Fun things to have on standby for further lockdowns

Just thinking ahead and anticipating that it is quite likely over the autumn/winter that we will face lockdowns either nationally, locally or at a household level if someone has symptoms. I just think it would be good have some fun stuff on standby that we can dig out when we want to have some fun. The children are 6-13 . I'm thinking things like board games etc . We have quite a few strategic type games (Carcassonne, Ticket to ride, Scotland yard etc) but would be good to add in some more fun games or other suggestions (screen free, they do enough of that!) things we could do together (individually, in small groups or as a family)

Sorry that's a bit waffly but am just thinking of ways to be a bit prepared!

we recently got a game called 'herd immunity' which we are really enjoying. It's ages 10 and up, although if you went in a team with the youngest they should be able to join in too.

Exploding kittens, quirkle, Fimo polymer clay, plenty of paper, glue and scissors.

I have an Apocalypse Box in the kitchen cupboard containing flour, pasta, tinned tomatoes, chocolate etc that Must Not Be Touched. But I think it's also a great idea to have fun things waiting in the wings if (when?) we end up stuck indoors again.

frasersmummy · 28/07/2020 19:01

Loo roll.. Sorry couldn't resist

We find uno is great for any age

NeverTwerkNaked · 28/07/2020 19:03

Pay day is great fun, and not too wearing
Christmas and winter crafts
Mulled wine
Fire wood
Download the most incredible films and box sets
Scented candles everywhere
Good warm PJS
Winter boots for kids that fit well, and winter wear generally if we are going out in all weathers.

Jrobhatch29 · 28/07/2020 19:09

Scramble is a big hit in our house,as is playdough. We also get huge rolls of paper and they like to roll it out and do big pictures.
We tried Fortnight monopoly on their request, never again 😂

whostolemy · 28/07/2020 19:17

Current family faves for games in our house (14,12,10) are Sushi Go (we have sushi go party), Throw Throw Burrito, Sussed - these all have the benefit of being pretty quick if you want them to be. For a longer game The Taskmaster Board Game.

Polymer clay and a making cake decoration animals kit from Lakeland.
Best buy of all lockdown has been a hot glue gun! They've created all sorts. Look up Darrell Wakelam for cardboard inspiration!

I've been thinking about this too, my DC are younger though:

For home learning-
playdough
white board
lots of pads of paper
printer ink!

For outdoor walks
good waterproofs for all
insulated rucksack for pic nics

Board games wise my 4 year old can play dominoes and is learning checkers, I think I'll buy snakes and ladders as thats nice and easy.
Also lots of baking supplies and the popcorn that pops in the microwave.

Bluewavescrashing · 28/07/2020 19:45

I've ordered snow boots for all of us, warm coats and gloves so we can have crisp winter walks

Mulled wine is a great idea!

Christmas shopping nearly done

NeverTwerkNaked · 28/07/2020 19:46

Decent outdoor clothing is such a good point. We made sure we went out every day during the first lockdown but that was easy because it was sunny Smile

The younger 3 all love to be active and it will be tough for them if the weather is grim!

We have all been enjoying our outdoor inflatable hot tub. They were like gold dust at the start of lockdown but may be easier to buy now.

wheresmymojo · 29/07/2020 00:03

Making and decorating gingerbread houses

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 29/07/2020 00:13

Uno. Dos. Uno flip. Monopoly deal. Rubiks match. We've played them loads over lockdown.

TheLongRider · 29/07/2020 00:18

Rolls of lining paper work well as drawing paper. I used to get DD to lie down and draw around her and then she would take ages colouring herself in! You get an interesting full length portrait.

Jigsaws, slime crafts and Lego are all popular here. We also bought a cheap games table with table football, table tennis air hockey and other games. It takes up a reasonable amount of space but hours of fun.

Temporaryanonymity · 29/07/2020 00:19

We taught ourselves poker. That’s got to be a life skill.

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2020 00:25

That link is massive so I continue...

It is AWESOME.

the most well designed game I have ever played.

And... AND you have to work together against the game rather than competing against each other. So loads of chatting, conversation, strategy.

And... AND again... It is designed so that it generally takes about 45 mins (not like something where 3 hours later you are thinking WHY??) but the excitement and urgency to beat it ramps up.

We have a zillion boardgames and this is just... Wow.

So buy that Grin

We also always go back to boggle, and the matchy game with the weird hand thing.

The London game from transport museum is a family favourite as well.

RhubarbTea · 29/07/2020 00:25

We like Sushi Go and also Splendor for board games. And a game called New York 1901 which I like but my son is less keen Grin

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2020 00:27

Oh of its a free for all

Outdoors- swingball, basketball or netball hoop. And ball obv.

Modeling balloons are awesome for indoors. Just twist and make whatever. Best thing gets some chocolate! Happy for hours. All ages Grin

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 29/07/2020 00:27

Fab thread !

We love Ticket To Ride and Mapominoes which is great because iv bought 2 extension packs for it .

We have also just bought Dixit , and Uno Flip (which my DD 15 really prefers to Uno ).

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2020 00:28

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 29/07/2020 00:32

@NiceGerbil Pandemic is brilliant.

But honestly we have not wanted to go near it since March .

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2020 00:36

Everyone is different- we all enjoyed the on theme thing.

Up to individuals! It's a great game isn't it!
