If you are WFH and NOT putting on weight, how?

DH and I have put on over a stone during lockdown.

We used to cycle or walk to work so at least an hour exercise each day. Now we just roll downstairs and sit at the kitchen table for 9 hours staring at zoom.

Eating and drinking in the evening is one of our only pleasures really!

I’m not sure how to reverse the weight gain pattern?! How are other people doing this? Help!

Not eating out, not drinking so much, not getting snacks while working in an office have all contributed I think. Get shopping delivered and don't buy lots of snacks etc.
I do want to eat more out of boredom but there's less opportunity.

time4anothername · 15/07/2020 13:06

I started wfh for much of my work long before covid and put on a lot of weight which I have not lost but I have stopped gaining. I have dumbells by the pc to lift weights between calls, I have a timer to remind me to get up and walk every hour, I do short interval walks around the block at break times. I try to eat more earlier and have other things to look forward to in the evening.

yeOldeTrout · 15/07/2020 13:07

We make an effort to get out for exercise 1-2+ hours every day. I like long walks & cycle rides. This is leisure for us. I have teenagers who like to go out at stupid times... one was asking for a walk at 9:45pm last night (I said no to that, funny enough, but sometimes I would say yes).

Will be very happy when swim pool reopens, mind.

HoneyBee03 · 15/07/2020 13:08

I've been eating less working from home so I've lost a tiny bit of weight. When I'm in the office I'll have breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack. Sometimes pop out to get a treat. While at home I forget to eat, usually just having a slice of toast and a bag of crisps to keep me going until dinnertime.

I'm definitely drinking more though, and I drive to and from work usually. If I was used to walking or cycling to the office I think I'd be seeing a difference. Can you take a morning or lunchtime walk/cycle? Might be a nice way to break up your day.

PurpleDaisies · 15/07/2020 13:10

Not eating cake in the break room, no lunches out, very few take aways and I’m out walking a lot.

Cannibal · 15/07/2020 13:10

I have lost 4lb in lockdown. The main reason is that we stopped getting takeaways and are doing more home cooking. I am not doing any more exercise, if any at all. Saving loads of money too. Makes you realise how much money we wasted.

HorsesDogsNails · 15/07/2020 13:10

Mainly by eating the same as I did when I was in the office! I took a packed lunch every day so I make that same lunch to eat at home and I don't snack.

My steps have dropped significantly as I walk to and from public transport to get to the office but I've maintained my exercise (I run 3 times per week and walk the dog every day).

Mynameisrow · 15/07/2020 13:11

I’m not snacking during the day. I’m keeping to set meals the same time each day like I do when in the office. I’m also trying to get out for a walk over lunch or after work.
Haven’t put on any weight and thought I would as I’ve stopped cycling to work.

AriettyHomily · 15/07/2020 13:12

I put on 9lb in the beginning which has come off again but I've turned into a blancmange.

Parker231 · 15/07/2020 13:13

Have maintained usual amount of exercise although there have been more runs than previously but have been having PT session outside in the garden.

Hippofrog · 15/07/2020 13:14

I only eat between 4-8pm usually after 5. I find fasting is the only thing that helps me. I’m also so much more alert.

Witchofzog · 15/07/2020 13:14

Doing a 20 to 30 min hiit session halfway through the day. Also I see this as the perfect opportunity to eat a healthier low or no carb lunch - my favourite being Mexican scrambled eggs with no bread or 1 small slice. I also follow the 16:8 diet and don't eat til 2pm

twilightcafe · 15/07/2020 13:20

I think I've slipped back into intermittent fasting. I'm not hungry first thing in the morning, so I don't eat breakfast. I have a small snack for lunch, then a proper tea.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 15/07/2020 13:21

I'm 2 stone down since mid-March. My routine has been:

  • Doing Slimming World Online;
  • No tempting/junk food in the house apart from some treats for my husband which I asked him to put in a small plastic safe that we got from Amazon. I don't know the code;
  • 10,000 steps per day minimum. I'm not commuting but have swapped for regular walks and 5km runs 2-3 times per week (I could only run about a mile when this started);
  • Not really going out to the shops/pubs much;
  • Breastfeeding my toddler burns a few extra calories.

I think that's it. I still have a little over a stone to lose before I'm back at a healthy BMI, but I reckon I'll get there in the autumn.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 15/07/2020 13:22

5:2 to maintain and two walks a day including getting up early to do so.
When the kids finally get back to school that will help and I might be able to go to 6:1 again as that's a fair walk

MillieChant · 15/07/2020 13:23

I've lost weight. No snacking is the main thing, plus no takeout or eating out. I try and go for a run once a day. I've lost half a stone.

MarshaBradyo · 15/07/2020 13:25

Wfh a few hours but lots of home schooling too.

Low carb and running, lower alcohol levels than start of pandemic.

Realised since this was the long haul needed to get my mind right or I’d stack it on.

SophieB100 · 15/07/2020 13:26

I eat exactly the same as I did pre lockdown.
I walk every day, for at least an hour.
I quit alcohol at the start of lockdown, and that has certainly helped me stay at the same weight.

PatchworkElmer · 15/07/2020 13:27

I’ve been doing more exercise than normal to try and counteract it

WorraLiberty · 15/07/2020 13:29

You can still walk or cycle for an hour, surely OP?

And eat how you normally would have before lockdown?

ChanklyBore · 15/07/2020 13:32

I’ve always worked from home, including whilst looking after babies and toddlers at the same time. In many ways you have to be more disciplined, not less. Proper exercise for 30 mins three times a week minimum. 10k steps a day absolute minimum. 15k better. Above 20k as often as possible. Get out and about at every opportunity. Build in breaks, and move.

I don’t do diets, though, I like food, and wine, so I have lots of it, thankfully I also quite like exercise so I try to have a lot of that too.

pinkgin85 · 15/07/2020 13:36

I've been slowly losing my postpartum weight gain during lockdown by watching calories and doing low carb but it's been super super difficult. Being at home all the time makes me want to eat!

actiongirl1978 · 15/07/2020 13:41

I've lost 7lbs when I got a grip on myself at about week 10.

I had been exercising too but eating too much.

I exercise at 6 every morning, a hiit and then 3 mile dog walk, back in time to sort children onto zoom at 8am.

Every evening I walk the dog with dh, 3 miles again.

Haven't had an alcoholic drink for 7 weeks.

BigBadVoodooHat · 15/07/2020 13:43

I’m not sure how to reverse the weight gain pattern?! How are other people doing this? Help!

But you do know how to reverse the weight gain - you say it in your OP: you’re moving a lot less, and eating and drinking more, so you’ve put on weight.

You know that you need to reverse the moving less/eating more pattern in order to reverse the weight gain. It’s boring, admittedly, but unfortunately there’s no easy or ‘secret‘ solution.

toomanypillows · 15/07/2020 13:44

Couch to 5k in the mornings, or an hour on my exercise bike, and then a long dog walk in the evenings.
Keeping under 1200 calories a day by working in my office and only coming out for lunch etc at set times. 😊
