I have just heard somebody saying that masks stop you spreading the virus not actually getting it. Is this correct ?

Unless you have a medical grade mask. But if everyone wears one, the risk of transmission drops by about 90%.

Pretty much, but they actually only do that for a few minutes anyway.

we all sometimes spit when we talk, cough, sneeze. A mask reduces the risk of transmitting covid-19 which is asymptomatic but still infectious.

wear a mask indoors if you possibly can. And continue to stay 2 metres away from others if at all possible - the science and the definition of cubic volume hasn't changed just because we need to get people back in work.

sewing your own washable mask isn't difficult, just straight lines, or there are plenty available to buy now, disposable or washable.

Yes, essentially that's correct.

It doesn't stop the wearer from spreading it but it greatly reduces the spread.

Yes, how have you only just heard that? I wish people were more aware of this. It might stop the anti mask brigade spouting how they laugh at mask wearers in their non medical grade masks fiddling with it..
It reduces a percentage of particles and by doing so evidence is started to suggest that this impacts on transmission rates.

I hadn’t given it much thought to be honest but yes it makes sense now it’s been explained.
