How long do people suspect they will be needed / kept mandatory?

Plus if I'm always in a mask my need to dress nice and buy makeup os less so less need for non essentials

Yes Billy
Sleepingpup is SO gutted the deaths are going down that she’s actively promoting steps to help the death rate.. wait, what? Continue to go down?

Surely that can’t make sense even in your own head?

bettsbattenburg · 11/07/2020 02:43

They are now considering it. As Scotland have made them mandatory in shops England won't be far behind.

I'll save a fortune if they do as there is no way I will wear one, I'll just stop going in the shop to buy my work lunch instead of making it.

NeverFit · 11/07/2020 03:58

Those refusing to wear a mask, should look to the US to see the increasing spread of the virus, because people don't want to be told what to do.

Also like a lot of things you need to try various types of masks to find the one that suits you best. I have various types. I want to use the washable cloth ones more often, but find them difficult to breathe in at times due to having asthma. So I've gone back to the surgical type ones. Even then the sizing of them can vary. I've now found one that fits better so it's not too tight in front of mouth but a snug fit elsewhere. Proper use of the nose band helps to stop spectacles fogging up and makes the masks fit better. No nose peeking out or touching my face or the front of the mask. when I have it on.

I'm classed as vulnerable, so others wearing masks helps to reduce my risk of severe illness. So why wouldn't I want to reduce the risks to shopworkers, transport workers and others who don't have a choice of not working or venturing out for supplies?

Discobar · 11/07/2020 04:04

I just don't get it. Took my 4 year old to local shopping centre today in South London/Kent. Only ones wearing a mask. Don't give a feck what anyone thought.

But, if this lowers transmission in anyway why wouldn't you? Why wouldn't you want to protect your family?Just make them mandatory.

Those refusing after spending 4 months in lockdown need to have a serious word with themselves.

missmouse101 · 11/07/2020 04:18

I'm happy to wear one and I'd be glad if they become mandatory. Anything to suppress the virus and help reduce transmission.

sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 07:44

Lol well aren't you a righteous little soldier. Who on earth are you going to tell what to do when this is over. Bet you are gutted the DEATHS are going down really.

@billybogeye Oh give it a rest. 🙄 You sound a twat.

Firef1y72 · 11/07/2020 08:06

If they became mandatory, I'd wear one for as long as I could (because I stick to the rules) and I'd wear a hidden disability lanyard, so hopefully no-one would get arsey with me if I had to take it off.

But I'm autistic, I struggle enough to know whether someone is joking or being serious with being able to see from their mouth whether they are smiling. I'm guessing I'm going to be totally floundering if I can't see their mouth. Not that I always get it right trying to decipher emotions with seeing the mouth, but I really can't tell from eyes/tone of voice.

labyrinthloafer · 11/07/2020 08:14

@Miserablemoan

They just give me the heebie jeebies. I’m sorry. I know this is my issue and it’s probably selfish but I won’t go shopping if they are made mandatory. I don’t go much now. I don’t even think I could see my friends if we all had to wear one. I don’t know what it is-I don’t mind the feel of wearing one-I wear one at work. Maybe some weird self conscious vanity thing on my part and just don’t like seeing other people in them because it’s strange? Maybe I’ll get used to it Sad
I think this very honest and presumably sums up many people's problem with masks, leaving aside the people who really can't wear them for physical or mental health reasons.

I think we'll get used to them, if we need to.

Fieldofgreycorn · 11/07/2020 08:17

Awful control, how dare they.

Don’t know if you’re being sarcastic but life is full of controls. Like wearing a seatbelt or not drink driving.

I thought they were so widely worn in Japan, China etc because people were trying to protect themselves from pollution.

Most wear simple surgical masks they won’t filter pollution. It’s part of the culture - it’s seen as polite to protect others from colds and flu that you might have.

vanillandhoney · 11/07/2020 08:32

If they become mandatory indoors I'll just be avoiding shops and doing all my shopping online again like during lockdown.

I can't wear a mask due to autism and the huge lack of understanding - both on here and on other forms of social media, means I wouldn't feel comfortable going out in public without one dealing with being "told off" like a naughty child.

The attitudes on here are awful - "just get on with it" "suck it up" "you're not special, just fucking wear one" are all examples of comments I've heard recently. The total lack of understanding is sadly not surprising - people pretend to be all inclusive and understanding but they're not, really.

I think the retail and hospitality sectors will suffer massively if this happens. My old colleagues in retail have already said it's a disaster and that jobs will go/stores will shut by the end of the year.

I think this attitude is mainly across social media where people can shout loudest. Wear a fucking mask has replaced Stay the fuck at Home which again was something that only really happened online - in real life most people are just getting on with it without accosting strangers for perceived digressions.
MyPersona · 11/07/2020 08:46

@Armi

Just wear a fucking mask. There’s no need to make a massive bloody political and ideological screeching opera out of it - put a fucking mask (or scarf, bandanna whatever) on for the relatively few minutes you are in an enclosed space with other people to reduce the chance that they will become desperately ill. Stop bleating about yourself and your precious foibles and the outrages being committed against you because you have been asked to cover part of your face for a short period of time and think about other people. Just bloody do it.

Christ alive, you people piss me off.

RJnomore1 · 11/07/2020 08:48

Ok I don’t have a mental health issue; I’m probably one of the most robust and resilient people I know. But I cannot stand anything over my face; it makes me get panicky and stressed. I’ve always been like this, cent even where a scarf up over my face without stressing out. It’s horrible.

I’m certain coverings help with spread if used properly. But most folk won’t use properly and many think wearing one makes them invincible. It’s a way of the government trying to make people feel safe to go out and attempt to boost people’s ability to get out but I think this thread shows it’s backfired for many of us.

I also wear glasses about 80% of the time and there seems to be a sight issue with that!

So I won’t be out shopping unless I’m completely forced to. I’ll try to be compliant but my way of doing that will be withdrawing a little bit more from life. In the grand scale of things it’s not an issue, I’ll shop on line, but it makes me sad.

jewel1968 · 11/07/2020 08:52

For those of you that can't wear a mask would a shield be better for you? In this article one US expert thinks they are better than masks

triblive.com/local/regional/for-those-who-dont-want-to-mask-up-try-a-face-shield/

I know some think masks are better and both is ideal but if you really can't wear a mask ..... Not sure if wearing one meets the requirement in Scotland?

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 11/07/2020 09:00

My God, the drama over wearing a bloody mask.

The science supporting them is stacking up. Lockdown worked so numbers of covid+ are low. Wouldn't it be a good idea to keep it that way?

Do those fighting this not believe in covid? Or not believe in masks?

I realise they're not the most comfortable things. But if healthcare staff, including myself, can wear them for 13 hours straight at work you can manage 30 mins in a shop. And yes, the way people handle their masks is less then ideal but still better than nothing.

CountFosco · 11/07/2020 09:09

But if healthcare staff, including myself, can wear them for 13 hours straight at work you can manage 30 mins in a shop.

As a healthcare worker you are wearing a medical grade mask that we know reduces transmission and you are in close contact with vulnerable patients for sustained periods of time. The evidence for the effectiveness of cotton masks from Etsy is, at best, mixed. The evidence for airborne transmission in shops when you are not in close contact with another person for any length of time is weak. The cost benefit ratio is completely different.

MaudesMum · 11/07/2020 09:10

Once they become mandatory we'll all have to wear them in situations where they're not actually necessary - not all of us live in places where shops are crowded or where we need to queue to get into supermarkets. I live in a not very crowded town and chose to shop in our many small independent shops, and I can honestly say I've not been within 2 metres of anyone for more than a couple of minutes whilst shopping at any point over the last couple of months. So, any mask I wear (if I have to) will purely be performative.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 11/07/2020 09:11

You have a lot of faith in the masks we are wearing count fosco Grin. They are just big standard paper surgical masks.

Limpshade · 11/07/2020 09:20

Seriously, there is no one who actually "likes" wearing a mask; unless you are medically exempt, just wear one! "Not really liking it" is not a reason.

I live in SE and my 2yo who attends preschool has to wear one the entire tome she is there. She sure doesn't like it either, but she manages, because that's the rule. If a toddler can do I am sure most adults can.

Limpshade · 11/07/2020 09:21

SE Asia, that should have read!

wow.

People much older than that are having tantrums about it here.

MereDintofPandiculation · 11/07/2020 09:33

I thought it was cultural that IF you were poorly/sneezy/snotty you wore a mask. How the hell do you manage a mask if you're snotty? If you're not wearing a mask, you grab a tissue and get it to your nose in time to catch the snot, then throw it away. You can't do that with a mask. So do you wear the mask with added snot, or do you leave home with a carrier bag full of masks so you can change mask every time you sneeze?

I know that answer at the moment is you don't leave home if you're snotty, but given our attitudes in the past to people who take sick leave :just for a little but of cold", I can't see staying at home whilr
snotty persisting for very long.
