11,000 jobs gone in two days more to come?

It seems from August employers will have to pay pension and national insurance contributions so firms are increasing in the number of redundancies.

Of the 9m furloughed how many do you think will lose their jobs before 2021? More than half at least?

@TazSyd

Thinking of trying for supermarkets just keep some money coming in

They’re inundated with applicants, as everyone thinks this is the solution. Another friend has been made redundant (travel sector) and he has been rejected by the supermarket roles he has applied for.

So if redundancy hits its benefits then. Thanks Boris and Chris

So many more job losses to come. Going to be pretty grim a year from now. Lots of opportunities for those with capital to buy up the repossessions.

TazSyd · 04/07/2020 11:45

@EnlightenedOwl

It’s shit all round and I can’t help but think that it has all been a handy excuse for a global recession that was coming anyway (readjusts tin foil hat).

DP worked in compliance and regulation in the hospitality industry and will be redundant shortly. There is absolutely nothing going in hospitality at the moment. He has had a sniff of a job in another sector this morning though, via a friend. It’s in a different sector but he has transferable skills. I think the key will be the intro from a friend. Can you contact all of your network and see if anyone knows of any available opportunities that they could maybe intro you to?

Oddly enough been on LinkedIn and had a couple of approaches from recruiters about couple interesting options. I will wait though as if give notice will lose a redundancy payment. I may escape it yet I just feel it's coming

Haplap · 04/07/2020 12:23

Yep, will be about networking. Social mobility aspirations are gone.

Potplant · 04/07/2020 12:33

And me as of Friday.

They are using furlough to pay my redundancy notice for the next 3 months so not officially unemployed till September. Currently looking at jobs, and hoping a potential employer won’t be put off that I’m not available straight away.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 04/07/2020 12:37

@Hearwego

It’s fucking crap isn’t? Millions of people will be looking for jobs . If a company gets rid of 100s of staff, presumably lots of them will be applying for similar jobs? A friend of mine applied for a job recently and 1500 other people applied! This is in Central London. Is this pain really worth it? Surely protecting care home and vulnerable people is the better way of doing things. For Christ sake, what chance do our children have?
it is absolutely tragic and heartbreaking and a large part of it was so unnecessary. I can't believe it is beyond the wit of the great and good of this country to protect the very vulnerable and release the majority so that society and the economy can try to be rebuilt before it completely collapses.

There’s nothing to lose by speaking to recruiters and even doing some first interviews. As you say, you just need to manage the timescales. I hope you do escape it though.

I got my job via the husband of a former colleague. I had been chatting to the former colleague on messenger one night and her husband played golf with the hiring manager of my current role the next day. They put us in touch.

I agree. I’ve said it on other threads. If you are under 45 and have no underlying health conditions then there is very little risk to you. So why throw children and young people under the bus? A lot of the people who are at risk - the elderly - are living either in mortgage free homes or care homes, usually on a better funded pension than I can hope for. Why couldn’t we come up with something that protected them but let us continue working?

EnlightenedOwl · 04/07/2020 15:46

I totally agree its devastating what this government has done

feetfreckles · 04/07/2020 15:52

And those between elderly and over 45? WhT happens to them? The carers for many of the elderly, the childminders for many of the young ? The ones without the wonderful pensions. The ones still working as their pensions were shafted?

It's very hard to allow the young to roam free and protect those who need to be protected without effectively putting those people into isolation for a few years, locked up because of their age. If you found a few months hard, why would you accept them being locked up for years?

DianaT1969 · 04/07/2020 17:08

I wish the government would do something radical to free up jobs for young people. There just won't be as many jobs to fill due to so many sectors being killed-off. At least for a couple of years.
The UK also has to become inventive and create more products/services.
It's impossible, and they won't, but if they offered early state pension to the over 50 who volunteered to vacate a job and not work a PAYE role again, some might take it up if they've paid off their mortgage, or suffer anxiety/ill-health.

tbh - 'locking' up the over 60s would probably suffice

SpnBaby1967 · 04/07/2020 21:02

Thankfully DH & I are both in secure jobs, but my best mate works in a role heavily impacted by covid and worries if her job is safe.

Shutting down the country for the length of time they have was a bad idea and our children will pay the price in the long run.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/07/2020 21:35

Well I've just been informed that business is really picking up and I'm needed back at work next month after 19 weeks on furlough. Massive relief.

Redcrayons · 04/07/2020 21:56

@Waxonwaxoff0 that’s great news. Long may it continue.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/07/2020 22:41

Thanks @Redcrayons it's been a scary time as I bought my first house in January and I'm a single parent so if I lost my job then I would have had to sell the house and go back to renting.

I know not everyone will be as lucky. I really feel for those losing their jobs. It's a horrible, scary time.

Bellag79 · 04/07/2020 22:43

I have just been made redundant and I am so worried as we need both incomes.

WildfirePonie · 05/07/2020 11:55

I'm worried about the 3 million hong kong citizens coming to UK... and there being no jobs left!

TazSyd · 05/07/2020 12:08

@WildfirePonie

I don’t think we’ll get 3 million. That’s how many are eligible for a BNO passport. A lot will go to neighbouring countries (Taiwan and South Korea have offered a fast track visa scheme). Australia has offered something similar to us.

Hong Kongers are mostly well educated so a lot will qualify for standard visa sponsorship to other countries such as Canada.

Plus China won’t let 3 million leave at once. There’s nothing we can do to force China to let them leave.

WildfirePonie · 05/07/2020 12:56

Thanks @TazSyd
I didn't know the full story but I can relax a bit now!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/07/2020 10:41

Pret closing 39 stores and lots of job losses

Over the weekend I heard of a local restaurant, pub and independent shop that are not reopening - probably 30 or so jobs between them. Bad news after bad news...

TazSyd · 06/07/2020 10:43

@AlecTrevelyan006

Yes, it’s going to hit sandwich, coffee shops hard. Along with anyone else servicing the commuter economy. They’ll have had hardly any business from the end of March and much reduced business for the rest of the year.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 06/07/2020 12:15

Unemployment is going to hit 15% easily.

ShootsFruitsAndLeaves · 06/07/2020 12:22

This is what people wanted... ok, they didn't want a pandemic, but they wanted to pay any price to dramatically reduce deaths from covid. At least we're not Brazil or even Mississippi.

? Mississippi has around 10 daily covid-19 deaths, which is similar to the UK, per capita.
