That seems very alarming and confusing it can't really be categorised as 'relapse' if the episodes are that far apart can it 😳

Discobar · 05/07/2020 00:05

Yeah, shows that whilst antibody tests will tell us if we've had it, its possible to catch again

there was a couple of cases in China where people were testing positive for months after they had it even though they were non - systematic
there are a lot of things about this that they still don't know or understand

You can get chicken pox more than once but it's fairly rare.

I suspect it'll be the same with covid

Langsdestiny · 05/07/2020 08:18

The treatment of wrestlers by WWE during the pandemic has been deeply unpleasant.

crosseyedMary · 05/07/2020 11:24

With chickenpox as far as I know it's not a case of catching it twice rather the virus 'hides' in a dormant state in the nerve tissue and then can re-emerge under certain conditions

Maybe that's what happens with covid-19.... it stays in the body?

Keepdistance · 05/07/2020 12:04

Hopefully not.
But may be a bit ironic all the young healthy (smug) people not worried but them we all get it then no vax works (not sure it would stop it reactivating anyway?) so they all have to worry about it as they get older.
Cp reactivates as shingles not cp.

I seem to remember seeing that other cold viruses do reactiate.

There have been people on mn who have tested positive twice.

S korea did say it wasnt this though it was in their cases dead virus being shed

mrsbyers · 05/07/2020 13:39

I had two bouts about a month apart neither confirmed by testing as right at the start of it all but docs have said they’re pretty certain it was - doc explained it as viral load increasing and reigniting the remaining COVID in system , the second time around my husband had suspected Covid and while not as bad as the first still had the same symptoms

I don't think it's alarming. No test is 100% accurate so it's possible that one of the tests may have returned a false positive. There were a number of cases of people 'getting Covid twice' in SK a while ago, but the authorities said that most of them could be attributed to testing errors.

Besides, you'll always have exceptions to the rules. Even if very occassionally people do catch the virus again in quick succession, that doesn't mean it's the norm.

NothingIsWrong · 05/07/2020 14:43

I had chickenpox twice, once as a 2yo and once at 19. Seems a long time to be hiding, so I would think it was two separate infections.

As with everything else, there will always be outliers - a very small minority may well be able to get corona twice, but it the vast majority cannot it wouldn't seem to be too much of a concern.

No vaccine works for everyone, antibodies wear off etc.

notevenat20 · 05/07/2020 15:03

I think these cases are so rare that almost certainly either the person is immunosuppressed or they didn't really have it the first time and the test gave a false reading.

tobee · 05/07/2020 22:31

When it was talked about previously people (in China) were still testing positive weeks later because the virus was still in their systems even though they were well and not (believed to be) contagious anymore

sweetheartyparty · 05/07/2020 22:58

I heard a doctor say on a programme that the virus sheds itself long after the symptoms are gone. A second positive test could be this shedding from the lungs

This is what I heard but misremembered the key word "shed"
