Tongue soreness

Has anyone else had a sore tongue/ mouth and ulcers as a symptom of coronavirus? My mum and I had it for months and not entirely sure whether it’s part of Covid or separate....

OP posts:

Have you been tested?

Haffiana · 06/07/2020 21:25

To add - yes, I have had this for months as well and it has puzzled me, but I have no reason to believe I have Covid.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 06/07/2020 22:19

I had a really sore painful tongue, and had a weird taste in my mouth for about a week way back in February, as well as sore itchy eyes.

At the same time, DH had a "virus" which he thinks may have been covid. He saw the practice nurse because he wasn't getting any better (he has asthma) and she told him loads of people were reporting having a virus with similar symptoms. But no-one ever mentioned Covid at all. So we don't know for certain, can only guess it might have been.

quiteathome · 06/07/2020 22:36

I had what I thought was Corona virus just before Lockdown. It went away and came back. I have been well since. However over the past couple of weeks my tongue has been burning. I thought I had lost ability to eat spicy food.

noraclavicle · 06/07/2020 23:11

I have had this a few times, OP, well before Covid-19 came along. Really painful tongue! Have never quite got to the bottom of why it happens however - one possibility is vitamin deficiency and yes, it apparently can be a viral symptom.

MrsTweedy73 · 06/07/2020 23:13

Have your B12 levels been checked recently?

Menora · 06/07/2020 23:34

Really strange I have this too. I phoned my GP about something else and mentioned it they said treat for thrush. It’s still sore

StrangeAddiction · 07/07/2020 00:39

Yes, I've had a sore tongue this past week.

Maybe I'll take up the volunteer test I've been offered from the Zoe app.

stealthbanana · 07/07/2020 00:44

I had this last week! Incredibly painful. No other symptoms. At first I thought I’d burned my tongue without noticing somehow(!) and then I assumed it was oral thrush and was in the process of making a gp appointment when it went away.

StrangeAddiction · 07/07/2020 00:45

Actually, scrap that. Reading through other replies it could be anemia causing it as I've had other symptoms and I've been anemic lots of times before so really I should have put two and two together Hmm

PiggyPlumPie · 07/07/2020 09:08

I've had this since before Christmas! Treated as oral thrush - bit helped.

Bloods showed low iron but GP wants me on it for at least six months. Can also be low levels of B12 or zinc.

I'm pretty used to it now, feels like I've drank a too hot cup of tea.

PiggyPlumPie · 07/07/2020 09:08

Not helped even!

Menora · 07/07/2020 09:34

I think mine is B12 to be honest

GrizzlebumsMum · 07/07/2020 10:01

I’ve had a recurring ulcer on the side of my tongue for a few months now. And a load of them on my gums. It’s unusual for me to get them these days but as a teenager I had painful ulcers all the time. I just assumed I’m run down (which I definitely am with a non-sleeping toddler and working from home plus childcare) but the iron and vitamin deficiencies sound like very likely causes for me too.

fadingfast · 07/07/2020 17:48

Yes I've had this on and off a few times since April. It's inside my mouth, mainly inside my lower lip but also under tongue. It's not mouth ulcers (I've previously had these), but feels similar. I've had periodic taste disturbances too. I've contacted my GP to ask about it, but had no response yet. I read on the Zoe app page that it can be associated with Covid (see the end of this article: covid.joinzoe.com/post/covid-skinrash)
I've had very mild but noticeable breathing issues since the end of March but no coughing or temperature. I did wonder if it could be iron deficiency but I'd also like an antibody test for Covid (not sure if the GP can request this?).

Itsgottobethisone · 07/07/2020 17:50

I’ve had this for the past 3 weeks. Definitely not covid as I tested for it last week before my c section and it came back negative.

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 07/07/2020 18:50

My little one has had recurring ulcers in her mouth since March (when I strongly suspect we had covid although no testing) Gp however says it's very likely from our symptoms we did and the ulcers are one of those post-viral type things

FedUpofLockdown123 · 07/07/2020 20:26

I had a really sore tongue about 3 weeks ago! I instantly worried it was covid (as I do every single time my body does something differentlyHmm) so was googling like mad but nothing came up. I put it down to hayfever as I was suffering quite bad with that at the time a constant itchy throat and a dry mouth so I'm assuming that's what caused the burning sensation on my tongue.

FarTooSkinny · 08/07/2020 01:01

I strained my tongue given oral pleasure last week. Does that count?

itscomplicatedlife · 31/08/2021 15:14

I've been getting constant red sores for 5 wks now, waiting for blood results but this is unbelievable as I've never ever suffered wirh a thing like this befor in my life! Not tested positive for Covid. Constant dark red sores mostly on one side, started with loads of red dots roof of mouth which came back today, sore red throat over 5 wks, began with loads of ulcers which are fewer but mostly these big red sores that sometimes have blood blisters! Just wish the dr could fig out what it is! Got another appt in over 2 wks as I can't get in any sooner 😞
