Oh bollocks, I'm really nervous about my holiday now!

We're due to head to a French campsite in four weeks (driving all the way). We've cancelled two holidays due to COVID, Malta at Easter and Mellorca now. We decided a couple of weeks ago that we'd try for France as quarantine had lifted and I was able to get comprehensive insurance.
But now I'm really worried about needing to quarantine when we get back!

I know, I know, booking anything now was optimistic and a bit stupid. But we really REALLY want to get away (I'm frontline NHS,I need a bloody holiday). And it's hard to see how rates in France could be worse than what we've got here.

At no point have my workplace says that we shouldn't be booking holidays abroad. So if I do have to quarantine on my return, then I'm hoping they'll either support me to work from home, or I'm happy to take the two weeks unpaid. I'm hoping that because I booked it during the time that there was no quarantine, they can't come down hard on me. But I'm now really worried.
Argh! Confused

@madbirdlady22, are you able to point me toward this info.. I've had a google bug everything that is coming up is out of date.

BarefootHippieChick · 27/07/2020 13:15

Apparently they've had a 26% increase in cases since last week.

Pippilsngstrumpfie · 27/07/2020 13:35

Yes, France seems on the brink of another lockdown according to the Prime Minister.

Personally I wouldn't travel too far from home in these uncertain times.

Tootletum · 27/07/2020 13:37

Enjoy yourself. You'll be fine.

Ineedtobecalm · 27/07/2020 13:38

OP , I was due to go Eurocamping first week of August in Southern France, we rolled it to next year. Would suggest you do the same, it sucks I know. I'm sure so many of us need a proper break.

HairyToity · 27/07/2020 13:49

No clue to your predicament. We had a weeks UK holiday last week. Self catering. It never occurred to me to book a foreign holiday. It's a gamble I was not willing to take.

stopitkenneth · 27/07/2020 14:31

@madbirdlady22 can you link to that please? It'd be really helpful. We want to make sure we're keeping up to date and of course we won't go if France is asking tourists to stay away.

Yes, I would appreciate any links about what France are saying too, as I can't see anything specific at the moment?

Squidsister · 27/07/2020 14:45

France currently has same rates as the U.K. - data from 26 July

Squidsister · 27/07/2020 14:47

I haven’t seen anything about the French PM suggesting they are on the brink of lockdown. I would like to read the source of this too please

Chaotic45 · 27/07/2020 15:01

I didn't post the original comment, that was @madbirdlady22. I have found this www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/france-germany-quarantine-list-uk-holiday-uncertainty-a4509091.html, which , depending on how you interpret it suggests there could be further lockdowns.

shortsaint · 27/07/2020 15:03

I've come back to this post out of interest. And yes, I am totally depressed about being back in the U.K. on a dreary day worthy of March, not July.

The ferries are fantastically well organised (only pain is passport control this end - that's bloody Border Control, hey get used to it I suppose post Brexit) and having to wait a bit longer to get on the ferry (extra cleaning being done).

I would honestly repeat our week off in France for the last week of the school holidays (if my OH would allow and I could afford it anyway 🤣).

Brittany was brilliant - not busy, relaxing, people careful, no judging - it at least that I could see. Yes, cases may be going up, but it's still worse over here. I'd head there over the south west ANY DAY.

lljkk · 27/07/2020 15:04

I have a lot of sympathy for OP.

We're trying to figure out some kind of cottage booking within England. So far we can still find properties to rent, thank goodness. We can't fix our dates yet. I'm scared to book more than a few days in advance in case the dreaded test&trace team ring to say we must 14 day quarantine. I just hope somewhere we like is available when we can figure out the dates.

KingFredsTache · 27/07/2020 15:08

I thought France had already ruled out another country wide lockdown a while ago, whatever happens? Obviously it depends where you are in France if they are doing local lockdowns.

shortsaint · 27/07/2020 15:08

The implication is local lockdowns in France are 'possible'. THAT IS THE SAME AS THE U.K.

Take your chance OP. You will be fine.

And if you have to quarantine, so be it. It's only 14 days.

Lavenderblues · 27/07/2020 15:09

French health authorities said at the weekend that the country’s R-rate had risen to 1.3 and new daily infections on Friday had risen to 1,130 - figures last recorded in May, when France was coming out of its two-month confinement.

KingFredsTache · 27/07/2020 15:22

I can't see anything about the French PM asking people to stay away?

Liketoshop · 27/07/2020 17:36

I also work clinically on the NHS and they will not advise any of their employees where to holiday!!! It's not a nanny service! What they have done in our Trust is block any cancellations of summer leave as we'll all be requesting the winter months off, leaving the NHS staff less.... Think about that one folks...Choosing to go abroad is a risky business thus summer and much as I don't want to waste yet another fortnight's leave in September, it's looking that way.....

bondgirl76 · 27/07/2020 17:44

Personally..I wouldent even consider going abroad for at least 6 months. This virus is going to be around for a while..with possibly a furthur outbreak.I dont understand the need to just fly off somewhere..

user1497207191 · 27/07/2020 17:45

Just seen the news that numbers are looking worryingly high in Brittany, so they're talking of local lockdowns there now.

KingFredsTache · 27/07/2020 17:55

@user1497207191 that article is from 10 days ago though, it seems to be quite hard to find up to date info on this!

I have found this from today www.thelocal.fr/20200727/beaches-and-bars-closed-in-brittany-as-covid-19-cases-spike

Seems that the problem is people gathering in large groups in bars and on beaches, like the ski resorts back in March.

Oscarsdaddy · 27/07/2020 18:11

Stay in the UK and support the British economy ..... if you are thinking of going abroad, don’t !

cantdothisnow1 · 27/07/2020 18:14

This is a data of recent/ current infection rates across Europe.

You can easily see from the graphs that Spain is experiencing a spike, The same cannot be said for France who have the equivalent increase in infections to the UK at the moment.

covid19-country-overviews.ecdc.europa.eu/

It is interesting that this data is updated weekly at 6pm and shortly after that the government reintroduced the quarantine with France. I'd be keeping an eye on that data week by week to see what happens.
