If you are WFH and NOT putting on weight, how?

DH and I have put on over a stone during lockdown.

We used to cycle or walk to work so at least an hour exercise each day. Now we just roll downstairs and sit at the kitchen table for 9 hours staring at zoom.

Eating and drinking in the evening is one of our only pleasures really!

I’m not sure how to reverse the weight gain pattern?! How are other people doing this? Help!

Half a stone gone since the start of lockdown. Ive continued with slimming world (lost a total of four stone so far), and made an effort to go cycling 1-2 times a week after work or at weekends. Its been a struggle, and ive gone up and down, but overall i am pleased as i usually turn to food for comfort.

I haven't lost weight ( I am very overweight ) but I haven't gained any either . For me that is a massive positive .

I have stayed the same weight by

1 doing some exercise ( 30 min YouTube and/or 45-60 mom walk almost every day). Doesn't sound much but I did absolutely nothing before. Now I have more time I seem to be able to fit it in ( still don't like it though). I always said I didn't have enough time to exercise regularly. Turns out I was right GrinGrin

2 I weight myself most days with a set amount I allow myself to hover between

. If I go over a set weight by even a lb on more than 1 occasion in that week, I have a really careful 1-2 days after that which seems to work to get me back.to my set point

I have some very bad days ( I binge and eat compusivlely though less often than I used to) but the weighing keeps me accountable.. I do need to lose weight but I could EASILY have put on masses of weight over lockdown but haven't .

In fact I have been working on keeping my weight stable for about 15 months now and have been very successful. I can't remember the last period of a year or more when I was not significantly heavier or lighter at the end than the beginning of the period . I usually have a 12-24 month cycle of dieting and putting on weight again. I am really hopeful I have broken that . We shall see.

Calorie deficit!

I lost weight last year and didn’t want to put it back on, so have been careful with food, had v little alcohol (for mental health reasons) and prioritised exercise.

Reythemamajedi · 15/07/2020 13:52

I've lost half a stone, instead of commuting I now exercise daily and I eat better at home, there's time to prepare a healthy lunch rather than grabbing something from the sandwich shop.
I have developed a chronic biscuit habit at 3pm every day though Shock

Chaosreigns123 · 15/07/2020 13:58

I drove to work anyway before so I'm not missing out on the exercise in that respect.

I'm watching what I eat, breakfast, lunch, dinner and no snacks most days. There's been no eating out, although I've had a fair few takeaways but even a lot of those were closed at the start.

As there's been less going out there's been no grabbing a McDonald's or a cake on the way home.

I'm actually trying to lose some weight, but at least I've not put any on during lockdown.

I could quite easily have stuffed my face with chocolate during this time, but I lost over a stone last year and I'm pretty determined it's staying off.

SingingSands · 15/07/2020 14:00

I try to get out for a walk after work, or a run/cycle. Also doing some home exercise after joining up online for classes. I'm not working out every day but I'm trying to mindfully fit in some activity. Even hoovering and cleaning gets my step count up.

I've cut down on my drinking though, as this always makes me pile on the weight!

Wexone · 15/07/2020 14:02

I am eating way less now am WFH. Am getting up later as no commute, eating less for breakfast, no sausage sandwiches tempting me in the canteen at breakfast. Also less for lunch, making do what's in the fridge instead of the choice in the canteen. I don't buy too much sweets or biscuits so don't have it in the house to eat (Helps himself is allergic to certain foods too) so don't have that temptation. Not having any of the birthday cake, cupcakes or sweets that would be in the office most days either. Am at home so cooking a more healthier dinner instead of the rush in the door at 7pm to get what ever I can in the oven for dinner, no take aways too. No trips to the local café with the girls from the office (which I miss) Using my commute in the eve to get out for a walk or some form of exercise so to be honest am actually the healthiest and best weight have been in a long time. Don't want to go back to the office at all apart to see the women

annabel85 · 15/07/2020 14:04

I replace my commute with exercise. I left the house an hour before my shift and now I spend for that hour exercising (normally cycle) and the same on the way back (I usually go for a walk at the end of shift). I normally use lunch hour to run any errands.

theneverendinglaundry · 15/07/2020 14:06

I am a sahm but am doing less exercise because I don't have my school runs anymore.

Snacking and booze are the main culprits for me. It's so hard not to eat and drink because life is so BORING right now!

applecatchers36 · 15/07/2020 14:07

Am the same not lost or gained weight. Have been working at local hospital throughout and cycle to and from work. We probably have had same amount of takeaway.s but stopped eating out. Been doing zoom yoga class and running after our small children which helps 🧘🏽‍♀️🚴🏃

P0lka · 15/07/2020 14:08

I gained a lot of weight (lik, a lot more than you!) but have now lost it.

I moved my desk from the dining room to an upstairs bedroom - it's now a lot harder to graze!

I do at least an hours exercise per day; usually walk for an hour in my lunch break, then cycle after work a couple of times a week.

And finally I plan my meals in advance, sticking to lower calorie options (e.g. 50% spaghetti, 50% courgetti; or 50% mince, 50% diced mushrooms)

applecatchers36 · 15/07/2020 14:09

Sorry that was confusing am doing some WFH when not on a rota to go into work...

P0lka · 15/07/2020 14:09

I also traded wine/cider for gin & diet lemonade - that makes a big difference if you're drinking most days

Fandanglethat · 15/07/2020 14:10

Far fewer snacks than when in the office (we have a dedicated snack table there!). Home cooked lunches rather than pies and shop bought sandwiches and I'm also getting out for a walk more often and I'm doing HIIT 5 times a week because my commute is reduced so I have the time. I've lost a stone.

megletthesecond · 15/07/2020 14:11

Walk round the block before work, 1 mile.
20 min walk at lunch.
Long walk / 5k run in the evening.
Two or three yoga / HIIT classes in the garden.

The walls are very very boring now.

loulouljh · 15/07/2020 14:13

Exercise and no snacking!

BakedBeeeen · 15/07/2020 14:14

I have stayed the same weight since lockdown started, which has been a monumental effort!! Includes not buying snacks, not eating any of the kids leftover food, trying to do exercise 4 times a week (sometimes just a 20min HIIT session in the kitchen).
Doing exercise helps because I am then less likely to sabotage weight-loss efforts by overeating!

Notcrackersyet · 15/07/2020 14:18

I’ve kept my weight steady...
No snacking during the day
Pretty healthy lunch
Too much wine and pre-dinner snacks in the evening though, which I try balance by exercising 3-4 times per week.

Mintjulia · 15/07/2020 14:20

I’m home with ds (12) so two 5k runs a week, an hour’s zoom karate class and three or four 10 mile bike rides.

It’s very hilly round here. I’ve never done so much exercise. Grin

Candyflosscookie · 15/07/2020 14:21

No eating out, less socialising. No Saturday cake run or Sunday heavy brunches out. Have barely had an alcoholic drink in lockdown as we just don't buy wine for at home. More walking. Have lost about half a stone since March I think although I don't weigh often. Trousers feel looser.

CeibaTree · 15/07/2020 14:33

I only eat carbs once per day, and vaguely stick to e 16:8 way of eating. I have personally found I have more time to exercise now I'm not spending 3 hours a day commuting, so completed couch to 5k a couple of months ago and try and run 3 times a week. I also do yoga everyday - something I never had time for, and this has really helped with my equilibrium so I find I am not really comfort eating anymore :)

BusySittingDown · 15/07/2020 14:33

I used to go to the gym prior to lockdown but since it has been closed I do a workout from YouTube everyday.

I do it first thing in the morning then it's done and then I shower and get straight to work.
Every day at around 4pm I'll go for a walk, either with the family or on my own.

Most people who I know have put weight on have been drinking more alcohol. I've stuck to only drinking at weekends.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2020 14:37

Lockdown happened shortly after I retired,
so I'll never again have my daily cycle round trip of 16 km

I used the extra time for more gym classes (I'm in Germany) or Youtube routines before they were open,
plus daily walks along the Rhine

I stopped snacking several years ago, so not much temptation to eat more

I maintain healthy BMI on a relaxed 5:2

Gogogadgetarms · 15/07/2020 14:48

SAHM here with the same problem, have my children all day by myself.
I put them to bed by 7.30 and then do exercise for an hour after.
Yes it eats into my evening. Yes I’m tired while I’m doing it. But I’m not eating and I’m moving.
Oh and i’m still putting weight in despite doing this 4 nights a week.

doodleygirl · 15/07/2020 14:54

My gym went online as soon as lockdown happened. I tend to do 2 classes a day, one weight based first thing and a cardio based class in the evening. I am also doing some running and walking the dog.

I work standing up at the breakfast bar, I have a stand up desk at the office which means I am not used to sitting down all day.

We dont buy many treats with the online shop and when baking we use maple syrup rather than sugar.
