2nd wave prepping

drinkingwineoutofamug · 03/07/2020 12:16

Not saying there will be a 2nd wave
But lessons learnt, the shops only ran out of certain goods due to panic buying. There was food in the shops, we had utilities etc.
But will people go daft again as warned that autumn may lead to a 2nd wave then only a theory .
So question, will people start stockpiles again?
I get that the media had a lot to do with it scaremongering.

more people jetting off to Spain rather then being bothered about toilet paper. So no

CrunchyCarrot · 03/07/2020 12:26

I always have a stockpile, there can be many reasons for shortages, not just Coronavirus. I prep for bad weather and Brexit, in case anyone's forgotten that!

FrugiFan · 03/07/2020 12:27

I have started replenishing my stockpile, which never was and still is not panic buying (I didnt go to the shops at all during panic buying season).

I like to have 2 of everything e.g. peanut butter. One open jar on the go and one sealed in the cupboard. When the open one runs out, I open the new jar and buy a replacement. This worked great over lockdown when it was harder to get hold of stuff as we never ran out, but I found it hard to buy replacements so now I'm restocking.

Peridot1 · 03/07/2020 12:28

It’s already happening in Australia. Melbourne is back on lockdown and there was a run on toilet roll again. Made the news and same happened in Sydney. Which isn’t locked down! Madness.

Bol87 · 03/07/2020 14:55

Stockpiling boils my blood. It’s just so frigging selfish. The first month of my daughters life, I struggled to get formula for her. Back in March, a lady in her 50’s or do next to me picked up the last tin in Sainsburys. I thought nothing of it other than frustration there was yet again none left. Then she turned to me & my newborn & said ‘I’ve been buying a few of these in case milk runs. I couldn’t be doing without it in my cuppa’ 🤬🤬 Fantastic. You just have a cupboard full of frigging baby formula while those of us with babies can’t find any to feed our actual babies. I was fuming. Thankfully a local shop invited those with babies to pop their names on a list & when they got stock, text us so we could go buy it before it got put on the shelves later that day.

Please don’t stockpile. Just buy what you need sensibly! So we can all continue to blooming eat & wipe our bums!

SunbathingDragon · 03/07/2020 15:00

My only preparation for a second wave is to make sure the children’s Christmas stocking presents are bought well in advance.

NannyR · 03/07/2020 15:08

Stockpiling and panic buying are two different things in my opinion. It's sensible for lots of reasons to have a good stock of food and other household items at home, things that you will definitely use, that you've bought gradually over time without affecting what's on the shelf for other customers. Panic buying is the sort of hysteria we saw a few weeks ago where people cleared out shelves buying as much as they possibly could in a very short space of time - more than they needed, and things they might not actually use.
I have a couple of weeks worth of food and stuff like loo rolls at home all the time - I live alone so if I had to self isolate for two weeks I wouldn't have to rely on other people to do shopping for me.

youhave4substitutes · 03/07/2020 15:11

"Stockpiling boils my blood. It’s just so frigging selfish."

There's nothing selfish about prepping. It's sensible. Panic buying is an entirely different thing.

TheMammothHunters · 03/07/2020 15:14

I prepped for Brexit so had a stash of various things anyway.
Not so worried about a second wave as about no deal which is coming our way.
I add a few things every week- tins, pasta, oil, jars, cleaning products, toiletries, loo roll, flour. Just about £5 per week worth. We can do this at the moment and it soon builds up.
Also keeping an eye out for Christmas presents.

IcedBlueNails · 03/07/2020 15:22

People jetting off to Spain would be one of the reasons we need to! Not being able to get food in local stores and bot being able to get shopping slots, having a few bits in the cupboard seems sensible.
Wardenmammy · 03/07/2020 15:29

Think I'll be stocking up on nappies, wipes and a couple bottles of calpol as they were a nightmare to get hold off last time

MRex · 03/07/2020 15:31

We always keep a decent supply in, those who can afford to keep extra food and toiletries yet don't are a bit alien to me TBH. I've read many of these threads and still haven't heard a decent reason why someone who can afford it wouldn't want to have spare supplies in case of illness / bad weather / unexpected guests / whatever. Why ever risk getting down to the last loo roll anyway? We'll do regular checks to keep some extra of our favourite things that have longer shelf-life than we usually might, for the little occasional disruptions to specific supply chains, there are several things that became unavailable a few times so we'll get extra of them.

MRex · 03/07/2020 15:33

The best time to stock up is now, then just keep replacing stores. The shops and manufacturers need any extra demand to be spread out as much as possible.

MRex · 03/07/2020 15:34

(Also there are finally offers on again, so it's cheaper.)

Keepdistance · 03/07/2020 15:40

Not as selfish as 'Us for them' who will be looked at as causing the second wave via secondary schools. Why do you think people will need to start prepping.
It is what it is and now we have an idea of the date.

Also all the shopping limits have made it a bit worse as pribably cant even stock up now. I expect tesco still has 80 limit.

MRex · 03/07/2020 15:43

What does "Us for them" mean?

MRex · 03/07/2020 15:44

Couldn't most people shop somewhere other than Tesco if you want to get extra supplies? I know some remote areas have less options, but surely it doesn't affect that many people?

OneKeyAtATime · 03/07/2020 15:45

There was no need to the first time round so nope.

Porcupineinwaiting · 03/07/2020 15:46

I'm replenishing my stockpile/prep store now. We had to live on it for 5 weeks when we came down w COVID one after another and it was an absolute blessing. Asking friends and neighbours to pick you up a few bits is one thing but really hard for them to pick up a weekly shop for 4 people plus another one for their elderly, shielding parents.

Porcupineinwaiting · 03/07/2020 15:47

@OneKeyAtATime so what was your plan for if you got sick? It can take weeks for COVID to burn through a household.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 03/07/2020 15:48

Since the shops have gone more back to normal we’ve been replenishing bit by bit.

Now we’re back to our normal rotation system of one for using, one in stock ready.

So one 12 pack of loo roll open and being used, 1 in the cupboard under the stairs. When the one on the go gets to the end, we’ll add it to the shopping list.

We always buy toiletries on offer so have a stash of shampoo, toothpaste etc in the cupboard in the bathroom.

We buy tons in multipacks so have a 4 pack of tomatoes to use this week for example and 1 in the cupboard as spare.

It means we always have a buffer if we can’t go out shopping for a couple of weeks for any reason and can’t get a delivery.

We could manage about 4 weeks on what’s in the house, although the last week would be dull.

trevthecat · 03/07/2020 15:50

We like others have just been buying a little extra each shop. Dried things mainly with a long shelf life. We reckon right now we could survive for 2 weeks comfortably (2 adults 3kids) with only leaving for bread and milk and maybe wine! After the stockpiling and anger from people last time it makes sense to just be prepared a bit.

ohthegoats · 03/07/2020 15:53

I went to Boots first thing this morning and replenished all my paracetamol/calpol/etc gubbins. I had to go to the pharmacist to do it, because I was buying more than the regulation 2 packets. Just need enough to get through 2 weeks of being quarantined if/when someone gets it.

I also prepped for each Brexit date, but we've eaten a lot of that down now. I'm going to start building that back up slowly. Isn't selfish, is sensible.

BadBear · 03/07/2020 15:54

I swear to God if I have to spend hours looking for toilet paper again because of all the idiots who bought it all, I might start stabbing people... (Obvs while abiding by social distancing guidelines and wearing appropriate PPE)

OneKeyAtATime · 03/07/2020 15:56

@porcupine I d get it delivered. Lots of people helping around one another round here.

When I hear about parents running out of formula, people on restricted diets running out of free from foods, I really wish people wouldn't stockpile...
