Well you can't get much rarer than 1 which may not have happened.

Beebityboo · 22/07/2020 16:09

@Alex50 I'm concerned for them but I am reassured by the statistics about Covid and children. I am however really concerned about them passing it to me. I have a rare disorder that makes me prone to blood clots and no one seems to know what will happen if I get it. I'm also overweight (but lost loads of it in lockdown).
I'm concerned that the DC's will bring it home from school and I will die, if I'm honest. DH can work from home for the forseeable so that isn't too much of a concern.
I'm also a bit worried about how little we know of the long term impacts of this virus Sad.

AldiAisleofCrap · 22/07/2020 16:11

Before anyone decides to de register their child, do contact your local authority and speak to them.
I have already spoken to my education welfare dept, they said they will not be looking to fine parents who do not send children to school if the child or family member are vulnerable.

I’ve quite enjoyed home schooling but I need to work and I’m self employed so will have had 6 months without any income by then.

APurpleSquirrel · 22/07/2020 16:29

DD (YR) went back in June for 4 weeks & it was great for her & us. She was actually upset about the holidays as she'd only just got used to school again & didn't want it to stop, so yes she will be going back in September.

OpheliasCrayon · 22/07/2020 16:48

How are you all planning to properly home school your children?

You will need to deregister your children and provide them a full curriculum meeting the necessary requirements?

Are you going to keep this up for years if schools are then all full and can't offer you a place?

If you are home schooling because you are worried about the virus does this mean you also won't be letting them socialise with
other children , as I'm assuming they will have been around people So that would be risky? Children do need to socialise

How are you going to ensure this is in the best interests of your children long term?

bigchris · 22/07/2020 16:49

It's one thing to enjoy home schooling when your school is sending home work for pupils but their will stop in september

So my teenagers who've just been doing the work set by school would have none, we both work

Can't wait for them to go back and neither can they

bigchris · 22/07/2020 16:51

Also those opposed to schools are you staying home now , no eating out, home deliveries for shopping etc

How will your kids socialise if you deregister, normal home schooling groups I doubt will be up and running as they won't have the resources to do risk assessments etc like schools have to do

That’s how we are living. But I’ve got a high risk pregnancy so It’s a little different.
myworkingtitle · 22/07/2020 17:03

I’m sending mine in. Hope someone is de registering from the school we are on the waiting list for!

Beebityboo · 22/07/2020 17:03

Yes my family have barely left out house/garden and the local fields since March. I'm not deciding until closer to the time and it's not a decision I'm making lightly either but ultimately nothing is worth our physical health and I'm hoping it would only be for a year.

HerRoyalNotness · 22/07/2020 17:09

Here in Texas we have the option of virtual schooling provided by the school district, led by teachers. so we’ll Be doing that for the first grading period (6 weeks and 9 weeks for primary and junior high) when we can send them back to in person school. We want to see how it goes as the schools are large (1000/2000 kids) and it’s out of control in the community here just now). My oldest saw his friend for an hour yesterday and he was so thrilled, but we need to take it slow. We don’t eat out, dont do unnecessary shopping, we wear masks and have a small bubble of friends we see occasionally outside only.

sunseekin · 22/07/2020 17:29

@Ickabog

There may have been one in Australia but it is incredibly rare.

Scientists are yet to find a single confirmed case of a teacher catching coronavirus from a pupil anywhere in the world, a leading epidemiologist has said.

Surely these 2 statements contradict one another...

How many confirmed cases are there if anyone catching it from anyone? How would the scientist know? Given you could in theory catch it off shopping? Very interested to know.

@OpheliasCrayon

How are you all planning to properly home school your children?

Dh is a qualified teacher ( has since had a career change)

You will need to deregister your children and provide them a full curriculum meeting the necessary requirements?

No I won’t need to deregister, incidentally there are no requirements to provide a full curriculum if you home school simply an education.

Are you going to keep this up for years if schools are then all full and can't offer you a place?

Won’t be necessary see my above comment , I won’t be deregistering.

If you are home schooling because you are worried about the virus does this mean you also won't be letting them socialise with
*other children , as I'm assuming they will have been around people So that would be risky?

Yes

Children do need to socialise they do, thankfully I have 8.

How are you going to ensure this is in the best interests of your children long term?

I am confident my children having a mum who is alive and not a n a ventilator is in their best interests.

duffeldaisy · 22/07/2020 17:38

Undecided here, but I can't cope with the anxiety/uncertainty, so am just going to ignore the situation until it's actually September and we know what's actually happening with the cases.

Our (secondary) school seems very reassuring in terms of preparing for it, but looking at it logically, even with teachers moving around instead of classes, the bubbles are huge (the entire year group), so that's hundreds of people interacting in small classrooms.

If necessary we'll deregister but I really don't want to for the sake of the children's mental health. Saying that, this isn't going to be going on forever - there might be more treatments, or a vaccine on the horizon by then - or it might even have burnt itself out (though that one seems doubtful), so that's why I'm working hard on trying not to think too much before then. I'd have to give up work, I'd be worried about everyone's mental health. I just don't know.

I don't agree with you keeping them off school, but bloody hell, hats off to you having and home schooling 8 children! I am in awe! Good luck! I struggle with 2!

Beebityboo · 22/07/2020 17:42

@AldiAisleofCrap how are you going to have them out of school without deregistering them?

AldiAisleofCrap · 22/07/2020 17:45

@OpheliasCrayon I am shielding , my consultant told me as my dc are too young to social distance from me in our home it’s not safe for them to be in school.

AldiAisleofCrap · 22/07/2020 17:46

@Beebityboo my local education authority will not be fining parents or removing school places if parents or children are vulnerable.

AldiAisleofCrap · 22/07/2020 17:47

Posted too soon, it’s the local education departments who decide who to issue fines too , not central government.

happymummy12345 · 22/07/2020 17:49

My son starts reception so yes definitely. He is back at nursery now. He needed to be there and I'm happy with him being back

Mummyshark2018 · 22/07/2020 17:54

Yes my dc is. They've been in a few days a week over lockdown anyway and I have confidence in the school. Dc school is open full time from September and expecting all children in. If you're not sending in you need to either have a medical note (that must stand up) or deregister. I don't know anyone personally from friends and family not sending in.

PhilCornwall1 · 22/07/2020 17:55

For the people not sending their children back in September, if not then, when will it be safe do you think?

Surely the longer they stay home and away from a proper structured day and mixing with their own age groups, the more it will potentially cause longer term problems for them.

TheDrsDocMartens · 22/07/2020 17:59

My kids school sent home a few things but I’ve pretty much set the work myself. Ex TA and dh is ex Teacher so we know enough (& we’ve friends who are teachers to check ‘modern’ methods 😉).

Dc3&4 are both primary too. Wouldn’t have homeschooled in secondary, although I’m more concerned about secondary plans than primary.

AldiAisleofCrap · 22/07/2020 17:59

I had five children in four years so they have dc their own age to play with. My teens are close and my baby doesn’t need same age playmates.
Why would think our days are not structured?
I will be taking the advice of my consultant as too when it’s safe.
