Can I ask how everyone's holidays in UK tourist areas are going so far?

Anyone away this week? How are you finding things? I guess not many families have gone yet.

I have a relative in Cornwall who shared a video of cars and caravans arriving saying "here comes the second wave" the next day she was posting that she's lost her job in the hospitality industry and was looking for another. Couldn't connect the dots!
We are going to the Yorkshire coast today our kids are so excited as the holiday park has a playground open!

I live near a local attraction and on sunny evenings it is heaving with young people at the moment, like a festival. On rainy or even just grey days they stay indoors! Am I the only one who doesn't really mind it though? I feel sorry for young people, many of them have lost quite a lot in this (not getting to finish school, not going to uni etc). I am pretty sure I would have been joining them if I were younger. And on the bright side, more young people than ever are probably experiencing nature!

I have friends who live near other beauty spots who have been raging about the tourists (who probably came from less than 20 miles away). They don't seem to understand that they own their property but not the whole area. Or that they are the tourists elsewhere. Or that tourists pay the wages of a lot of people in a small town.

But yes, for the most part I haven't hardly seen any adults acting irresponsibly, it is the young people who I imagine will be fairly local.

Bumping because it's getting closer to our holiday dates.

(And I live near Bath and there has been police in attendance at a 3000 person rave since 5am and we can still hear the bass at 9.15 am Shock )

Yep, we are away to Cornwall in August, as usual. I’m a very respectful visitor!

All my usual restaurants are booked.

However I have a friend who has been trying to book accommodation there and shes found nothing at all. I’m confused whether that’s because it’s completely booked up (most likely scenario) or because some aren’t opening?

I thought it would be heaving in Cornwall already. That’s why I’m confused. We have a long journey and we can’t check in until much later than usual, so I’m trying to work out if there will be more traffic or less.

kungfupannda · 19/07/2020 09:19

You live near me then! We woke up to the bass. Is it in the event field on the Priston road by any chance?

kungfupannda · 19/07/2020 09:24

Sorry, meant to tag @ScrapThatThen in that

ScrapThatThen · 19/07/2020 09:32

Yep @kungfupannda it's at Swainswick or St Catherine. There's some videos on Twitter. My local community page is combusting Grin

Just looked on twitter and it seems to be right over the other side of Bath. Not sure how we can hear it so loudly.

kungfupannda · 19/07/2020 09:32

Cross posted!

kungfupannda · 19/07/2020 09:33

I’m wondering if we’ve got a smaller one over this side as we can still hear it pretty clearly.

ScrapThatThen · 19/07/2020 09:40

Stopped now maybe? Oh was it just a lull.. hope you have a peaceful day!

OP posts:
kungfupannda · 19/07/2020 09:44

I think it stopped in the last half hour or so. Just went out to check as kids have TV on so couldn’t hear.

Cornishandnotaprick · 19/07/2020 09:44

I have never seen so many caravans on the A30! It’s quite spectacular really.

As far as I can tell everyone is happy & busy at beaches. And more people are exploring the countryside which is brilliant- shows that people are choosing to holiday and social distance. I’ve received smiles from lots of people on holiday and it’s a really lovely vibe at the moment.

We’re going away next weekend to the Cotswolds and I’m super excited.

LemonTT · 19/07/2020 09:45

Visited a seaside village yesterday and a beach the day before. Lovely to see people out and being happy. There was nothing dangerous. As many people as you would expect in the area in July. That’s not crowds of people but enough not to be able to find parking at the beach. The beaches are spacious and these are not over developed areas.

I didn’t enjoy being on a plane. Although the airports were fine. Very eerie to see Gatwick runways so devoid of traffic.

Those raves are nothing to do with holidays and everything to do with drug dealers exploiting the irresponsible young who want to party.
Cornishandnotaprick · 19/07/2020 09:49

yes we’re having lots of visitors but those visitors are being sensible.

And it’s brilliant.

Literally never seen so many smiley and lovely people! Smile

ScrapThatThen · 19/07/2020 10:19

@Cornishandnotaprick and @LemonTT the happy people enjoying the countryside, I'm glad that's your experience, that's exactly what we intend to do. Thanks excited now.

Just got back from self catering in the Yorkshire dales. Visited Middleham, leyburn and Bedale.

All fine, not too busy but not weirdly quiet either. Social distancing happening - queued for butchers (1 in, 1 out) all fine.

Quite a few pubs and restaurants still on takeaway or outside area only, but still plenty of choice.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 19/07/2020 10:40

crosser62
We’ve had the same with the hand sanitizer in my local Asda. 2 ladies decided to stand for a few minutes and have a natter at the hand sanitizer station at the entrance completely oblivious to the long line of people waiting behind them.
Think this will end up being a problem in many places.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 19/07/2020 10:43

Holiday wise, nearest tourist city had a weird vibe that made me feel really depressed and couldn’t wait to leave.
Smaller local city a lot better, people seemed a lot happier.

Most tourist attractions are either closed or have Un needed one way systems which just make the visit quite stressful and un enjoyable.

LatinforTelly · 19/07/2020 10:47

Sorry this is slightly off topic (but related), have the English schools mostly broken up now or do some break up at the end of this week? Trying to gauge what the traffic may be like next weekend. We are travelling away from a tourist area to the city to see family. HmmGrin

CountessFrog · 19/07/2020 12:14

Most have broken up. Ours finishes midweek

LatinforTelly · 19/07/2020 13:46

Thanks, Countess! Flowers

There have been no known cases of Covid in our seaside town in over a week and that is all about to change which may well be where the 'them and us' feeling comes from. We will get lots of people from cities visiting potentially bringing it with them.

But largely the everyday problems of living in a tourist hot spot is down to the infrastructure, the roads get blocked and what is normally a 10 minute nip to the main post office to pick up a parcel can easily turn in to an hour plus stuck in traffic. But its been a tourist destination for over 100 years, you'd think they would sort the roads out, but no roadworks etc are often planned during the worst times too further limiting access.

As for bins, I don't understand why people don't take their own bin bag with them, fill it up after your picnic and take everything back with them. If the bin is full you don't just place your stuff next to it as the seagulls will just tear into it.

My0My · 19/07/2020 15:19

There is now clear evidence (as reported in the Sunday Times today) that it’s a huge over simplification about cities having Covid in all areas. They don’t. It’s largely in certain neighbourhoods. It’s as a result of death rates within various minorities that this has been investigated. Why this has happened is worth a read. It’s absolutely ridiculous to think that the average middle class person holidaying in a cottage or a nice hotel is bringing Covid from a city with them.
