How confident are you that you would ‘beat’ coronavirus if you got it?

And if you are not confident...what steps have you taken in the last 4 months to strengthen your immune system?

OP posts:
Kaiserin · 22/07/2020 19:12

Somewhat confident because I think I might have got it earlier in March/April, and I'm still there to tell the tale. But I really wouldn't fancy a second round, as round one was really quite horrid.

I'd be really interested in any new research on how long immunity lasts, and if you get it milder the second time (otherwise... urk)

AccountAntsy · 22/07/2020 19:12

My only risk factor is my BMI which I’m trying to address. I’m 35 and the number of people, particularly women, in my age group who’ve died is very small. There’s not a lot you can do to “boost” your immune system beyond just eating and sleeping well.

Kitcat122 · 22/07/2020 19:17

That's the problem no one knows. Read of people with risk factors sailing through Covid with a few symptoms. I am white, female slim and fit no health issues, never get ill and was and still am 4 months on quite poorly.

VerbenaGirl · 22/07/2020 19:18

I have and I did. 47, overweight but otherwise in good health. I think having a good diet and wellbeing pre-coronavirus helped a lot, as did lots of rest during and after.

MovingtoCardiff · 22/07/2020 19:19

It hasn't even crossed my mind to be honest. So I guess 99.99%

Aliceinwanderland · 22/07/2020 19:22

About 50/50. I got an infection in November (which in hindsight looked very like covid but apparently couldn't beHmm) and I was very sick and a very long recovery.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 22/07/2020 19:22

Even people in their 80s have an 85% chance of survival so all the people convinced they'll definitely die if they get it are quite likely to be wrong, thankfully.

And yet - plenty of people under 80 have died. I'm late 50s, overweight, BAME. I also have a lung condition and a compromised immune system, so forgive me for not wanting to be patronised about my chances of survival.

EllenRipley · 22/07/2020 19:22

It still worries me (I'm pushing 50), but I think the forensic fearmongering is largely to blame for that. My vitamin D levels are good, I take zinc and vitamin C, I exercise regularly, not overweight and no underlying health conditions. I have done a lot of research on supplements that are either antiviral or prevent cytokine storms, and have an emergency stockpile - just in case!

I'm also firmly of the belief that many more people than have been recorded have had it, which would ultimately adjust the mortality rate to something akin to influenza (though I know it's 'not just another flu bug', so I don't say that flippantly).

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/07/2020 19:25

Pretty sure I've already had it, but if not I'm 95% confident it wouldn't affect me too badly, I'm early 40s, fit, Caucasian, a healthy weight, no underlying health conditions, and a good immune system generally.

PinkyBrain · 22/07/2020 19:27

As a young, slim, healthy white female with no medical issues I’d like to think I’m indestructible. But this virus seems to catch the odd person badly doesn’t it. None of us know if we’re going to be that person.

MrsSSG · 22/07/2020 19:34

I'm a healthy, active 39 year old who has had Covid for 4 months. I have been very ill throughout this (many symptoms but mostly heart and neurological problems as well as difficulty breathing and severe fatigue) and I'm still not better.

Doctors don't know for sure if I will ever get better. Many many tests suggest no underlying health problems.

I'm alive, but I'm not living.

This could happen to anyone.

ifonly4 · 22/07/2020 19:35

Other than the fact I'm in my 50s no health factors, low weight, eat fairly healthily and fairly fit. Nervous though as I've had pneumonia twice, felt really poorly with it and took weeks to get over - I never want it again. Before Covid took off, I started exercising more, cycling, hill walking and making sure I have my 5+ a day as well as generally eating better. Also just stepping out for fresh air which I guess is positive as supposedly bit D helps. Very careful with hygiene and distancing.

Yes. A friends 26 year old DD is the only person I know who has had it badly. She’s slim, fit, White, healthy, non smoker with no medical conditions. She’s also been ill for 4 months with all the typical symptoms of long tail Covid.

She’s been off work since March ( teacher ) and doesn't know if she’ll be able to go back full time next term as she’s still exhausted and has Days of pneumonia like symptoms.

Another friends 90 year old granny with Demetia spent a week in hospital with Covid but is home and seems well. Though of course her idea of fit and back to normal will be different from a 26 year Old.

lorisparkle · 22/07/2020 19:51

Pretty confident I would be ok however DH's friend (forties, asthma, over weight) was exceptionally unwell with it early on - air lifted to a specialist hospital miles from home , on life support and is now at home but still unable to do much. DH is very concerned as he is the same age, with asthma and over weight.

sunseekin · 22/07/2020 19:52

@BlessYourCottonSocks

I'm not at all. It's why I'm extremely worried about having to go back into teaching in September with 150 different kids through my (small) classroom every day.

Because of various health issues I feel my chances of surviving Coronavirus are poor. And I don't want to have to risk my life for a job.

Please don’t if you don’t need to. And if you do need to I hope you’re union gives you as much support as possible. I do believe protection for teachers will improve before you go back. It must be so stressful right now.
111999A · 22/07/2020 19:55

I’m mid 50s and overweight, tested positive in April and recovered 2 weeks later, I’ve also tested positive for antibodies. I have been supporting my gut health since Xmas with lots of veg, live yoghurt and as much unpasteurised dairy products as possible. Also trying to improve my sleep. DH also tested positive, is late 50s, overweight with a heart condition and recovered within a week. He is monumentally unstressed, eats healthily and drinks too much.🙄

overwork · 22/07/2020 20:02

No, not worried and expect I would be fine if I did catch it. Haven't been doing anything different, (except following the rules as don't want to put anyone else at risk). Could definitely do with loosing just over a stone though, for many reasons including Covid!

TwilightPeace · 22/07/2020 20:03

Very confident. I’m pretty sure I had it at the start of March, my only symptoms were loss of smell and taste. Felt absolutely fine otherwise.
I’m much healthier now than I was then so think I’d be totally ok.
More worried about passing it onto vulnerable people especially as I work in a care home.

TwilightPeace · 22/07/2020 20:04

I should add I’m 34, white, healthy weight and no medical conditions.

picklemewalnuts · 22/07/2020 21:23

Not confident.
Virally triggered asthma
BMI 40
Fibromyalgia (makes exercise hard)

I'm taking vit D, exercising as best I can, and avoiding people.

SengaStrawberry · 22/07/2020 21:51

I’m morbidly obese which isn’t great and due to suffering from depression linked to losing my job I’ve struggled to sort put my eating albeit I’ve started running and am taking vitamin D.

I think I might be in line for long lasting effects but I think I’d probably survive.

SengaStrawberry · 22/07/2020 21:51

I’m female and in my late 40s

Mum2jenny · 22/07/2020 21:55

Personally I think I’ve already had it, so I don’t care!

bookworm14 · 22/07/2020 21:58

I have had Covid and was fine despite being on two immunosuppressant drugs for Crohn’s at the time. Felt ill for a couple of days and that was it. I didn’t even know it was Covid until I got an antibody test several months later - that’s how mild it was.

Isotope456 · 22/07/2020 22:06

Very confident. Right age group, no underlying health conditions, decent diet and take some extra vitamins. I should probably exercise more than I do but not completely inactive. Statistically I'm at extremely low risk.
