Mask exemption?

I have trigeminal neuralgia (a neurological condition which causes attacks of agonising facial pain). I've been in remission for a while but on Tuesday it flared up again, and I'm fairly sure it was because I wore a mask for a short bus journey (the only thing I'd done differently that day). The pain is absolutely debilitating and painkillers don't help.

I'm now worried about wearing a mask in future, but equally worried about a) spreading C19 if I'm asymptomatic and b) getting fined. I've just seen these and considered getting one, but do you think a bus driver/inspector would accept it? I also have other health issues and use a disabled bus pass so that may mean they wouldn't question it so much?

Would wearing a scarf work. It wouldn't be as tight around the chin and ear area?

Fuckinellitsme · 02/07/2020 09:35

@Underhisi I'm not sure it would - even a slight draft or putting on makeup can set it off. One of the worst things about this disease is constantly being on edge, wondering if something will bring on an attack!

Is your gp happy to say you should be exempt from wearing a mask? If so get yourself a lanyard and all is well.

@Purplewithred I haven't spoken to him - is that what you're meant to do? I'll give him a call later.

I've just been in touch with my local bus company and they said that I would be exempt, and have sent me a card to show the driver. I would much rather be able to wear a mask but instead I'll just use the bus as little as possible.

I was wondering about the same thing but for my DD. She to go to hospital yesterday and got challenged by many people (and many angry stares) for not wearing a mask. I kept saying ‘she is not able to tolerate a mask’ but I was really uncomfortable with the situation. Stressful!
Thanks for the link above OP. I have ordered a lanyard from the link that you gave above. The gov site isn’t clear about if you need official justification but I’m sure that Drs will not want to be writing letters etc. I’ll go for using the lanyard and carrying copy of DLA letter to ‘prove disability’ (sigh) if challenged.
I hope that your trigeminal neuralgia settles down OP and I’m glad your bus company is sending you a card.
