Can I ask how everyone's holidays in UK tourist areas are going so far?

Anyone away this week? How are you finding things? I guess not many families have gone yet.

We are away in Dorset and having a fantastic time! We have pretty much stuck to the beach but everything open and functioning as normal to be honest. People in the pubs and restaurants (we haven't been but only because we have small DC!)

WentworthPrison · 08/07/2020 21:09

My home town in heaving and full of people who don't seem to understand road signs, leave farm gates open, leave litter etc.

ScrapThatThen · 08/07/2020 21:21

Glad you are having a nice time Sunshine. We are going later in the summer and will be mostly hill or coast path walking. Sorry some visitors are not being respectful for those of you living in these areas.

We're camping in North Devon this week. Most places are open or about to open but there is a weird vibe, in that no one seems quite sure how zealous they're supposed to be, directing human traffic, waiting 5 mins to wipe down tables etc.

I keep reminding myself that when it comes to pubs and cafes this is literally their first week of opening so mostly they're doing really well. It just all feels a little bit sad (in the true sense of the word, weather probably hasn't helped either) compared to how a normal holiday would feel.

I do think though that in a couple of weeks we will all be more used to it and things will feel more back to normal again. At least I hope so. Confused

We are staying in the Lake District until tomorrow. The campsite is full but not too crowded as very big.We have no problem socially distancing as we are in a lodge. The village is welcoming tourists and everyone is following the rules in pubs and cafes.

Sadly plenty of litter even in less touristy places, I wish people were more respectful of environment.

tobee · 08/07/2020 22:02

People who live in tourist places, are visitors behaving worse than usual?

JMG1234 · 08/07/2020 22:04

We're in a self-catering flat in Cornwall by the beach. We've had a lovely week, beaches pretty empty and nice to have a change of scene. We've been respectful of social distancing but had one meal in a restaurant in St Ives that felt like a real treat.

justanotherneighinparadise · 08/07/2020 22:04

We’re in Hunstanton. The only thing that’s made it crap is the weather unfortunately.

HateIsNotGood · 08/07/2020 22:25

As a North Devon resident I agree with Prawns sense of things and there does seem there's a little bit of a "sad vibe" going on.

But I do think that, as prawn describes, it's down a lot to the 'grey weather' and businesses just opening up this week.

However, this is what a lot of North Devon looks like on Grey Days - a bit run down and grim - thankfully not most of the time as rundown looks less grim when you have an ever-changing bright sky above you.

Also, there's a tension because parts of N Devon have the lowest CV19 infections in E&W (eg Torridge) but yet we want to welcome Visitors. I feel that we now expect to be infected, so there's a wariness, and a 'lockdown mentality' which contradicts our desire to also want to welcome visitors. Which we do.

We're off to Northumberland tomorrow so will let you know

Whenwillthisbeover · 08/07/2020 22:43

We are in the lakes and it’s great. Most places open, can get a table in most places as long as we book, pubs and cafes hit and miss but mostly hit as it’s still quiet. Every place except the Indian restaurant we went to tonight took details for track and trace, even the village pubs.

Hand gel at every doorway including all shops and most staff in face masks.

The walks and scenery were as always outstanding, no need to distance and it all felt fairly normal.

Later on in the season perhaps not. We’ve had a great week, thank you Cumbria for looking after your county and your visitors.

isthiswalter · 08/07/2020 22:44

We are in north Devon and it's great. Locals have all been friendly, pubs not overcrowded, having a lovely time.

HateIsNotGood · 08/07/2020 23:49

That's good to hear water - long may it continue - I pass a newly opened local pub on my way and hear happy sounds coming from it.

Glad you're having a lovely time.

@DayB1Day

Seaside towns near us are heaving with stabbings, litter and antisocial behaviour. Avoiding them all and sticking to out hidden secret beaches.
Do you live in Compton?

I live close to the lake district and there have been problems over the last month with litter and people parking where they shouldn't. 'Tourists' have got the blame but I think it is relatively local people who don't usually visit but have done so because there is not much else to do that have caused most of the problems. We drove through Coniston on Sunday and it was quiet for the time of year but cafes and shops were opening up.

I love near a touristy area and we know the big influx of tourists isn't back yet but still having major problems with litter etc.

It seems to be mostly very bored and definitely local young teens at fault. There is a real antisocial behaviour problem brewing in my opinion.

We are currently in Herefordshire. It’s very quiet, we are the only people at the glamping place we’re staying at. Weather hasn’t been great, but it’s been quiet when we’re out and about.

SapphosRock · 09/07/2020 07:29

Yes. Brighton beach has been disgraceful, full of litter and broken glass in the mornings. I'm pleased the weather has got worse to be honest.
