It seems from August employers will have to pay pension and national insurance contributions so firms are increasing in the number of redundancies.

Of the 9m furloughed how many do you think will lose their jobs before 2021? More than half at least?

Anyone get redundant/at risk of losing their jobs how are you preparing for it?

Beatrixpotterspencil · 01/07/2020 16:39

I’m self employed but at least 4 in my social circle are expecting redundancy ☹️

chancechancechance · 01/07/2020 16:54

It is going to be a terrible summer Sad
I know a few expecting it but none confirmed yet.

HappyDinosaur · 01/07/2020 16:55

I have one friend who is a bit nervous about her job, but it could be fine. I'm in training at the moment, just hoping there will be a job at the end of it. Suprisingly, two friends have said their firms are hiring at the moment so there is some hope out there.

dementedma · 01/07/2020 16:57

Friend messaged me today thats he's being made redundant. Several staff at dd2s work already been laid off

billysboy · 01/07/2020 16:59

I cant see how this cannot end up being anything but a shit show despite promises from government about help

Its all about confidence with job security , a lot of firms have discovererd that they can work from home etc and dont need as many staff or as big an office in town for eg which equals less journeys on the train and not picking a coffee and lunch up on way in so there are some examples of the consequences of a changing culture that will result in more job losses

MyOwnSummer · 01/07/2020 17:03

My previously 100% safe job is now having a "consultation" with up to 50% of our department to go. Feeling fucking awful TBH, but what can you do? Shit happens, 50% chance of staying is still better than nothing.

poupeediop · 01/07/2020 17:08

I think this change in culture will have a big impact because it's happened so fast. There is a huge economy that revolves around commuting & office working. Think of the impact on fares, security, cleaning, eateries, bars, by less people commuting & working in the city.

BunsyGirl · 01/07/2020 17:09

Many employers are using the furlough scheme to cover their redundancy notice payments so are starting the redundancy process now. It’s a cheap way of getting rid of staff, particularly those who are entitled to 12 weeks notice.

lljkk · 01/07/2020 17:09

This is what people wanted... ok, they didn't want a pandemic, but they wanted to pay any price to dramatically reduce deaths from covid. At least we're not Brazil or even Mississippi.

PickAChew · 01/07/2020 17:10

Definitely more to come. Pret are renegotiating rents and have already announced that 2 of their 3 tyneside stores are opening. Gregg's still have a lot of closed stores, so I bet they have to do the same. I have no idea how boots will keep all its stores open as they're still grilling people about what they want to go in for. I've taken my custom to superdrug, though a lot of their stores have been closed through lockdown.

PickAChew · 01/07/2020 17:11

2 out of the 3 stores NOT opening.

OfUselessBooks · 01/07/2020 17:22

I've been made redundant, only one of two or three at our workplace though. @DreamChaser23 we worked out how much redundancy I would get, which was a big help. We reduced our outgoings as much as possible early on so we could save as much as possible. And I've done a budget for the next 3 months, taking into account my redundancy payment. I've claimed on my insurance (I've felt insecure in my job for a while so we put it in place). Oh and join a union - I've had so much free legal advice, it was a real help! If you wait until you're at risk though, you don't get as much help.

We are selling up and moving as we cant afford to stay in our house long term, but at least now it's happened, we can plan.

Alex50 · 01/07/2020 17:23

I start back to work this Friday one day a week and then 2 days a week for the rest of July, hopefully back full time in August but I don’t think any job is safe, anyone could be made redundant at any time.

tigerbear · 01/07/2020 22:13

Two of my friends made redundant yesterday, one who’s an accountant, the other in marketing.
I work as a headhunter, and loads of my candidates being made redundant. My own job (self employed) obviously not looking very stable either!

LaurieFairyCake · 01/07/2020 22:15

Over 5 million will lose their jobs apparently. It's going to be the worst since the 1930's

Bol87 · 01/07/2020 22:16

Two friends have been made redundant today Sad Both Arcadia group.. I’m genuinely gutted for them. One is on maternity leave & one is the sole earner ..

jackdaw141 · 01/07/2020 22:16

At that rate OP by about mid 2025 the entire UK workforce will be out of work. We will all have to start with a new form of society. It is all uncharted territory and very, very unusual, mostly because we will never know if it happens or not because there will not be anybody to read the news.

Nanalisa60 · 01/07/2020 22:37

This is going to make the 2008 recession look like a walk in the park, I’m so worried, I can see 6 million unemployed by early next year.

Whoknowswhocares · 01/07/2020 22:41

Yet a great many of those saying how terrible the job losses and the economic damage is will be the same people who want us to all stay at home and ‘Keep safe’
People don’t seem to understand one problem is the direct result of their solution to the other

Redolent · 01/07/2020 22:53

Close the borders and implement right restrictions. Eliminate the virus in the UK. Sacrifice the travel industry in order for economic life here to return to normal in all other sectors.

MaxNormal · 01/07/2020 22:59

Close the borders lol and take out what remains of the economy.

Redolent · 01/07/2020 23:03

@MaxNormal

Close the borders lol and take out what remains of the economy.
Culture and arts, theatres. Restaurants, hospitality, pubs. Universities. Sport. Venues and suppliers that rely on large indoor events. The high street.

All would resume at 100% capacity in a covid-free Britain.

Well aside from the fact that several of those you’ve listed are frequented and filled to capacity by foreign tourists Confused

HeIenaDove · 01/07/2020 23:09

@PickAChew Both Boots and Superdrug have been open throughout lockdown here and they have both been great.
