Schools Reopening?

A major, peer reviewed study into transmission in South Korea has established that tweens and teenagers spread the SARSCOV2 virus more than any other age group.

The study involved more than 65,000 people and used South Korea’s exceptionally effective contact tracing system to look at who brought the virus into households. Tweens and teenagers were the highest index case age group. Younger children transmitted at the same rate as 20-somethings.

This is a large scale, rigorous piece of research that proves children are effective at transmitting the virus. It was conducted in a country that implements strict social distancing and mask wearing among children. The authors say the rate of transmission would have been higher if children weren’t subjected to those measures.

Plans to reopen schools more or less as normal in September will place many lives at risk, and increase the likelihood schools will have to close again. The government needs to acknowledge schools will be highly efficient vectors of viral transmission and change its reopening plans.

If the government are to make this mandatory they need to do it now to give parents a chance to stock up and to identify children/families who may not be able to afford them

I think they will wait to see if people wear masks in shops before deciding whether or not to implement masks in schools. Otherwise it will seem silly that school children are wearing them when adults in shops aren't.

Mistressiggi · 19/07/2020 16:15

Nah Penny a normal decent wash will do and I personally use a steam iron on them as well. I don't boil my hands either.

mumsneedwine · 19/07/2020 16:15

@motherrunner with you on that 😂. Get through a lot of Tena lady. Maybe I could give them to kids as masks 🤣

netflixismysidehustle · 19/07/2020 16:16

Since shops have said that they don't want to enforce it and police say that shops should enforce it. I am predicting higher mask wearing than now but not significant numbers.
This isn't a jibe at those who can't wear them btw.

motherrunner · 19/07/2020 16:16

@openplankitchen

A 20 minute rest break is a standard allowance across many sectors. I'm now curious how long teachers normally expect!

Plus as NHS staff have been working 12-24 shifts throughout. It's a big much to complain about a 20 minute rest break

@openplankitchen I won’t get into an argument about how my day won’t end at 4pm. Before 8am I would’ve already put in a few hours as I set my alarm for 4.30 for PPA.

I’m concerned about having one scheduled toilet break. I’m a menopausal woman. I will flood in front of students if I can’t change regularly.

mumsneedwine · 19/07/2020 16:17

@openplankitchen you seem to be ignoring our question of what job you do that's back to normal. I'm just interested.

Feenie · 19/07/2020 16:17

I was introduced to a Facebook group called Usforthem England on one of these threads - absolute fruit loops. They want kids back with no special arrangements at all - read a post today by someone who insisted that the social distancing her dc experienced at an end of year school picnic was emotional abuse! My jaw regularly hits the floor reading the posts. Totally bonkers.

SmileEachDay · 19/07/2020 16:18

openplankitchen

It’s not even about the 20mins. It’s about not being able to go to the toilet at all during the rest of the time.

But you know that- you’re goading for fun I think. Carry on. I’ve met lots of Y10s like you.

What was your job again?

Letseatgrandma · 19/07/2020 16:19

It’s not having a ‘break’ from working that I need, it’s being able to go to the toilet. I am prone to kidney infections which are usually agony, involve antibiotics and, if bad, time off work.

If I am having to seriously limit the amount of water I drink, because I know I can’t go to the loo for hours, it is going to lead to me becoming ill, needing time off work and a class of children not having their teacher. That seems unnecessarily harsh on both me and them.

Before someone suggests my TA takes the class whilst I go to the loo-I don’t have one.

openplankitchen · 19/07/2020 16:19

@motherrunner teachers who have a medical issue for increased breaks such as incontinence will obviously have an individual risk assessment with their line manager. Same as any other industry

mumsneedwine · 19/07/2020 16:22

@SmileEachDay my year 10s have been much more reasoned with their thinking 😊. Some have made masks just so I feel more comfortable - one did come in a gimp mask but I appreciated the effort 🤪. And I gave him one of my blue ones. Weird how the kids get it better than some adults. If cavities are covered the virus can't get in or out if then.

netflixismysidehustle · 19/07/2020 16:22

When I have my period I can't go 4 hours without changing my towel/tampon. I suspect that teachers will be the same too Wink

Pebble21uk · 19/07/2020 16:23

openplankitchen I love that you are an expert on teaching and educational settings, yet too embarrassed to even tell us what work you do. Funny that.

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2020 16:24

It's not a rest break. It's lunch. It is utterly disingenuous to claim that many many professionals don't get more that that. I think a huge problem here is a lack of appreciation of teachers as professionals, or an acknowledgement of the intensity - mental and physical - of our roles, even when on a so called break!

And surely children should be experiencing more play and social time than that?

mumsneedwine · 19/07/2020 16:25

@openplankitchen @motherrunner 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂a risk assessment. Not much anyone can do if I need the loo 10 minutes into a lesson.

openplankitchen · 19/07/2020 16:25

It would be interesting to hear from shiftworkers in factories etc. Who would not be able to take unscheduled breaks. I wonder how they manage.

Mistressiggi · 19/07/2020 16:25

No, in any other industry you'd just be allowed to go to the fucking toilet.
Honestly you are goading away and probably polishing your wee medal as it is working, you do upset people as we all want to be treated as human beings not bloody robots. So 👏👏 to you

SmileEachDay · 19/07/2020 16:26

@mumsneedwine

As I typed it I immediately felt guilty because my Y10s are lush and would probably offer to look after my classes for me if I needed a wee. 😂😂

mumsneedwine · 19/07/2020 16:26

@netflixismysidehustle nope we are the same. I used jumbo pads or pads and tampax together. But have been known to leak.

Mistressiggi · 19/07/2020 16:26

I worked in a factory. No bother going for toilet breaks. Where do you work again?

openplankitchen · 19/07/2020 16:26

@mumsneedwine when I was at school children weren't allowed to go to toilet during class. And I can't remember teachers just upping and leaving the class unsupervised 10 minutes into a lesson.

I guess things are different now?

netflixismysidehustle · 19/07/2020 16:27

Totally derailing the thread - what happens when a surgeon needs the loo and they are in the middle of an operation?

mumsneedwine · 19/07/2020 16:27

@openplankitchen please tell us your job as we are all interested. I mean you're an expert at knowing about ours.

netflixismysidehustle · 19/07/2020 16:28

Openplan- there are children with medical reasons for needing a toilet as quickly as possible. My son had a "toilet pass " which is showed if he had to rush to the loo mid class.

mumsneedwine · 19/07/2020 16:29

@netflixismysidehustle my DD who is a medical student says they have a 2 minute break. The difference being they are not leaving the patient unattended as there are lots of other qualified people in the room. Unfortunately I'm usually alone with 30 kids who I can not leave alone.
