I'm wondering what types of medical conditions prevent people from wearing masks

I'm trying to understand the rationale for not wearing masks. Patients with respiratory conditions routinely wear masks in hospital and it's not a problem so what are the conditions that are prohibiting mask use. After all coronavirus must surely trump them?

@Sallydimebar

I’m afraid it’s everybody’s business as we’re all in this pandemic . You would not believe how far behind my dad is with cancer treatment. I wish we lived in a world where we could all do our bit and work together . I do get the1 % who really can’t wear a mask and have no choice to go in shops and that’s fine but there’s quite a lot who I suspect don’t like it so don’t do it so we just go round and round . It’s not just mask wearing . There’s a load of excuses ready about every restriction they bring in And will have to bring in as obs the mask wearing won’t work . It’s hard no easy answer
It’s not your business to police private individuals claiming an exemption they are lawfully entitled to. I am sorry about your dad. My dad has also missed cancer treatment. Nothing is going to change because the 1% or less of people who are not wearing them and are presumably exempt are forced into wearing masks in breach of equality laws.

The shopping basket police have moved onto mask policing, that’s all it is.

HeIenaDove · 02/08/2020 23:08

No its not your fucking business @Sallydimebar Who the fuck do you think you are?

Did you police the people who were still going on ski trips and cruises?

Sallydimebar · 02/08/2020 23:08

No I wouldn’t DarkMintChocolate but I would with the couple who walked in telling the security guy it’s not mandatory, (oh ok we’re all just wearing them for the fun of it ) or the builder guy who said he’d left it in van but carried on picking his lunch instead of running back to get it . That’s just 2 I’m sure the security Guy could tell u more I can’t see why supermarkets can’t have them at entrance Like tesco . I can’t see from the eye who has medical issues who hasn’t I admit that . As I said anyway the mask thing won’t work I don’t think , well it doesn’t seem to be here in Manchester as cases are rising at a alarming rate so I suppose we Will have some new restriction soon to do .

Sallydimebar · 02/08/2020 23:20

Calm down HeIenaDove I didn’t no ..just the people who are next to me in the supermarket . No point living what was done in the past unfortunately many mistakes were prob made .im talking about now and after that lockdown we all endured to get the spike right down . Would we like to risk another one . Good night to you

HeIenaDove · 02/08/2020 23:25

The government has decided that it's none of your business. Why can't you just follow the rules?

Lots of people's cancer treatment has been delayed and it's awful, but this is not because some people can't wear a face covering.

There is an easy answer and that is for you to mind your own business. Wear your own mask, wash your own hands, keep your own distance and remind yourself as often as necessary that what you 'suspect' is irrelevant.

YewHedge · 02/08/2020 23:44

Out of interest does anyone know why asthma suffers are exempt? How does wearing a mask affect asthma?

LangClegsInSpace · 02/08/2020 23:48

Could I not manage a face covering to nip in shop/ post office whatever or is there no one else who could nip shop / do errands for me and that by the way is not saying everyone who can’t should be locked away they can still have plenty of outdoor space

How magnanimous of you Hmm

Sallydimebar · 02/08/2020 23:49

Oh I do follow the rules thank you , but me on my own isn’t going to stop the spread is it ! I’m not engaging with you on this as pointless ..entitled to voice my opinion And cancer treatment is not going to get going any quicker by people continuing to not follow rules when able to do so .

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 02/08/2020 23:50

@YewHedge try breathing through a straw , then put a face mask over it . See how it goes.

While it doesn't mean ALL people with asthma, it is acknowledged that wearing a mask can cause difficulties breathing, cause an asthma attack, or make one worse.

"People that can't wear a mask" still applies.

LangClegsInSpace · 02/08/2020 23:52

They're not. There are no specific exemptions for any particular health condition or disability.

You are exempt if you can't wear a mask because of a health condition (e.g. asthma), a disability, or because it would cause you severe distress.

If you have asthma and can wear a mask then you are not exempt.

PickAChew · 02/08/2020 23:52

Some people's symptoms are triggered by the warm, damp, rebreathed air. Some simply get panicky because the sensation is like the one they get at the start of an attack.

Clumsyduck · 02/08/2020 23:53

I do feel for people who are genuinely unable to wear one . I forgot mine the other day when paying for petrol I genuinely thought I had put it in my handbag and it wasn’t there but I’d already put the petrol in so no choice but to go and pay . Got a few “looks “
I apologized to the lady on the till and kind of made a point of standing back as far as I could and she just gave me a look Blush
So yeh I imagine for those who can’t wear one and have no “proof” or visible reason why it must be a nightmare going shopping !!

LangClegsInSpace · 02/08/2020 23:58

Well the rules say:

In settings where face coverings are required in England, there are some circumstances, for health, age or equality reasons, where people are not expected to wear face coverings. Please be mindful and respectful of such circumstances, noting that some people are less able to wear face coverings, and that the reasons for this may not be visible to others.

and -

Those who have an age, health or disability reason for not wearing a face covering should not be routinely asked to give any written evidence of this, this includes exemption cards. No person needs to seek advice or request a letter from a medical professional about their reason for not wearing a face covering.

Some people may feel more comfortable showing something that says they do not have to wear a face covering. This could be in the form of an exemption card, badge or even a home-made sign.

This is a personal choice and is not necessary in law.

BigWholeBean · 02/08/2020 23:59

Regarding asthma sufferers. I have Asthma and last week I had a cold. (Tested negative for covid). I ran into a pharmacy to get some tissues, cold meds etc, and the 10 mins of wearing the mask was torturous. I managed to wear it, but I couldn’t have managed for more than 30 mins or so.

Dunno i manage to pop into shops without hearing all this - must live in a nicer area where people are just going about their business without being interrogated
Notfeelinggreattoday · 03/08/2020 01:08

@ ragged well said

DidSheReallySayThat20 · 03/08/2020 01:13

I have ptsd. My ex used to cover my face to suffocate me if I answered back or spoke my mind. As well as other stuff.
A mask freaks me.. I try but often don't succeed. I had to do asda and aldi last week.. In aldi I almost seemed OK with it on. I then went in asda and had to take it off after 3 min. The place stated spinning and I started to freak.. This coupled with it also being a store I rarely go in and is out of routine probably didn't help.
I feel wrong to carry an exception card however dh thinks I should just in case.

I got a lot of stares.. I ended up forgetting half of what I needed.

IAmFleshIAmBone · 03/08/2020 01:41

If you follow the guidelines like everyone is supposed to, then you'll be well aware that it's none of your business why someone can't wear a mask. The attitudes on here are shocking and are making people like me feel even more isolated. If things continue like this I don't think I want to live in this world at all. If masks become mandatory with no exceptions then I will be considering suicide.
