Should we assume we will all be in masks for the forseeable future?

It occurs to me that the " its safe to remove masks" message won't be coming any time soon.

My0My

Sorry! Should make it clear that Japan is not as polluted as China but wearing masks there is more about traffic fumes.

No it isn’t. Even 30 years ago, when I started visiting, masks were worn as a courtesy to others by people with coughs, colds, bugs they didn’t wish to pass on to others. I haven’t visited for many years now, sadly, but have many Japanese friends. It’s all about courtesy.

@larrygrylls

Pics,

I don’t think anyone is wearing them for the fun of it. However, compared to lockdown, economic collapse and no schooling, masks are a very mild inconvenience.

I fail to see how any of that is inconsistent with ceasing masks when no longer truly necessary.

It's all getting a touch religious.

WouldBeGood · 31/07/2020 20:49

It’s a cult now.

I think it’s to encourage the nervous out.

larrygrylls · 31/07/2020 21:16

Pics,

I think it goes without saying that people will stop wearing masks when it is no longer necessary. Do you think people will continue for fun or as a fashioN accessory?!

No individual measure is a magic bullet (until we can vaccinate) but they all add up and hopefully keep the r number to close to 1 or ideally below.

I am not really sure of your point?

SengaStrawberry · 31/07/2020 21:17

Sadly we’ve had those anyway :( we should have had masks and SD back in February!

Mate, you're arguing my point back at me.
YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 31/07/2020 21:28

I bloody hope not. I hate them. I don’t hate wearing one myself as such but then I’m not in one for hours; I admire those who have to and who do so stoically. I just hate the sight of streets, buses, trains with masked people everywhere. I just think it’s so sad; a terrible visual reminder of the situation and of everything we’ve lost and all the lives lost too.

I hate that I can’t communicate with my deaf DH in one, but that’s just a personal issue.

I wear mine religiously when required; I would never flout the rules. I see why they are needed

But god I hope it’s not forever. I’m probably just a pathetic snowflake but I find the world in masks a very very upsetting one.

People’s facial expressions have never mattered so much to me til now!

Bouledeneige · 31/07/2020 21:55

I'm not confident there will definitely be a vaccine. If ever.

I think we can't afford to be complacent. I was due to be taking my DD back to Manchester to her uni house tomorrow and now thats not going to happen. The infection rates are rising again (and those are only the ones we know about). I think its very likely that there will be further spikes and our freedom will be restricted again.

We are enjoying getting some of our freedom back and its great. But we need to wear masks and keep up the hand washing and hygiene because otherwise we will be going back into complete lockdown again. And more people will die. There's really no point bitching and moaning - all governments have made thousands of decisions but that doesn't mean that how they did it will guarantee that we won't be going back into a more dangerous period. We can forget lockdown and put it behind us - its so easy to forget but it might come back again.

We might not like seeing people wearing masks and not be able to see their smiles. But thats nice to have. Enjoy the outdoors and seeing friends and family whilst we can. But we can't take it for granted. Look at Barcelona.

I honestly don't get the dementor thing. Am I one? i don't know - I'm not panicking or stockpiling but I'm realistic. Is it helpful to be so divisive and judge each other? Not exactly the community spirit we saw at the onset of the lockdown. I'd rather keep the spirit and lose the judgey.

Face masks to be mandatory in Northern Ireland shops and enclosed spaces

Published on Aug 6, 2020
Northern Ireland's First Minister Arlene Foster announced that face coverings would become mandatory in shops and enclosed spaces.
The planned reopening of wet pubs and soft play areas has also been postponed.

anon5000 · 06/08/2020 22:21

I hope not. I know some people love them. Me, I can't wait to not live this new normal' It's fucking shit.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/08/2020 22:51

covid has virtually disappeared in Northern Ireland!

Confirming that face coverings would be mandatory from Monday, First Minister Arlene Foster said: "It's really about trying to give confidence to people who feel vulnerable and maybe have been shielding."

So, nothing to do with science then.

TheMurk · 06/08/2020 22:57

I think (hope) once the deaths have been 0 or low single figures for a few months and new thing/ scandal/ disaster takes the headlines, that people will start not bothering, forgetting them, losing them, just dashing in without one etc and it will become a situation where those who want to wear them do and those who don’t, don’t.

Because frankly that’s how it should be right now.

Hairwizard · 07/08/2020 16:22

Fucking masks.
Will not be wearing one if i can help it. The whole thing has been a complete fucking farce from day 1.
Fucking shit show.

Fuck is my favourite word today. Pre menstrual. Is it too early for wine?

Xenia · 07/08/2020 16:24

Loads of people don't have to wear them in shops, thankfully (and nor do shop workers have to wear them ever)

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 07/08/2020 16:28

Do people think no masks indoor setting with lots of people from different households within splitting distance and recirculating air conditioning with no open window ventilation is a recipe for Covid incubation? Or is it as safe as houses?

IwishIwasyoda · 07/08/2020 16:38

And Nicola Sturgeon has now announced we can't wear only face visors. There goes my big plan for an alternative to the masks that steam up my glasses.

At least she's honest
FrippEnos · 07/08/2020 18:18

@randomer

What is a dementor please?
Don't be fooled by those that tell you that its anything other than a derogatory name penned by a group that got annoyed by other peoples worries.

And yes it has expanded to doom monger and gloomster.

Anyone that uses those terms should be ignored as 99% of the time they want to shut people up.

I really hope not. It makes me feel weird just being a pair of eyes. I like smiling and now that feels pointless.

purpleme12 · 07/08/2020 21:05

I don't even feel comfortable enough in the masks to smile and relax.
I know it's a trivial issue compared to other things but I'm desperate for some tops and shorts but I find it quite stressful shopping now.I didn't before. Not because of covid itself but because of the mask thing.
I was out shopping before and enjoyed a bit of normality now it's a real chore. I don't feel comfortable at all.
I hate it

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 23:02

Or is it as safe as pubs? Corrected for you @ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

HeIenaDove · 07/08/2020 23:08

@FrippEnos i fall somewhere in between. Well i did until i saw the disgusting ableism from the group referred to as dementors.

I havent seen the other group make derogatory comments about ppl with medical conditions who cant wear masks but ive seen plenty of it from the group referred to as dementers. As well as derogatory comments about ppl on disability benefits.

This is what completely alienated me and pushed me more to the other side as it were.

I keep forgetting now as it is not our culture saying that I always keep one in the car , I forget to social distance too not in shops but in the park or something only for a split second eeek
username2020 · 08/08/2020 06:59

I've been up all night crying since learning yesterday that our public sector organisation, under pressure from the union, will require all staff and customers to wear face masks.

I'm profoundly deaf. I need to lip read. I don't use sign language. It's a daily challenge asking people to remove their face mask (allowed under exemption guidelines if someone is deaf) or to write things down.

As my job is customer facing and involves working with multiple departments and out in the community visiting schools, colleges, universities, charities, all sorts of business clients, I just don't see how I can do my job at all and be able to communicate. I also have other disabilities that make social distancing difficult too.

They said they'd look into clear face masks for my team as a reasonable adjustment. Great, except as I said above, it's not just my team I work with! What about the client premises I go to visit? what about even the receptionist in our office building (not our employee). What about the train commute? even visors and perspex screens block sound and phone apps such as live transcribe are not accurate.

I've suggested permanent working from home but no response. I've suggested a change of job role (although could still encounter face masks!)

I want to quit but as a disabled person who would take me? Especially in this current climate? And what if other workplaces are the same?

I can wear a mask. Its other people's masks that cause me problems.

I have no idea what to do now :( :( :(
