Asking too much of teachers?

DomDoesWotHeWants · 11/07/2020 10:29

It's looking like masks are going to be a requirement in shops and possibly other indoor venues.

Yet teachers are expected to teach - for hours at a time - in confined, poorly ventilated spaces, with no social distancing. They have been told they do not need PPE. If I was still teaching there is no way I'd go into a room crowded with teenagers and not wear a mask at the moment.

Teachers should be allowed as much protection as possible not thrown under a corona bus because Johnson wants them for child care so their parents can go back to work.

I really can't understand why it's going to be compulsory in shops where meetings are fleeting but not in schools which are crowded and have people crammed in for hours.

Does the right of children to go back to school over rule the rights of of school staff (teaching and ancillary) to be as protected as possible?

This means they should be allowed to wear PPE, if they choose, and secondary children should be wearing masks as happens in some other countries. In some countries younger children also have to wear masks in school.

The safety of teachers has been ignored by Johnson and his chums in their urge to get people back to work and the cry of "back to normal" is taken up by those ignorant of the facts about the virus.

Teachers have been made out to be the bad guys almost from the beginning - as can be seen from many bile infested threads on here. They deserve better.

I will NOT clean toilets

I carry my own anti-bac wipes and clean the staff loo before and after using it though
Confused

CallmeAngelina · 13/07/2020 13:44

don't you normally clean the kitchen area as you go along?

The larger the staff, the less likely that is to happen.
We have a very small kitchen, and many people using it in a brief time-frame (10-15 minute break). There simply is not time (nor inclination, to be honest, from many) to clean up effectively. The staff member whose "job" it is, has been off since Covid began, so it's been a bit ad-hoc since then. Random people load/unload the dishwashers but more often than not there are mugs and glasses left out all over the place.

Hercwasonaroll · 13/07/2020 13:44

I don't know of anyone else who is expected to clean beyond a wipe down of a desk/phone.

Many friends in many sectors. Where are chefs cleaning toilets? Or is that BS.

You are selectively picking text. It was very clear that I was talking about toilets used by hundreds of children who pee (and worse) all over the seat more often than not. That is a different thing from cleaning a loo (used by comparatively few) for my own use.
CallmeAngelina · 13/07/2020 13:47

Where are chefs cleaning toilets? Or is that BS.

Got to hope so. I'm not sure I'd fancy eating a meal by a chef who'd also been cleaning the loos.

GhostTypeEevee · 13/07/2020 13:48

Have people said that chefs are cleaning toilets as I thought that's it's not allowed or is it being used as an example because they're not, to prove a point?

Not that I think teachers should have to be cleaning toilets

I know that accountants and chefs are.

GhostTypeEevee · 13/07/2020 13:49

"for goodness sake onion"
"I know that accountants and chefs are."

peasaregood · 13/07/2020 13:52

yes, they are; but I'm sure you'll pile on and say BS because then that looks bad on staff who won't do this, doesn't it?

pooiepooie25 · 13/07/2020 13:52

@openplankitchen

If you believe what's posted on mumsnet you'd think teachers think they have the scariest job in the country!
Not once have we said that so stop making up shit and read what teachers are asking for.
CarlottaValdez · 13/07/2020 13:52

Our CFO is definitely an accountant and his office is next to mine. I’ll keep an eye out to see if he walks past my door with his marigolds in.

CallmeAngelina · 13/07/2020 13:54

Marigolds?! We DREAM of those in schools! Grin

canigooutyet · 13/07/2020 13:54

So if you’re off today then why aren’t you enjoying your day off instead of doing school reports?

Anyway.

How do people expect school staff to properly clean the toilet?
Spray a bit of anti bac on some tissue and wipe round?
Spray the toilet brush?
Or worse spray and reuse the same cloth for all the bathroom?

In your office you might have loo cleaner near the loo, mop and bucket and various cleaning stuff easily at hand.

Cannot do that in schools. At most they are allowed a spray and depending on the cohort spray cannot be left unlocked in bathrooms, classrooms or anywhere really.

Early years, nursery and even through most of primary it’s a given we clean up during the day. Just there’s others around including students, although there’s something about spraying near pupils, and water is preferred to clean tables after art etc. At least that’s how my school worked and it wasn’t because of budget. When we had to spray we had to move pupils out of the way.

But like I said I’m no longer working and not fully up to date.

And we cannot forget that not all schools run their 16+ provision as FE. They are considered schools. My schools age was 11-19/20 all in the same building.

If Ppe doesn’t change who does this help?
Yea the risk to youngsters is less, but this assumes all youngsters are healthy to begin with.

They need shields and extra money. They need support from us because they are a part of our kids life’s.

And when I think about teachers wearing masks it reminds me of the news reporter wearing one on camera, sounding more like Donald Duck 🤣 it would be very difficult for anyone to not laugh 🤣

DomDoesWotHeWants · 13/07/2020 13:54

Making things up to try to prove a rather pathetic point just makes people look daft.

@CallmeAngelina- except this particular thread on MN isn't reality. GOD HELP US OF IT WHERE!! (No school for our children, no jobs and everyone dead from covid-19 by Christmas (except for the rich, powerful and privileged, oh and Tory voters of course!) 😂😂😂

peasaregood · 13/07/2020 13:56

carlotta
If he's a half decent boss and others are pitching in with extra cleaning then I would hope he would too

GhostTypeEevee · 13/07/2020 13:56

DH is a chef and isn't allowed to clean toilets regardless of whatever bug is going around. I think the reasoning behind that is rather obvious

CallmeAngelina · 13/07/2020 13:57

Very true, Ylvamoon. Grin

canigooutyet · 13/07/2020 14:03

Some of the chefs I know work in restaurants that are away from customer toilets. Even staff toilets if seperate from customers are away from the kitchen area. Busy service chef is lucky to take a piss never mind rub upstairs and clean toilets. After service erm I’d rather they clean up the kitchens.

Thank fuck these places get those visits for hygiene.

canigooutyet · 13/07/2020 14:10

Yes yes I know. We cannot all afford cleaners at home.

At home at least you can give the job to the person who left the pebble dashed toilet (assuming able). Cannot do that in a school or restaurant - or maybe this is the way forward. Detentions for leaving skids in toilets. Get them taught whilst still young 🤣

Oh imagine that. The shame. If kids can do it then why carnt some of these very professional very busy important people do it we often read about 😂

Appuskidu · 13/07/2020 14:11

I know 4 accountants-none are cleaning toilets!

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/07/2020 14:12

I think these times are unprecedented.

So my uncle owns a restaurant, he works as one of the chefs, always has. Has never cleaned the toilets, however at the moment they are barely breaking even, so most the staff have been kept on furlough. So he is now cleaning the toilets, which in 30 years of ownership he hasn’t done before. It’s just trying to get though these super tough times

Hercwasonaroll · 13/07/2020 14:15

I thought from my last food safety training that chefs couldn't clean toilets either.....

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2020 14:16

But if you OWN it and it is your business ,t hat is different. It's the roll your sleeves up and set an example as the boss. I do not expect to see executive heads of many secondary schools rising to that, if I am honest.

It's also a common given in the catering trade to clean stuff.
But I wouldn't be expecting to see a chef cleaning a toilet, for obvious reasons.
