PILS are Currently in Spain visiting my SIL. Due to go home day after tomorrow. Flying, so far flight is still in place.
Plan was to come back to the U.K. stay home for 4 days in the U.K. and then get the Eurostar to Paris and then travel out of the city to stay with friends.
They won’t be able to go to France now will they?

I know lots of you will be aghast that they are even contemplating it, but that’s for another day!

no they'll have to self isolate for 14 days before going anywhere else

TheTeenageYears · 26/07/2020 20:45

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-how-to-self-isolate-when-you-travel-to-the-uk/coronavirus-covid-19-how-to-self-isolate-when-you-travel-to-the-uk

It's a bit ambiguous (like most of the rules), if someone were travelling to England from another country and leaving England again within 14 days then they can quarantine for the period they are here until they leave. However, when travelling to France they would have to declare that they have been in Spain in the previous 14 days so i'm not sure if France would let them in now or that Eurostar will let them travel.

Rosieredapples · 26/07/2020 20:49

Is there a chance they could rearrange plans and just travel straight to France from Spain?

negomi90 · 26/07/2020 20:50

They shouldn't be getting on the eurostar in that period.
They need to either skip france or fly from Spain direct to France (depending on France's rules).

Atalune · 26/07/2020 20:55

I think they are worried about

Breaking the rules and incurring a huge fine, but then they don’t know if any fines are in place. They are just fretting.

Losing money (I know I know)

Going to France and getting stuck there. The plan is only for a 5 day stay.

I think they should come home and cut their loses. But I thought I would ask the wisdom of MN.

No they won’t and shouldn’t be going to France.

zafferana · 26/07/2020 20:58

I'd say they (realistically) have two options:

  1. Come back to England cut their losses (if they do that, they aren't going to France five days later), or

  2. Travel straight to France.

Either way, the travel they've booked and paid for from England to France is lost.

Atalune · 26/07/2020 20:58

kitchen. I agree with you. But how is it enforced, do you just be a good citizen and stay home it is your passport marked and border controls know where you have been?

Unless they really must see their friends in France, like life or death reasons, I'd come home to England and stay put.

I think there'd be a strong chance they'd get stuck in France.

itsgettingweird · 26/07/2020 21:10

They can go to France straight from Spain Grin

Well the can today. France have hinted at closing boarders.

TheTeenageYears · 26/07/2020 22:13

We flew back to the UK whilst quarantine was in place from all countries. You complete an online form, print out and show with passport going through immigration in England. We didn't receive a phone call or a visit however I know someone else who had multiple phone calls and two police visits during the 14 day quarantine. The fine for breaking quarantine is £1,000 per person up to a maximum of £3,200.

Almost regardless of what the rules are surely you PIL's must see that going to one European country right now is one thing, particularly to visit a relative abroad but a trip to another country without the incubation period in between is not really the right thing to do. If they catch the virus today and have no symptoms their footprint could span 3 countries and involve goodness only knows how many people.

Atalune · 26/07/2020 22:52

theteengeyears

I agree with you and I have just been chatting with them and they have decided to forgo the French trip. They are very twitchy about getting fined. (Not about spreading the virus!!)

Thanks all for your input.
