Oh bollocks, I'm really nervous about my holiday now!

We're due to head to a French campsite in four weeks (driving all the way). We've cancelled two holidays due to COVID, Malta at Easter and Mellorca now. We decided a couple of weeks ago that we'd try for France as quarantine had lifted and I was able to get comprehensive insurance.
But now I'm really worried about needing to quarantine when we get back!

I know, I know, booking anything now was optimistic and a bit stupid. But we really REALLY want to get away (I'm frontline NHS,I need a bloody holiday). And it's hard to see how rates in France could be worse than what we've got here.

At no point have my workplace says that we shouldn't be booking holidays abroad. So if I do have to quarantine on my return, then I'm hoping they'll either support me to work from home, or I'm happy to take the two weeks unpaid. I'm hoping that because I booked it during the time that there was no quarantine, they can't come down hard on me. But I'm now really worried.
Argh! Confused

@BluebellsGreenbells you aren't allowed out of your car on the Eurotunnel, so it's the safest way to travel!

Have to say I know plenty of front line workers (ICU doctors and nurses), community nurses etc, who have been and are planning on going on holiday- to France in particular.

Disillusioned11 · 26/07/2020 14:00

JellyfishandShells
Gloucestershire- it’s raining here. It rained all day yesterday. We have only had fours days without rain since June 3rd.

is that a new rule? You always used to be. My DC would always "need" to go to the loo on the Chunnel so that they could then say "I've just jumped out of the car when it was moving at 80mph."

GlassHouseYouGlassHouse · 26/07/2020 14:30

We are also camping in France in a few weeks and it sounds like we feel the same way as you about it - getting away for a week is going to be amazing and I can't wait. It is not selfish to take a holiday when national guidance doesn't recommend against it. If anything, you are doing a good thing by supporting the travel industry etc plus stand to gain huge benefits as a family. Think how refreshing a holiday is in a normal year, it's going to be even better this year!
Re: possible quarantine on return. Yes, it could happen, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it did. Another two weeks at home is tolerable after months of being stuck here!

stopitkenneth · 26/07/2020 14:32

@EmmaGrundyForPM yes new social distancing guidelines. Makes complete sense!

@eaglejulesk

Why should she be limited to just the UK?

Um, let me think ..... Oh I know, because we are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic and should all be doing all we can to minimize the risk of catching and transmitting a virus maybe? Also, expecting a workplace to put up with someone returning from a holiday then having to take further time off to quarantine is ridiculous - especially if someone else has to cover their job.

Nah - just 'cos random posters on mumsnet think they have the right to tell others what they can do.

OP the selfish people are those who, having made their own mind up to stay in the UK/at home, think they then have the right to tell others what they should do.

Go and enjoy your holiday. At least as safe there as here. Don't go snogging random males, wash your hands frequently and have a good time.

shortsaint · 26/07/2020 14:43

Oh for heaven's sake, relax and enjoy. We are just on way back from France (ferry) and it has been THE MOST WONDERFUL, relaxing week. I want to stay longer and wish I had booked a fortnight.

The Brits have gone mad. Just stick with mask on inside, and outside if you want to. Oh, and we paid less than half the price of a cottage on the south coast, Brittany ferry included (which is SO well organised and v low capacity).

Ignore the naysayers and relax. You deserve a good break.

BarefootHippieChick · 26/07/2020 14:53

Since the pubs opened on the 4th I see no compliance. It's a free for all

My local paper today has pictures of hordes of 20 somethings all gathered together outside a pub in town last night. All drunk and no social distancing. And my town has seen a spike in cases in the last couple of weeks which has prompted the local authorities to remind people to be vigilant and safe and remember the virus is still around.....

My DSis lives in Gloucestershire and she's had dry weather for weeks, you must have a microclimate specialising in rain where you are. We went there for 3 different days and it was dry!
RunningNinja79 · 26/07/2020 15:18

Hi OP, we're due to drive to France in 4 weeks too, again by Eurostar so as you said probably the most SD way to holiday abroad this year. Though we booked it in December so before Covid. For a while we didn't think it would be possible, but as time went on it looked more and more likely. Now of course, it could go either way.

Obviously there are worse things to happen then losing a holiday, but that doesn't make feelings of upset to be any less valid. So I, too, am looking at the current situation in the rest of Europe with interest.

To all the posters asking why I can't go in this country. One of the reasons why we take our 2 week family holiday to France every year is that the self catering accommodation is owned by family members and therefore free. We can't afford to go anywhere else as we only pay for travel. Plus the weather Grin

AuditAngel · 26/07/2020 15:54

I was supposed to be travelling to Spain on Friday. A quarantine would have been fine as I am wfh. DH can’t wfh so he had reluctantly decided to stay at home. However, now the FCO guidance we cannot go. He wants to stay a5 home, but I’ll take the kids to my sisters,

labyrinthloafer · 26/07/2020 15:57

@AuditAngel do check the insurance before going (if you mean going to your sister's in Spain) as you may not be covered due to FCO advice?

Am I right in thinking you need to have a cabin to go over on the ferry now?
shortsaint · 26/07/2020 16:45

@Sirzy Yes, at least on BF, but it's only about £40 (we'd have got one anyway, just to dump bags and have our own loo) - for a 5 hour journey I think it's not expensive.

If the OP didn't want posters stating opposing views then they shouldn't have started a post on MN. Since when did everyone agree with any poster.

Cherrysherbet · 26/07/2020 21:32

You pay your money and you take your chances.

Simple.

bombaychef · 26/07/2020 22:54

People in areas local to us (city) have broken lockdown all the way through and mask wearing negligible. Vast majority of age 18-30 have ignored it all for weeks. Kids have all been playing out tSeveral friends have been to nearby holiday town where all attractions, piers, shops and arcades etc open as normal.
Loads of people I know worked flat out for last 4 months juggling kids at home too. It's been totally hellish which is why some decide to go away and deem Canary Islands as safe as home.

Scrubsmum · 26/07/2020 23:04

So your frontline NHS and u want to travel oversea for a holiday and not quantine on return. Great idea then u can pass it all around at work!!!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 27/07/2020 01:57

@SwedishEarth What do you think I am inferring? I thought my post was pretty clear.

Bridecilla · 27/07/2020 02:07

We're seriously considering booking a last minute holiday to Turkey.

We would fly, hit the hotel and stay put. If we stay in the UK we'll do several day trips - I'm starting to think that 1 place in Turkey's safer than potentially visiting multiple places here.

It depends where you go really, of course. We are going out to places in the countryside off the beaten track - we had a hill to ourselves yesterday.
Bridecilla · 27/07/2020 02:40

@mccavitythethird We drove up to a beauty spot / walk in Northumberland last week and it was busy too.

SexTrainGlue · 27/07/2020 06:47

Depends what you have in mind for 'multiple', but do count each airport as location, and think about how long you'll be enclosed with strangers on a plane. That's four places. And you will be sharing more indoors space at a hotel and using staffed restaurants catering, even if you decline cleaners entering your room, and there may be high touch places such as lifts.

Don't count likely exposure solely in terms of numbers of excursions.
