Oh bollocks, I'm really nervous about my holiday now!

We're due to head to a French campsite in four weeks (driving all the way). We've cancelled two holidays due to COVID, Malta at Easter and Mellorca now. We decided a couple of weeks ago that we'd try for France as quarantine had lifted and I was able to get comprehensive insurance.
But now I'm really worried about needing to quarantine when we get back!

I know, I know, booking anything now was optimistic and a bit stupid. But we really REALLY want to get away (I'm frontline NHS,I need a bloody holiday). And it's hard to see how rates in France could be worse than what we've got here.

At no point have my workplace says that we shouldn't be booking holidays abroad. So if I do have to quarantine on my return, then I'm hoping they'll either support me to work from home, or I'm happy to take the two weeks unpaid. I'm hoping that because I booked it during the time that there was no quarantine, they can't come down hard on me. But I'm now really worried.
Argh! Confused

You sound selfish.

Take a risk and face it if it happens or cancel.

The quarantine would be there to protect vulnerable people, not soley as an inconvenience to you.

LinemanForTheCounty · 26/07/2020 00:58

I don't understand why we'd quarantine people coming from a country which, while it appears to be having an increase at present, is still way below what's considered a good day here in the UK.

But, it seems that's what we're doing. Just go, OP, and deal with whatever consequence happens as a result of our government fucking things up, yet again.

Inkpaperstars · 26/07/2020 01:01

OP, could you sound out what would happen re work if you had to quarantine? If they say unpaid leave will be doable, then you won't have to be worrying about it before/during your holiday. If not, then at least you'll know what you'll be dealing with.

Times will change now. And hopefully those who feel entitled will get the message.

Who really cares about Spain or any other country now, you should think of yourselves and your family members and stay at home for now.

Some us care a lot about countries besides our own Hmm.

Because it rains in England ..... all of the time ....incessantly. We go on holiday to get week of warmth and sunshine.

I seem to recall several threads on MN recently about how people simply could not cope with the heat! It seems people in the UK are never happy!

Honestly, no-one is suggesting people have to stay at home forever - can't people put up with a bit of inconvenience for the greater good?

stopitkenneth · 26/07/2020 01:14

@Enough4me yes maybe I am selfish. I want to get away from my home town for a while. I don't deny that. I absolutely understand that quarantine isn't there to inconvenience me but to protect others. It's just incredibly frustrating that the likelihood of me catching CV would be higher if I went away in the UK than to a fairly remote place in France. I certainly wouldn't go to Catalonia right now. Or Paris, or the US.

Unless you live in Scotland that is, where a woman is in charge and the rules make sense.

stopitkenneth · 26/07/2020 01:18

@Popc0rn yes I don't really understand the logic of that but I may help to get me back to work if needed.

@stopitkenneth

I guess the logic is that they'd be screwed if say 5 - 10% of NHS staff had to quarantine for 14 days after a holiday abroad, on top of any who have to self isolate because of contact tracing.

Think in our trust the current policy is no need to quarantine, but book a swab test for the day you come back, and can't return to work until you get the (negative) result.

Jux · 26/07/2020 01:38

So you don't much care if you spread the virus to the people in the small town in France that you will be going to for food and entertainment?
You don't much care if all the people sharing air in the service stations you stop at might catch it from you?
You're not bothered that as you return, you might be spreading the virus you picked up in France to all the people you come into contact with on your way through the border or at the service stations?

As a race, we British are showing ourselves to be spoilt, selfish, entitled and uncaring. I am inclined to add 'stupid' to that list, as so many don't seem to understand what quarantine is or what it's for, other than another thing to whinge about.

God, I used to be proud to be British.

LizzieKane2000 · 26/07/2020 02:00

I wouldn't go. I kind of wish borders were shut, so we could all stay a bit safer for a while.

But my sister is going to Bodrum.

It's your decision. Just stay as safe as possible if you really feel the need to go.
And be prepared to know that you might end up in lock down there or quarantine when you come back.

But the decision is yours.

stopitkenneth · 26/07/2020 02:02

@Jux of course I care.
We are driving all the way. We won't be getting out of the car at the border. You're not allowed to get out of your car on the Eurotunnel now at all.

Yes we'll use public loos at service stations on the way. Just as I'd use public loos if I was driving to a holiday destination or for a day trip here. No need to go into service stations as such. French stopping areas are pretty much just a toilet block.

We won't be going to any restaurants or bars etc whilst we are away. We will do probably two appropriately socially distanced supermarket shops during our time away, as we would do if we'd stayed in the UK, and will be cooking all of our food on our camping pitch as we usually do.
Our time will be spent in the outdoors, going for walks in the countryside /along the river etc.

It's probably the least selfish yet still selfish holiday abroad we could do.

I'd be too worried about having to go into lockdown on the campsite.

LizzieKane2000 · 26/07/2020 02:08

Have a great time.
It seems like you've thought it through.
Stop stressing.
Just be as cautious as possible.

If you're going, you're going.

eveningfalls · 26/07/2020 02:20

I just would not do it, no point, everything is on the way up, not worth the risk, hassle and potential legally mandated quarantine; as a frontline worker you should know this, I would be concerned if you don't. Wants, needs and must and all that.

uniglowooljumper · 26/07/2020 03:00
If you're frontline NHS, you're probably exempt from having to quarantine.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules#registered-health-or-care-professionals-travelling-to-the-uk-to-provide-essential-healthcare-including-where-this-is-not-related-to-coronavirus
Which again, means the policy is total bunkum and nothing but posturing from the government.

uniglowooljumper · 26/07/2020 03:02

God, I used to be proud to be British.

And you still were after Brexit? Fucking hell.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/07/2020 04:10

😂😂 yeh exactly. I got French citizenship after Brexit. At least I can be proud of my country again.... Wink

As for driving to / from France, the quarantine only every applied to flights, not other modes of transport. Again iterating why the whole thing was a farce.

DerbyshireGirly · 26/07/2020 04:36

Have a lovely time on holiday OP.

Some people are really getting off on feeling pious and out-coviding everyone else. At first it was "who can lockdown the hardest", now it's feeling all righteous about not going on holiday.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 26/07/2020 04:38

This thread makes me very glad I live somewhere where the border is closed. We are practically covid free too. These two facts are related! Nobody should be travelling unnecessarily at the minute, its ridiculous that people are doing this!

Rachie1973 · 26/07/2020 05:11

Enjoy your holiday OP, if I could get some time off work I’d happily do the same.

Actually being quarantined for 14 days sounds like heaven right now lol

Helloitsmemargaret · 26/07/2020 05:16

Do you get regularly tested at work OP? If so could you be tested as late on as possible and then as soon as you get back? For your own piece of mind as it sounds like the quarantine rules won't apply to you.

I agree key workers need a break this summer - it'll be a difficult winter.

Germolenequeen · 26/07/2020 05:34

But you might take it there with you 🙄
