Asking too much of teachers?

DomDoesWotHeWants · 11/07/2020 10:29

It's looking like masks are going to be a requirement in shops and possibly other indoor venues.

Yet teachers are expected to teach - for hours at a time - in confined, poorly ventilated spaces, with no social distancing. They have been told they do not need PPE. If I was still teaching there is no way I'd go into a room crowded with teenagers and not wear a mask at the moment.

Teachers should be allowed as much protection as possible not thrown under a corona bus because Johnson wants them for child care so their parents can go back to work.

I really can't understand why it's going to be compulsory in shops where meetings are fleeting but not in schools which are crowded and have people crammed in for hours.

Does the right of children to go back to school over rule the rights of of school staff (teaching and ancillary) to be as protected as possible?

This means they should be allowed to wear PPE, if they choose, and secondary children should be wearing masks as happens in some other countries. In some countries younger children also have to wear masks in school.

The safety of teachers has been ignored by Johnson and his chums in their urge to get people back to work and the cry of "back to normal" is taken up by those ignorant of the facts about the virus.

Teachers have been made out to be the bad guys almost from the beginning - as can be seen from many bile infested threads on here. They deserve better.

Perhaps you could give us a heads-up as to where your uncle's restaurant is, rainbow.

Hercwasonaroll · 13/07/2020 14:18

Owning the restaurant is clearly different to being employed as a chef. It's in your interest to do the cleaning and not have to pay anyone else!

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/07/2020 14:20

@CallmeAngelina

See even that reply was unnecessarily bitchy.

He’s a very hard working 74 year old who is trying to stay afloat, working in a kitchen which was 41 degrees the other week during the heat wave.

He’s very kind hearted so I am sure he would welcome your business

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2020 14:20

over your comment on noble is completely uncalled for. She is very very well known on staffroom for going above and beyond for teachers (and parents) in helping them and offering advice.

She is being pragmatic.

Angelina is a passionate and determined teacher who wants to protect the profession : a profession increasingly demeaned, derided and under attack, as you really ought to know, and acknowledge.

What we are doing is eroding and diminishing the teaching profession by brining in a load of recruits (potentially and apparently) who will be trained up to be canaries in a mine and never know what workload and expectations should be and never complain again. Every government minister's wet dream, that.

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2020 14:22

Out of curiosity, how long have you been teaching over? And what is you role? You say you work across MATs... how much classroom contact do you have?

peasaregood · 13/07/2020 14:23

I've been on many food hygiene courses and can honestly say the issue of whether you can cook and also clean toilets has never been mentioned.
Are people saying that if eg. you own a small cafe and cook the food yourself then you're not allowed to clean the loos?
Because that just isn't true

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/07/2020 14:25

10 years, teach a full timetable across the 3 schools, maybe slightly less than a teacher based in one school, as we get a bit of travel time!! Second in department.

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2020 14:26

Also, meant to say, if chefs are cleaning toilets, I call on my rights to phone environmental health.

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2020 14:27

It is definitely true. All SORTS of rules about toilet cleaning. If you handle the food, you should not clean a toilet. I am not saying it isn't done. BUT EH would not be pleased.

It's usually waiting staff, not chefs.

peasaregood · 13/07/2020 14:28

but waiting staff handle food?

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2020 14:30

As usual this thread started off fairly reasonable and descended.

I find it a bit sad that the most vocal and the most critical of teachers are fellow teachers.

Non teachers I can cope with but the just crack on , you are being a drama queen and aggressive blah blah stuff is destructive sneering and is everything that is wrong with leadership in schools these days.

Staff wellbeing, workload, and self worth are at an all time low in schools, and were before Covid.

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2020 14:30

Yes, they do peas, as I said when the rules are flouted it is not usually the chef!

peasaregood · 13/07/2020 14:32

I've had quite a good look and can't see any legislation saying chefs can't clean loos.
To those who have this info from courses they have been on could you point me to a link please

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/07/2020 14:35

I can’t see the issue, chef finishes service, cleans their kitchen, gets out his/her whites, cleans the loos, goes home, probably has a shower as smells of food!

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/07/2020 14:35

I cook and clean my loos on the same day

SimonJT · 13/07/2020 14:37

In that case do chefs have to prove they have a cleaner who cleans their toilet at home? Because you know a chef couldn’t possibly wash his/her hands.
GhostTypeEevee · 13/07/2020 14:38

@OverTheRainbow88

I take it you also cook in your normal day to day clothes unlike chefs. What is done at home isn't really comparable

GhostTypeEevee · 13/07/2020 14:42

@SimonJT Can't say my dh has a habit of cleaning our toilet while wearing his chef whites or does it prior to leaving for work

The risk factors for cleaning toilets is not only fecal matter but also chemicals and cross contamination

canigooutyet · 13/07/2020 14:45

If your uncle who owns the place is cleaning it might because of this guidance. He has certain responsibilities when it comes to protecting his employees. This is aimed at his profession but they all have them. There are similar for schools etc.

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2020 14:45

Turns out that it’s not true that everyone is now cleaning toilets in their workplace.

Some who are cleaning are simply being asked to clean it after they used it which is fine.

So the toilets only get cleaned at the end of a shift?
OverTheRainbow88 · 13/07/2020 14:57

Next time I speak to him, I will him to clarify the cleaning procedure.

Hopefully by sept, the cases will be much lower, if non existent, and we will all feel safe going back to work.

TheHoneyBadger · 13/07/2020 15:05

How vile this thread turned.

Reality is it’s a very few posters being deliberately obtuse and clearly vitriolic towards teachers (and will fully ignorant of recruitment and retention crisis). It’s just that they post so prolifically and provocatively that they seem like the majority.

Do not feed the dickheads.

GPs cleaning toilets? Hilarious

CallmeAngelina · 13/07/2020 15:09

Some who are cleaning are simply being asked to clean it after they used it which is fine.
But some of those people also think it's fine that, because they clean up after themselves, it should be OK for teachers/TAs to clean up after hundreds of children; you know, pitching in and "doing our bit."

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2020 15:12

Toilet thread is trending. Still a minority cleaning toilets.

A GP surgery says they’ve increased their cleaner’s hours and hired extra.

Anyone want to retract their assertion that everyone’s cleaning toilets so teachers should too?
