like Brazil too, are going to see both infections and deaths rise, purely because their populace is very large.

And there is a stigma 1 to have Covid, 2 you don’t come out of a hospital alive.

They'll survive fine, the population is massive.

Some will survive a lot will die, 800 million poor, they will probably die of starvation before coronvirus

It’s also spreading it, when no one knows who has it.

Every population will 'survive fine' seeing as the IFR is around 0.5 - 1%. It's hardly an extinction level event. There's still going to be an awful amount of human suffering along the way.

Things looking even worse for India today with over 60K new cases today and of those over 8K are serious.

Over 1K deaths today taking their death toll to 44,457K - so so tragic.
