Anyone think masks will need to be worn in school?

As we are going to need to wear masks in more places from 8th August I was thinking about schools.
Does anyone else think they will be compulsory at secondary schools if they go back in September ?
I worry for my DS as he has ASD and other special needs, mask will make it difficult for him to both understand and be understood.

Re facing the front- some kids will like this as there isn't someone annoying you (kicks, pokes, nudges) and hogging stationery like rubber.

MerryMarigold · 31/07/2020 15:57

*Masks seems quite unnecessary when the bubbles are in place.

What data are you basing that on, a funny feeling in your elbow?*

Guess there's no point in bubbles then, is there. May as well all mingle amongst everyone but wearing masks, like in the pub or cinema, or all those essential activities.

Children and young people are not at risk

That’s not really the issue... Children and young people can pass it on to adults. Even if transmission rates are very low for this age group compared to adults (though this would increase up the school) with 8.8m pupils, the sheer number means the potential for cross infection is huge.

Masks seems quite unnecessary when the bubbles are in place.

Secondary schools currently have bubbles in the hundreds and the teachers teach every year so the bubble is really the whole school. That's 2000+ in many schools.

Underhisi · 31/07/2020 16:00

Videos as a teaching method doesn't work for lots of children.

Derbygerbil · 31/07/2020 16:00

And if they do, it won’t be “do it if you want to” as that would be useless, as barely children would... and given wearing masks is all about protecting others, not yourself (and thereby protecting yourself jn the process), those few wearing masks might as well not bother.

Derbygerbil · 31/07/2020 16:02

Heads have been told they will face legal action if they try and implement mask wearing.

I’d be interested to know the basis of the legal action.

Eh?

Bubbles aren't perfect, ok? Doesn't mean they're useless. Got it?

mumsneedwine · 31/07/2020 16:07

Students have asked me if they can wear a mask. I think an awful lot want too.

mumsneedwine · 31/07/2020 16:09

Bubbles are totally useless. As soon as kids go home they mix with siblings or people on transport. It's just lip service so government can claim a hold are COVID safe. Which is a totally lie. Schools will be COVID breeding grounds.

Appuskidu · 31/07/2020 16:09

@Fantasisa

The unions have been calling for it but WITHOUT consulting their members. Heads have been told they will face legal action if they try and implement mask wearing.

Children and young people are not at risk and there has not been a single case globally where a schoolchild has passed it to an adult.

We need to get this in perspective and stop inflicting unnecessary measures on children to appease adults who don't understand basic risk.

This post should be deleted.

It is not based on evidence and such rubbish shouldn’t be allowed to stand.

Piixxiiee · 31/07/2020 16:10

We had a case in our school. Teacher tested positive 2 days later.... they definitely pass it on just like any other germs. Naive to believe otherwise.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 31/07/2020 16:13

My DC are primary aged and I don't think it'll come in for them, however I really stand by school staff being able to wear them or preferably visors. This is coming from the parent of a hearing impaired child too, hence the visor preference. That said, if they do allow it I sincerely hope that attention is paid to the additional muffling they create and some understanding that all children will suffer slightly because of this. Harsh experience has taught me this isn't always the case with hearing impairments at normal times.

littlealexhorne · 31/07/2020 16:15

A high school in Cheshire has already made them compulsory for September, I can see other schools then following this until there's enough support that the government feel comfortable enforcing it.

IveSeenThings · 31/07/2020 16:18

The bubbles are laughable nonsense- 150, 180, 210 children in a bubble? It's ridiculous to think there are any safety measures there whatsoever.
90% of secondary pupils have larger bodies than I do, I doubt their transmission rates are any lower or higher than mine.
I could support no masks for infant school pupils, definitely, but for secondary, I think they should be wearing them.

megletthesecond · 31/07/2020 16:19

Yes. Good.

I'd like my dc's to have a fighting chance of some education this September. They were going to be in masks anyway but the more the merrier.

CallmeAngelina · 31/07/2020 16:25

Yes, and the briefest of glances over any of the myriad of threads about this over the last week will have shown you all the reasons why that is a complete crock of shit and the Times should be ashamed of itself for giving it column inches.

Fantasisa · 31/07/2020 16:26

And for those saying my post contains lies about children not being at risk. They are more likely to be hit by lightening than die of Covid 19. People are not keeping the threat in proportion.

You can disagree with me if you like, but it is harder to disagree with one of Cambridge's top mathematicians:

mumsneedwine · 31/07/2020 16:27

@Fantasisa all been disproved. New report from Chicago today saying under 5s carry massive viral loads up their noses. The virus can not know who it has entered and will leave the same way. It's a virus. They do that.
Out bubbles are 300+ each. And I will be teaching in all of them every day. What could possibly go wrong.

CallmeAngelina · 31/07/2020 16:27

Do you mean "lightning?"
And there are many many other eminent scientists who are saying the opposite.

mumsneedwine · 31/07/2020 16:28

And there is no proof that anyone catches it from anyone else. I'll keep saying it.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 31/07/2020 16:34

I think over 11s should wear them. They are as big as adults and being crammed into an unventilated room with 30 of them is a recipe for disaster. Teachers and pupils should wear them.

I don't see how heads can stop teachers wearing them if the alternative is that they go home.

Fantasisa · 31/07/2020 16:34

@CallmeAngelina Pointing out a spelling error isn't going to convince me that your argument is superior.

I am at least providing links for people to make their own judgements and read the studies/look at the background of the experts quotes in the news stories.

CallmeAngelina · 31/07/2020 16:35

And that link has been provided countless times on here already and de-bunked.
