@oldbagface means a lot, thank you. I'm not sure I've ever been this tired. But then I've only worked on a City trading desk so v easy previous job 😂

catsandlavender · 21/07/2020 21:23

God, my classroom already has a problem with damp, having the windows open when it’s raining surely isn’t going to help much!!

SmileEachDay · 21/07/2020 21:24

Thanks oldbagface.

I’m a good teacher - regularly get decent results and have wonderful relationships with the vast majority of my students - and I’m really proud of how I have conducted myself throughout lockdown. I’m proud of my whole school.

I find the near constant derision and hatred for my profession on here wearing in the extreme.

catsandlavender · 21/07/2020 21:38

@SmileEachDay agreed. There’s always someone having a go at teachers for some reason. It’s like for some reason they think none of us have any feelings/we’re a hive mind who all think the same (apparently terrible) things.

CallmeAngelina · 21/07/2020 21:44

As I'm still waiting for the previous "pay-rise," I will wait and see what happens with this supposed one.

CallmeAngelina · 21/07/2020 21:50

@BigChocFrenzy

"if a child you teach at secondary tests positive staff do not self isolate. Not when there are two either. It’s our responsibility to distance." 🤯
How can this be?!!! That is APPALLING!!!
WhyNotMe40 · 21/07/2020 21:56

I'm not in it for the money either. After 15 years in teaching I'm still not earning anywhere near what I earned in my previous career in finance. Which was a supposedly pressured career, but I can promise you that teaching exhaustion has nothing in any other job I have done - you are literally performing and spinning plates for 5 hours a day, then planning for lots more lessons for hours and marking and data and training and tutor stuff and parent stuff and and and...
I would have already resigned if my husband's job wasn't under threat of redundancy. As soon as we know what's happening with that I will hand it in. And I'm a good teacher in a very good school. They are good to their staff. But this is too much, and the relentless undermining of my skills and professionalism and training and education is just so demoralising.
I've had my bit of "making a difference" and giving back. I'm going to go back to career that makes money and put my family first.

Not all nurses are getting 4%, the pay rise was targeted at raising the salaries of the lower bands. Some are getting 1.7%. for higher bands, this won't reflect in a increase in money as the pension contributions were increased at the same time, most people were worse off.

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2020 22:05

Same as for teaching then. New entrants do the best. Someone in their second year could be paid less than an NQT.

SmileEachDay · 21/07/2020 22:06

Pom

Yep. Exactly the same scam that’s being pulled on teachers.

ClimbDad · 21/07/2020 22:07

This is a very good breakdown of the pattern we see with respiratory viruses every year. Children are the drivers of all respiratory viruses. This is what awaits us every September, but this year Covid19 is being thrown into the mix.

It’s in the guidelines Angelina.

😳

Pomegranatepompom · 21/07/2020 22:13

It's disgraceful, most people at the end of the 3 years had a maximum increase of £1000 to their overall salary (but increased pension).
Not just nurses btw - many HCP on this pay scale.

I don't work in ITU - they really deserve a bonus. It was so bad, a priest stayed for every shift ...

oldbagface · 21/07/2020 22:14

With you on this @ClimbDad. I intend to deregister. No other option is there?

It's gutting but my families health comes first.

I'm not so worried about the first week or so but come October/November I can see there being exponential growth again.

Yep. Exactly the same scam that’s being pulled on teachers.

This whole thing is a scam.
If and when covid numbers go up, it can be laid almost entirely at the feet of teachers and schools.
The cry will be 'if only they had followed the guidance'
Its a way of not only breaking the unions but also teachers.

motherrunner · 22/07/2020 06:25

Just got to hope:

  1. Community rates stay low
  2. Parents keep their children at home when displaying symptoms
  3. Pupils will practice good hygiene
  4. Buildings are cleaned properly

I can ‘wash my hands’ a thousand times a day (not sure how anyway, with all the extra duties I’m doing) but everything else is out of my control.

Our lives are literally in the hands of others.

Ickabog · 22/07/2020 06:53

A depressing thought, but it's true.

cansu · 22/07/2020 06:58

Given that schools are reopening, what is the thread for?

labyrinthloafer · 22/07/2020 07:08

@cansu presumably to talk about schools reopening?

motherrunner · 22/07/2020 07:13

@cansu Why discuss any topic?

SmileEachDay · 22/07/2020 07:55

Given that schools are reopening, what is the thread for?

Have you read the research paper on the opening thread? Do that, then read the thread. Then come back and tell us what you’ve found out.

I hope every single teacher isolates him/herself at the first sneeze.

Pomegranatepompom · 22/07/2020 08:42

I don’t think they’re any suggestion that teachers won’t ....

WhyNotMe40 · 22/07/2020 08:56

I think there will be the usual martyrdom from some teachers, and pressure from SLT not to isolate, and the usual internal guilt about letting the students down, and of course there's the usual thing that because you have to set and mark all the work while you are off anyway, it's actually easier to go in...

Exactly this. The government is pressuring individuals to carry the burden using a combination of misinformation, financial inducement and emotional blackmail.

The exponential spread of the virus in schools will force the government into yet another U-turn. Schools will have to close. Thousands more lives will be lost and students and teachers will have been put at risk for nothing.

This thread was started to talk about whether there are better ways of doing things, or whether more protection can be used if schools are reopened with normal class sizes. The consequences of the government’s policy are obvious to anyone who knows anything about this virus. I’d rather not be looking back in six months wishing people had listened. I’d rather avert the impending mistake.
